Vanguard class Fast Attack Craft
The smallest warships currently in service with the Terran Fleet the Vanguard class are pure attack vessels. Initially deployed around Earth to bolster defences after the loss of 2 science vessels in the adjoining Alpha Centauri system FAC's have been deployed on several occasions outside of Sol to attack targets of opportunity or provide support to main fleet elements, notably in destroying 3 Commonwealth survey vessels in Barnard's Star.
   The Vanguard class is subdivided into 3 seperate models designed for combat, sensor arrays (S) and jump engines (J). Currently no Vanguard J units are in service after the loss of 3 units probing the jump point into Gliese-109 ahead of the assault fleet.
Given the recent advances in fleet capabilities and the advent of the space fighter the role of the FAC is now shifting away from patrol and fleet support towards colonial defence. Current plans are for squadrons of Vanguard FAC's to be installed at each Terran colony until PDC's can be constructed, with Beta Squadron covering Sol and Gamma Squadron covering Alpha Centauri. Once Alpha Squadron returns from Dishian they will be deployed to Newport to protect the naval base currently being constructed there.

Resolve and Resolution class Frigates
Originally commissioned as Destroyer class vessels in 2025 the Resolve class Frigate Leader and Resolution class Frigate were humanities first armed warships. Initially designed to patrol the Sol system and provide search and rescue assistance the dawning of the interstellar age has seen these vessels venture far away from Earth. Deployed both during the ill-fated First Alpha Centauri Campaign and the later Ross-154 Campaign both classes have proven themselves to be highly reliable vessels. Detractors of the vessel however point out that their compromise of both offensive and defensive weapons systems limited their overall effectiveness. Indeed in recent years the role of both classes has been largely overtaken by the dedicated Nelson and Tribal class Cruisers in their offensive and defensive roles respectively. These factors in addition to the gradual increase in naval tonnage since both classes were laid down has led to their eventual reclassification as Frigates in 2041 and their removal from main fleet operations (the Destroyer classification was to be passed on to the Warrior class Guided Missile Destroyer).
In recent years the two Frigate squadrons have been used as escorts for science vessels on survey missions but they lack the range and endurance for true long range operations. Currently multiple options for the frigates are being explored with the possibility of their being refit for extended operations with the Survey Groups or forming a Rapid Reaction Unit along with the remaining Hood class Light Cruiser. As the longest serving units of the Navy there is a strong and vocal bloc arguing for their continuing service. Currently 2 Resolve class Frigate Leaders and 4 Resolution class Frigates are in service.

Tribal class Area Defence Cruisers
The Tribal class provides the shield of current fleet deployments, defending any and all vessels from hostile missile attack within a range of 3mkm. 4 members of this class have been built with 2 currently in service. Tragically 2 Tribal class vessels were lost in the opening moments of the Gliese-109 Campaign during the fleets jump point transit, destroyed at close range before they were able to return fire. Thus far the true capabilities of the Tribal class have yet to be demonstrated but confidence within the navy remains high that this design will prove itself an effective platform.

Nelson class Guided Missile Cruisers
The core of any task group the Nelson class was humanities first purely offensive warship design. The first members of this class were laid down in 2028 and currently 6 units are in operation spread across the 2nd and 3rd Fleets. A further 2 units are planned for the nascent 1st Fleet based in Sol. This warship design has proven itself in both the Second Alpha Centauri Campaign of 2038 and throughout ISW1, with four vessels serving with distinction in the pivotal Gliese-109 Campaign. The mixture of short and medium ranged weaponry was initially criticized but during the Gliese-109 Campaign the design was born out by events when Nelson class Cruisers were responsible for the destruction of several enemy vessels with their energy weapons. Proponents of this mixed armament point out that even when the fleet in Gliese-109 began to run low on missiles the Nelson’s remained a viable force.

