Engine tech is a bit unique within Aurora techs, in that it has a parallel tech track (reactors) as a prerequisite. What this means is that if you research an engine tech, the next level of engine tech typically won't be available until you've researched the next level of reactor. So if you can't see the next type of engine to research, it probably means that you'll need to research the reactor tech that you can see.
