(Link butchering on this forum is overkill :-P)

Links are munged up for posters with a count of under 10 posts for anti-spam purposes. After 10 posts the restriction is lifted.

I just use the End Task dialog of Yes/No up in the corner on the Aurora.exe process.  Quick click and its gone.  ;D

I get errors when I try this on a work computer.  The admins disabled reg editing (which this tries to do) and it still cannot find the ocxs (or whatever they are called).  I'm assuming the reg editing is needed to change the path vars so aurora looks in it's app path instead of in system32.  Shame Steve can't make aurora do that itself, quite silly how it has to use system32.  Anyone have any ideas for my situation?

Error say what OCX is missing? This file is in the Aurora directory?

I use this nice portable release on two different computers without any problems (Thank you very much for making it).  But on third computer I always get an error: Component SYSINFO. OCX or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.  How can I deal with this error?

OK. Lets try something different.
Open command console (with admin rights). Go to Aurora directory and execute command: regsvr32 SYSINFO.OCX

That might be a problem as my account does not have admin rights and I don't have access to admin account.

Hi, I have been using your portable version and it runs great on my win 7 64 bits, the only bad thing is that the design view brief summary display seems to dissapear after some modules are inserted and this did not happen in standard version but standard version is a mess.  .  )

For example take a look to that screenshot for a more explicit view of what Im talking about :

(http://hxxp: hxxp: img441.  imageshack. us/img441/3342/probaurora.  png)

As you see the whole brief simmary section have been replaced by just geo Pros class Geolocial Survey Vessel

Thre image is not viweable this way : hxxp: img441.  imageshack. us/img441/3342/probaurora.  png

Hi there, sorry to revive an old topic, but I was wondering if there's still support for this? I've tried using it and keep getting the following error:

Error 339
Component 'TABCTL32.OCX' or one of its dependencies is not correctly registered

I've tried registering that file (says it registered succesfully) but nothing's working.
If this is no longer supported, please simply ignore me :) Thanks

Sorry.  I dont have slightest idea why it dont work.

Hi,

I'm using this portable release ( last version) I noticed the problem with the ship designer ( empty summary display).  Can be the problem something  with the feature "Automatic switching of decimal separator.  It will be changed to .  before game start and changed to system default after closing Aurora. "?? I have noticed the summary goes empty when  the tons of the ship gets over 1000, while the tons are below it shows the info of the ship correctly.

I hope it helps you to find the problem and continue with the good work.  Thanks for this portable release ;)

If that would be problem with decimal separator many more things would be crash horrible :-)

I can't find reason why that bug exists in first place. I tested this release on more than 10 computers. And this problem does not occured anywhere.

Hey I solved it!!

1.   - Open the portable release.
2.   - Open the Control Panel.
3.   - Clock, Language, and Region
4.   - Region and Language
5.   - Formats tab
6.   - Additional Settings button
7.   - Find the decimal symbol and change it to ","
8.   - Hit apply
9.   - Profit!

I noticed every time I open AW_Aurora(Administrator mode), the decimal symbol gets back to ".   " and it has to be changed again.

The result is you can see all in the brief summary display again, even you pass 1000 tons ;)

If your decimal separator will be not set to . (dot) you will break many other things in game.

That is reason why wrapper change that in first place.

Oopps! Its true, it is said in the installation manual, sorry :S

I have tried:

decimal separator: . (dot)
thousand separator symbol: I changed it from . (dot) to ,(comma)

It works, does it going to break things too?

Thanks for this utility.  Makes it easy to run this game.  I do have one request, though.  Would it be possible to have some way of setting the thousands separator to our preference?  A parameter to the executable, perhaps.  I much prefer the "," separator over the " " that this launcher uses.

Actually, the only requirement is that the decimal separator be a ". " (and that the thousands separator not be a ". ").  I've found I can go to the regional settings after starting the portable launcher and change the thousands separator back to "," and Aurora will pick this up and start using it.  I mention this in case anyone else would like to see the comma separator.