Hood class Light Cruiser
The last of the 'triad' of Cruiser designs laid down following the debacle of the First Alpha Centauri Campaign the Hood class Light Cruiser is currently unique in the Terran Federation in mounting no missile launchers. Instead the Hood class utilises turreted lasers for both offensive and defensive fire. The design for the Hood was driven by 2 main considerations, firstly for a fast warship capable of pursuing and engaging a fleeing enemy and secondly to provide a short ranged anti-missile defence for the fleet. 2 units of this class were laid down during ISW1 and both were deployed to Gliese-109 where they met their first trail by fire. Unfortunately the extremely close engagement range at the jump point in Gliese-109 hampered their effectiveness and later engagements were fought at missile ranges. 1 Hood class was lost in Gliese-109 when attempting to engage a swarm of over 100 Commonwealth FAC's, though this sacrifice did save the rest of the fleet from the hammerblow which befell Hood. Fleet Analysts are generally underwhelmed by the performance of the Hood class and are currently are viewing options to improve its performance. The 1 remaining vessel of this class, Bismarck, was badly damaged by the FAC attack and is currently in orbit of the Bigdish homeworld awaiting repair.

Churchill class Jump Cruiser
With the expansion of the fleet in 2028 work began on designing an updated Jump Leader capable of transporting the 10,000 and 12,500 ton Nelson, Tribal and Hood class Cruisers through jump points. The J12600 jump drive carried was capable carrying with it up to 4 additional vessels, a research effort which took several years to achieve. In addition the Churchill class was equipped with the MR509-R150 search sensor, previously equipped on the ground-based Castle class Planetary Defence Centers. 2 units of this class were built prior to the Gliese-109 Campaign during ISW1 and both accompanied the assault fleet into the Commonwealths home system, despite the fact that the fleets jump was made using the recently completed Jump Gate. Unfortunately both Churchill class vessels were lost in the aftermath of the jump to the defending warships, stranding the fleet in Gliese-109 and directly leading to the controversial events which followed.

King class Heavy Cruiser
Designed as a direct response to the Commonwealth of Bigdish's 12,900 ton Sentinel class Cruisers (it would only be after ISW1 and the Gliese-109 campaign that it would be realised that the Sentinel class were armed solely with AMM launchers akin to the Tribal class) the King class were first laid down in 2041 after the Second Alpha Centauri Campaign. Essentially a 15,000 ton Nelson the King class benefited from recent improvements in technology and with the Flight II release in 2046 became the first Federation warships to mount defensive shields. The Heavy Cruisers serve as the core of current naval battlegroups and have proven themselves to be adept at short-to-mid range engagements during the Gliese-109 Campaign. Currently 4 King class Heavy Cruisers are in service with the 2nd and 3rd Fleets and 2 more are being laid down for the 1st Fleet.

Warrior class Guided Missile Destroyer
With the withdrawal of the Resolve and Resolution class Frigates in 2041 it was decided a new heavy hitting escort should accompany any future battlegroups. The development of box launchers allowed the Warrior class to pack 60 size-5 single-use missile launchers onto a 5,000 ton hull while retaining both the passive defences and speed of the Resolution class. Unfortunately budget constraints during the financial crisis preceding the Gliese-109 Campaign meant that no members of this class were laid down and currently there are no plans to do so. The designs for the Warrior class have however formed the basis of the General Combat Cruiser concept, a proposed update to the current Nelson class Guided Missile Cruisers incorporating both box launchers and AMM capability, as well as the new America class Strike Cruiser. Despite never being constructed as of 2050 the origional design from 2041 has also been updated to include recent advancements in technology.

Audacity class Escort Carrier
The first space going Carrier the Audacity was designed to provide additional mobility for squadrons of Vanguard class Fast Attack Craft. While equipped with only passive defences the Audacious class has proven capable of delivering FAC's to distant battlefields and their success there has led to the development of a new generation of even smaller, faster attack craft - the space fighter. Orgionally intended to be the same size as the Nelson class Cruiser the design was updated prior to construction to match that capable of being transported by the Churchill class Jump Cruiser. Development is currently underway of an even larger Fleet Carrier. 2 Escort Carriers are currently in service.

