Question about point defence and beam weapons
« on: May 01, 2020, 03:56:05 AM »
Quick question:

Auto assign FC assigns all my beam weapons to a point defence mode.
Is there any downside to this? Like for example them not being able to fire in normal targetting mode?

If you only have one FC and 10 beam weapons you will be able to shoot only one salvo.

One FC and two beam weapons will allow you to shoot 5 different salvos at the same time.

No... one FC can only fire on one ship target but can fire on unlimited numbers of missile salvos. Steve changed the mechanics for missile salvos during the C# development, it used to be one FC per salvo but that is no longer the case.

To actually answer the question, no there is no harm in it. Unless you expect to shoot enemy ships AND shoot enemy missiles at the same time, in which case you might want to clear the PD setting so that your guns are not recharging when you need them.

Fitting the Title: Does Area Defence actually work? Do I need to set the FC to open fire like with AMMs? Every time I tried it my weapons would not fire

If fire controls don't have a specific target assigned, they'll automatically fire at missiles when they have a point defence mode set.

Of the PD modes, I think the final fire one works best, and I don't think the area defence mode really works. I guess the area defence one needs time for the fire control to get ready to fire, which in practice means it doesn't manage to fire at incoming missiles even once, unless the PD range is very long, or the missiles are very slow, but I've never encountered slow missiles.

I got the area defense to work but it forces the game into 5sec turns which kinda sucks but it's the only way to lets say protect Earth from missile fire without STO's

Related question.

My PD is indeed intercepting missiles, but my AMMs are not firing.

The incoming missiles did 64km/s. Is it possible that my AMMs or FC simply couldn't track them?

What's the range of your FMC? If it is less than 300km then there is a chance that the missiled travelled the tick before the FMC could detect and respond.

Try to set AMM fire control to Open Fire (fire control changes color to orange). My AMMs are working and firing on enemy missiles.

I was going through the C# Aurora Changes List v1.00 thread and found this:
Quote from: Steve Walmsley
In C# Aurora, fire controls set to 'Final Defensive Fire' or 'Final Defensive Fire (Self Only)' will fire on hostile missiles, regardless of whether the fire control is set to 'Open Fire'. Fire controls set to Area Mode or for AMMs will only fire defensively when that fire control is set to 'Open Fire'.

They were on final defensive fire and the enemy missiles ended their turn within my FC range, but only for one 5 sec tick.

You mean that your AMMs were on final defensive? That should not be possible. Final defensive is for beams only.

Did you have an engagement mode (such as "1v1" or "5v1") set?

 - - - -

Final Defensive Fire happens during movement, immediately prior to when the missiles would hit.  Area Defense and missile launch happen during weapons fire.  Everything except CIWS requires someone on your side to have the target on Active Sensors.

Yes.

Yes.  Exactly that.  If you want to shoot the bad guys and not their missiles you'll need to remove them from point defense.