The portable launcher is missing flags 0211 to 0391.
0211-0389 are in the 5.54 patch.
0390-0391 are in the 2.60 patch.

They are not missing. I removed them deliberately.

I downloaded your utility pack, unzipped it to my desktop, and did nothing else.

This is happening in my new experimental game (it is more than a year since last I played this game, so the learning cliff has come back ;).

When I open the galaxy view in the default game (the one named 'Federation', I get an error in LoadRaceData, error 53:

File not found: 'Flags\flag0385.JPG' (also flag 221, 235 and 254)

But I have other problems as well, so I will try a reinstall.

Title: Re: Portable release - comments
Post by: vonduus on October 27, 2013, 09:43:41 AM
I just downloaded the "official" installer and installed 554, then 621, then 630, and everything works as expected (at least so far). I can open the galaxy view in Steve's default game, as well as in the game I generated myself, without errors.

So whatever has broken the flags, it is not Steve's version of the game. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Title: Re: Portable release - comments
Post by: AcidWeb on October 27, 2013, 09:46:28 AM
There is no "Steve's version of the game" both use this same game files. Only flag, planet and race directories contain other files.
No idea why it is looking for "Flags \" directory as it should be "Flags\".

EDIT:
Anyway. Modified file names so default scenario should not display any errors anymore.

EDIT2:
Found the cause. In new game default flag of the empire is not set. That cause flag error in galactic map.
Title: Re: Portable release - comments
Post by: vonduus on October 27, 2013, 10:08:36 AM
Sorry, this is me not being precise, the game isn't looking for  "Flags \", but, as you say, for "Flags\".

The difference between the two installs is

1) in your version there are two files in the Aurora folder that are not in Steve's install: (1) the AW_Aurora.exe program and (2) a "Logs" folder (empty), plus a series of database backup files (Stevefire.mdb.2 etc).

2) In Steve's install there is a file in the Aurora folder: Stevefire.ldb that is not in yours.

edit: And of course I always start the game as administrator.

Post by: vonduus on October 27, 2013, 10:13:49 AM
Great, thanks a lot. Your utility is much more convenient than having to remember to change the decimal separator every time.
Title: Re: Portable release - comments
Post by: AcidWeb on October 27, 2013, 10:38:05 AM
Version 5 for 6.30 Beta is uploaded.

Number of flags is probably hard-coded (Sigh...) and my pack had fewer of them than the official package. So race generation could try to use non-existent flag number - and that caused the error on galactic map.

First, let me say that I think this is a fantastic idea; a simple way to run Aurora packaged easily. Good stuff.

However, I'm having some issues and hoping someone can help. I unpacked the wrapper per the instructions, I am launching Aurora using the file "AW_Aurora.exe." When I create a game, I get ERROR 3265 was generated by DAO.Fields Item not found in this collection. It seems to only occur when I choose a "Conventional" start. If I acknowledge the error, it continues with game generation but a few days into a game it has massive errors. I appreciate any assistance you can provide. Thanks!

Edit: Issue was caused because for conventional starts one must check the box for "No Missiles Bases for Conventional Start"

Sadly there is no reliable way to force reload them from command line level.

Aren't these values stored in the registry? Read the registry on load, and write back the colors on exit.

No. On Win7/8 you need to reload entire theme file.
And automating that to work for everybody is... problematic.

On Win7 you could just restart DWM service. On Win 8 is not longer possible.

Bug in 6. 41 Launcher.  If Aurora is installed in a directory with a space, the following error occurs when accessing the System Information page (F9).  This happens on Windows 7 64-bit.  Works fine if the space is removed from the directory name.

Code: [Select]

Class not registered.
You need the following file to be installed on your machine. MSSTDFMT.DLL.