Future Fleet Developments - 2050 onwards
Midway class Fleet Carrier
Almost 6,000 tons larger than the preceding Audacity class the new Fleet Carrier is designed to deliver a strike force of 36 dozen Viper class Fighter-Bombers to a hostile system, where they can then engage the enemy at a range of almost 1 billion mkm, far exceeding conventional missile engagements, before returning for refuelling and rearmament. However even without carrying any armour the Midway can only carry enough munitions to reload her fighter complment 1 and a half times. Although space fighters are a new and untested development the successes of the FAC program have highlighted the capabilities of these small vessels. Currently 1 vessel of this class is in production.

The Vipers will be accompanied by Raptors which carry active search sensors in the place of box launchers, as well as carrying additional reaction mass should it be required.

England class Battleship
A true heavy-weight the new Battleship design is set to be the dream of any aspiring naval captain. Intended to only operate within a battle group of escorting Nelson and King class Cruisers the England class forsakes any compromise over its armament and is a dedicated long-range missile platform. Although currently the Terran Navy has held a range advantage in every missile engagement, even against advanced Centauri vessels, Fleet Command feels that this vessel will ensure that this advantage is as true tomorrow as it was in years past. While no vessels of this class are yet in production 2 are expected to be laid down with the launch of the first Midway class Fleet Carrier.

America class Strike Cruiser
Taking the concept of the Warrior class Guided Missile Destroyer and the Vanguard class FAC's to the extreme the America class carries an overwhelming number of box launchers and is envisioned with 2 distinct purposes. Firstly to deliver an overwhelming alpha-strike against any targets with AM defences (Fleet analysts note that had the Commonwealth fleet been carrying Federation AMM's their preponderance of Escort vessels would have reduced the effectiveness of the King and Nelson classes by almost 90%), and secondly to launch a rapid knock-out punch against multiple enemy warships at close range, such as a jump point blockade. 2 vessels of this class are currently being built in Earth orbit.

Alexander class Command Ship
The Alexander is the proposed successor to the Churchill class Jump Leader capable of transiting up to 4 escorting warships at up to 21,000 tons. The Alexander boasts massively increased defences intended to prevent the loss of jump ships during a hostile transit. The Alexander also boasts a flag bridge for commanding officers and a new large area search sensor with a range of 515mkm. Current plans are for at least 1 Alexander to be attached to each fleet.

General Combat Cruiser (GC2) Concept
The GC2 concept was first proposed in the aftermath of the Gliese-109 campaign as a means of improving the effectiveness of the Nelson class both as detached units and as part of a battle group. During the Gliese-109 Campaign the fleets only AMM defence ships, 2 Tribal class Area Defence Cruisers, were destroyed shortly after transit. For the rest of the Campaign the fleet was without missile defences aside from 2 Hood class Light Cruisers. The GC2 concept argues that had the cruisers with the fleet carried AMM launchers like the Tribal class this would have made the loss of 2 out of 11 warships less of a disaster. In addition it would mean in the future the Nelson class can deploy as discrete units without the need to wait for other support elements to arrive in the event of an emergency. This concept, which its detractors feels dilutes the proven effectiveness of the Nelson class, is still under review at this time and no hulls have been laid down.

Future Fleet Organisation
In the future the current fleet vessels will be divided into 3 administrative fleets as detailed below. 2nd Fleet will be deployed around Dishian while 3rd Fleet will be deployed around Newport. Both these fleets will be responsible for the security of these and the surrounding systems. Meanwhile the 1st Fleet under will be held in Sol system as both a defensive force and a strategic strike force should any new threats emerge. One key point of this deployment is that the Federations largest vessels will be kept safely out of sight at the heart of the Federation - should any hostile force engage the 2nd or 3rd Fleets the arrival of this Strike Force is expected to severely disrupt any enemy plans.