Just installed the full download on a PC running Vista Ultimate. Haven't played it yet but it launches OK. I tried the portable version on an older portable v6.30 but that attempt couldn't find MSVCR100.dll. It did say I could attempt re-installation, but I went for the full download which worked.

Great application, I use it between three machines now, one running Vista, another 8.1 and the final one running XP, just transfering the Stevefire database.

Thanks for your hard work

Well portable version don't have all DLLs needed to run... my launcher. But 90% of computers have all required DLLs.
Due to license issues I can't include them to portable version. But they are part of full installer.

I will add separate link to needed libraries.

Avira also reports aurora_wrapper. exe as malware so I submitted and reported the file to them as a false positive.
However, after analysis, they still claim it's malware.

I remember seeing this in one of my games or reading about it in a post.  Vaguely recall it had something to do with one of the setting for asteroid motion.

Now that I think of it, it might have been in a bug report a couple of years ago and Steve fixed the issue.  Not sure - I think it was a couple of years ago.

Are you sure you're installing the current version and not an old one?

Hi! Firstly thank you for making this awesome portable release!.
I am having a problem running the game though.

Upon installing correctly and running using the wrapper, the game interface loads, sadly i get this error followed by a CTD when I click ok:

"Run-time error 339:  Component COMCTL32. OCX or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid"

There are other 339 errors if I click on a different menu, some of them load up fine, others bring up the error (though occasionally it's a different . OCX file).

I tried reinstalling a number of times, running as Admin, even dropping the . OCX files into my System32 folder but still the same error.

I have also installed and updated the normal way previously with the same errors (though I made sure to uninstall it before installing this version).

Can anyone help me out, I have been watching so many tutorials and LP's of this and really want to play it!.

Thank you for your time!.

Sorry it completely slipped my mind! I am on Win7 64 bit.

EDIT: I installed this package on an XP SP3 laptop and it runs perfectly so the problem is my PC, just not sure what exactly is the problem.
If anyone could offer any possible solutions for the problem as i do not want to run it on my work laptop (too many distractions  ;D).

I created a new thread so as to not clutter this one (probably should have done that first, but this seemed the best place for my post).

Hi.  I have been trying to install this game off and on for months.  I keep running into the same issues.  Currently the issue is a bug in which Stevefire. mdb is either opened exclusively by another user (there are no other users) or I require permission to access it, followed by a bunch of variable not set errors (likely because the database isn't being read - those errors shouldn't appear if the process is aborted when the file is not accessed).

I clicked on the database, which is in the aurora folder, and it requests a password to open.  Is the program not giving the database the password when it starts up?

I am on Windows XP, and am the administrator account.  I am using this launcher.  I can't remember if I tried this as well last year with a windows 8 computer or not, but if I did, I eventually gave up due to the various failures to launch.  Thought I 'd try again though, and here I am.  thanks or your help.
Title: Re: Portable release - comments
Post by: TheDeadlyShoe on September 05, 2015, 04:17:30 PM
The program knows the password. I would say this sounds like a Program Files issue except that shouldn't be the case on XP.   Are you running an antivirus? It may be blocking Aurora.

Make sure you are using the wrapper exe and not the aurora exe.

Title: Re: Portable release - comments
Post by: newguy123 on September 06, 2015, 06:59:40 AM
could be an antivirus issue.  I was using the wrapper, and I have it installed in desktop.  I have Comodo and Avira on this computer and am relatively concerned about removing them because this computer was used extensively before it was given me.  It was used by children who hada ndency to acquire viruses like kids do at school.  If I remove either or both antiviruses, the whole thing might teeter over the brink into oblivion.  Or not.  I'll see if I can't figure out how to disable them or allow aurora, but they have been stubborn in the past.

Remove both and use Windows Security Essentials / Windows Defender instead. It's free and just as reliable, if not more. Plus not as intrusive to end user.

I'm also getting

"Run-time error 339:  Component COMCTL32.  OCX or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid"

when trying to access the System Map.

OS is Windows 10 64bit.  If I run without the wrapper it works, if I run without the wrapper as admin - same error.  Unfortunately I can't run the wrapper without admin privileges.

Posting here to suggest transferring from my planet pack to one of MarcAFK's packs (http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php?topic=8078.0) (I suggest using the 3rd one linked as of writing). Assuming, of course, it's still being used in the portable (which, I'll freely admit, I haven't used yet, heh). Haven't exactly tested his pack yet for comparison (still playing an old game), but it's got one great advantage over mine: It's being worked on. Actively.

To be fair the third pack is Tarran's planets, with the nice looking planets from standard Aurora and then a few artistic representations of terraformed planets from the solar system. And then the following gorgeous images.

@Steve Walmsley - http://aurora.iosphe.re/Aurora_latest.exe will always point to newest installer. There are no real instructions as it by design is fully automatic. Install it, and allow wrapper run as admin (which is also enabled by default). It will fix all know issues on newer Windows system not counting some system wide color theme glitches after playing Aurora - not found any workaround (that I can automate) for that.

You should be also aware that this release is just bucket of hacks and I'm sure it will fail to run on some computers - but it will work on most of them.

@Tarran, @MarcAFK - I will add that third pack to next release.

Additionality I thought that latest user-base spike deserve something special so added music support ;D Package contain part of Light Years by Stellardrone (CC BY 3.0 license). Playlist can be modified by editing contents of Music directory.

Hi,

I'm new to this game/forum so apologies if I'm asking about an issue that's already been addressed.

I downloaded the . zip and . exe for the portable launcher today and during install McAfee quarantined the aurora_wrapper. exe because of a file it marked as a trojan.   I suspect this is an error, obviously, and attempted to send the zip to the McAfee customer support in hopes they'll review and white-list the file.   But just wondering if anyone else had encountered that problem, and if there was an easier workaround than waiting for McAfee to maybe respond to my e-mail.

Thanks in advance!

Eh this again. I used older version of PyInstaller and I'm quite sure that it was also used to pack some malware. So once in a while some AV are going nuclear.

https://www.virustotal.com/pl/file/57c82121624da2d898953e38b9301865b3ef82feeb9fe603751148089d958caf/analysis/1452190949/

As you can see only McAfee and some third world AV used by nobody have a problem. I will repackage next release so false alarms will go away.

Wrapper was updated again.

McAfee no longer reports false positive. Decreased default music volume and added volume control.

I haven't played since 6.42 so looking forward to the changes. Finding I'm having a problem with the portable version though - changed computer a few months ago so the portable version I downloaded a few hours ago is the first time Aurora has been on this machine (Win10). When I launch from Aurora_Wrapper I get a cool background and music (yay, music) but if I alt tab out to anything else then return to Aurora the game disappears leaving just the background and no way I can see to re-display the game window. It doesn't appear to be a problem if I use the actual Aurora exe from the same folder though. Any ideas?

Only first Aurora window don't show on taskbar. After that you definitely should have two separate entries.

Even when i run it as administrator it still says i do not have enough permission to run the all in one launcher for the full installer and even the wrapper does the same ug i just wanted to use system view and not have to install a bunch of third party crap that just junks up my computer I love the game when i did play it for several hours but then i just had to have the system view because my workaround was getting tedious and now my several hour game is lost and when i try and find a dang fix i get redirected to here or told to download a bunch of extra crap  love your work just wish i did not need to go to heck and back just to play it fully working and not partially

I'm curious if it's at all possible to get the 6.4.3 version of this?  I'd like to move my game to my Win10 system now that I'm done with the joyful fun of registry entries to finally fix some highly annoying errors(I want Vista back and I feel dirty for even thinking that!).

However, I'm not sure how to get it.  Don't want to restart in 7.x, I'm too far in.  Thanks.

I'd guess that you could just copy the 6.4.3 database and .exe over the latest portable installation. Of course, I'm not a programmer of any kind, so you should probably back up your game first, in the very likely case that I wrong.

hi everyone!
Thank you for a very challenging game.
I recently tested the Aurora (a few months), with the portable version (with wrapper, by AcidWeb) but I have a small suggestion:
- Place the wrapper in resizable window.
At this time I play with 2 monitors, but having the wrapper in fullscreen, I can not use one of the monitors for other tasks.

Excellent job
Thank you

Was going to post the same thing.   And if you have large resolution monitors you can't hide the economics window along spreadsheets.   :(

EDIT: Turns out you can, but you have to select windows in the correct order . . .  or something.  Sometimes the wallpaper pops up.

Bug in 6. 41 Launcher.  If Aurora is installed in a directory with a space, the following error occurs when accessing the System Information page (F9).  This happens on Windows 7 64-bit.  Works fine if the space is removed from the directory name.

Code: [Select]
Error 713 was generated by Aurora
Class not registered.
You need the following file to be installed on your machine. MSSTDFMT.DLL.

Installed Portable 7.1 - just downloaded an hour ago.
Installed both linked vs_redist's (2015) - still error and crash of Aurora (-1).
It's on NTFS and no spaces in folder name (G:\Aurora).

You wrote you've tested Windows 10 (?) x64 - I use Windows 10 Pro x64.
Checked against my prior Windows 7 Pro x64 installation - different gif's and bmp's as expected but anything else is identically (except fresh Stevefire.mdb).
Which means MSSTDFMT.DLL is not missing but "not registered".

Language Pack is English (US) while Keyboard switched automatically from German (DE) to US (US). Number format is either English (decimal dot and grouping/separator comma).

While Steve wrote that starting Aurora and exit would reset the Windows menus that's not what happend. I had to change the theme to revert it back to normal.

Have I something forgotten?
I would really appreciate not being forced to install two decades old dll's into Windows 10 ;)

Currently most common cause of -1 error is lack of any enabled audio device. I will fix it in next release.

Theme problems are normal. Steve shutdown code don't fix everything.

Your wrapper messes with the infinite screen software I use to be able to play aurora, probably because the game windows are tied to it. If I launch with it, the windows stay static if I scroll my screen.

Second (short) try, lost a whole bunch before posting :(

Audio device is enabled; using Aurora.ini (portable default) I hear music right after starting Aurora Wrapper.
Enabling music and voice ingame doesn't make a difference.
Also "musicdisabled = 1" nor "musicvolume = 90.3" has any effect - same loudness.

Your MSSTDFMT.DLL and MSVBVM60.DLL are exactly the same as I could find (just in case).

Running 3840x2160 side by side with 1920x1080 background overlaps ~50% (eye measured) of the second display. You can handle this i.e. with Alt-Tab. Win-Shift-RigthArrow will place any Aurora-Window far outside - just use drag 'n' drop instead. No problem using Excel side by side with Aurora Portable.

Galactic Map will become hidden after opening System Map. Same for some other windows and Map occasionally and vice versa.

Tested compatibility modes: 95/98/Me end up with "Fatal Error!" while XP/XP SP2/XP SP3/Vista/7/8 end up with reported one.

So far (tested all documented (Ctrl-)F?? and Ctrl-?) it seems only System Information (F9 and Ctrl-A + Open) is affected.

Hope that helps...

I've found out 4 different versions, 2 of them at microsoft. Your version of 1999 and the latest date of 2010. Made no difference (as expected).
I've also checked your code at GitHub. For some reason line 133 (Aurora.py) isn't executed properly.
Aurora_Wrapper is started with Admin but MSSTDFMT.DLL isn't registered. When I register it by my own using
Code: [Select]
G:\Aurora>regsvr32 msstdfmt.dll it works.

Here's a batchfile
Code: [Select]
[member=559]Echo[/member] off
cd /D G:\Aurora
regsvr32 /s msstdfmt.dll
start "" /D "G:\Aurora" /B "Aurora_Wrapper.exe"
pause
regsvr32 /s /u msstdfmt.dll
Use a shortcut to force Administrator. "/WAIT" doesn't work for x86, therefore pause is necessary.

And a powerscript
Code: [Select]
if (!([Security.Principal.WindowsPrincipal][Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity]::GetCurrent()).IsInRole([Security.Principal.WindowsBuiltInRole] "Administrator")) {
   Start-Process powershell.exe "-NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File `"$PSCommandPath`"" -Verb RunAs;
   exit
}
cd G:\Aurora
regsvr32 /s msstdfmt.dll
start G:\Aurora\Aurora_Wrapper.exe -Wait
regsvr32 /s /u msstdfmt.dll
which forces Administrator by itself.

Neither will restore the theme. Maybe someone else could help?

Note: Keep in mind to change the location depending on your installation properly! Mine is "G:\Aurora".

I've "found" the music related keys - they are below my visual screen ;)
Seems the wrapper wraps about 5760x3240 centered at primary display (1.5 times 3840x2160).

The next release is gonna be C# Aurora which will be a year away. You can open up taskmanager and kill the wrapper after launching aurora so the background image obviously isnt essential to anything happening. There really isnt any excuse why its not configurable.

If you kill wrapper before ending Aurora all changes make by it will not be reverted on Aurora shutdown.

Changes which have no ill effects.  On the other hand the image itself breaks your desktop making it inaccessible.

Honest question:  why does the image even exist?  What was the intended goal in disabling the users desktop while playing?
Title: Re: Portable release - comments

Well if that changes don't have any ill effects on your system then you don't need wrapper at all.

Its the only clean installer.  Vanilla install is a hackjob of manually piecing together all the parts to get up to date.  I also like the built in music.  I dont like losing access to my desktop. Many other people have complained about losing access to their desktop too. Yes I personally can launch the aurora.exe without the wrapper and play fine but many people cant.

I don't know if this was ever made an option but as of the current releases of both portable and full game you can access the desktop with the wrapper running on Windows systems at the very least.

ALT+TAB and START+TAB are wonderful things, and hitting the Start menu key on keyboards that have it still brings up the taskbar with the "Show Desktop" button that still works.

The one thing I have noticed is that many of the other Windows popup boxes are recolored with Aurora's theme (which I don't mind) and all of the text in dropdown menus in Waterfox and LibreOffice becomes the Aurora yellow color (which is really annoying because I can't read the text any more.) These effects stop upon closing Aurora and its wrapper. Usually the wrapper closes when the game exits, but not always.

That is Aurora doing that, not the wrapper. If you exit Aurora via menu, it is supposed to revert the colors.

Fun fact - Wrapper exit only if game exit completely. If wrapper stay - that means Aurora is still runnning even if window is not visible.

The wrapper hangs on exit sometimes if you don't explicitly select the Game->Exit option on the menu (I'm on a fully-updated Windows 10). If you just press the X button, it'll stick around - but, again, it seems random whether it happens or not. It doesn't seem to break anything if you just kill it via Task Manager, though.

Also had a problem with MSSTDFMT.DLL, but registering it manually via command line solved the issue.

I don''t know if anyone has mentioned it but there is a bug with the wrapper.  It causes a duplication of the sensors options in the game config menu

Got bored, here is a version of the executable that should work without presenting the background.

Notably, I couldn't get the database compression tool working (probably because the environment i compiled with is so half assed) so when it backs up the game files it just goes ahead and copies them without any further modification.

Just copy the contents of the attached zip into the aurora folder to replace the existing aurora wrapper stuff.

Check the Bugs and Installation and Mechanics sub-forums - this issue is quite common and the fix is explained in several threads under different boards.

Someone recently asked me where track 3 and 9 were, after checking the download I realized they're missing, so I found a link to them if anyone is interested. Of course you can put whatever you want in there.
