The Unified Commonwealth of Earth -

Overview -
Founded in the wake of the catastrophic 'Troubadour' asteroid's impact on the continent of Africa in 2027, which saw the mass disruption of the planet's tectonics and caused a near-extinction level event, the Commonwealth was formed from the amalgamated remnants of the world's governments in a bid to provide cohesive assistance to the affected areas, as well as formulating plans to combat the threat of another such impact. Part of this was the 'Freerunner' Program, a development aimed at terraforming other bodies and encouraging mass colonisation in an effort to stave off the possibility of another cataclysmic event like 'Troubadour' happening again.

By 2033, colonies had been founded on Luna and Mars, while mass system-wide surveys were carried out. After the invention of the famous FTL device, the Pinfolder, attempts were made to identify the areas of the solar system where the Pinfolder would work at maximum efficiency, an effort only delayed when civil war broke out between the Commonwealth and the unruly Mars colony. In the end, the Commonwealth was forced to allow the Martians to leave their rule, and both sides have studiously ignored each other ever since. Now that humanity is in a position to spread into other star systems, only time will tell if the Commonwealth decides to permit this state of affairs to continue.

National Characteristics -
Thanks to their experiences with the Republic, the average Earther has a less than healthy disregard for their Martian counterparts, and look down on the latter's tendency to build enclosed arenas for habitation, arguing that terraforming the land is a more preferable idea. Relations between Earth and Luna, while cordial, are often tinged with friendly humour as Earthers affectionately refer to their fellow citizens as 'loonies'.

Fleet -

First built in 2032, the Earth-class Destroyer was an attempt to construct a space-going vessel capable of intercepting and destroying any incoming meteors that threatened to provide Earth with a repeat of the 'Troubadour' Impact, to protect the homes of humans from devastation from above. It is perhaps the ultimate irony that its first action saw the class-leader, the Commonwealth State Ship Earth, sent to Mars where it was intended to threaten the unruly colonists into withdrawing their secession proclamation, but the ship was forced to retire in disgrace when Mars' mass drivers were deployed as a threat. Currently only the CSS Earth is in-service, with no plans as of yet to introduce any more into service.

Introduced in 2049, the new Turkmenistan-class Frigates are named in honour of the role that Turkmenistan was the launch-site for the first colonist ships that sent humans to live on Luna. It was only in the wake of the Nicomachean Republic's decision to launch several of their Conejara-class warships that the Turkmenistan-class were developed, allowing the Commonwealth a second claim to dubious fame; the builders of the first armed spacecraft intended explicitly for military use against other humans.

Launched in 2041, the Ptolemy's had finally finished mapping the Solar System by 2047, and this success was marred only by the fact that the gathered information was quickly leaked by unknown parties.

So, I've decided to start a new game and document it properly this time. For those who may ask; the Pinfolder is something I came up with working on a project for a sci-fi universe of my own, and I'm choosing to represent the Jump Points in the game as being areas where the Pinfolder is especially suited to work.

The Nicomachean Republic -
Based on the world of Mars, the Republic owes its nature to the influential role of Latin-American businessman Alejandro Arce, who used his considerable wealth to influence the early provisional rule of Mars. It was his actions that saw the Republic slide further away from the original democratic tendencies of the Commonwealth in favour of setting up a new government based upon ancient Aristotelian principles, whereby a man's worth dictated his worth to society and that those who could contribute to society would increase their worth, and nowhere was this precedent illustrated better than by the scientist Levi Pinfold, who was the first man to invent a method of Faster-Than-Light travel. Dr Pinfold still resides on Mars as somewhat of a recluse, a status afforded to him by his now huge fortune.

But despite all this, the Martians began to resent what they saw as the high-handed lecturing of Earth, and rejected the oversight of the Commonwealth, citing concerns over the way it intended to keep pouring yet more immigrants to the habdomes of Mars, the provisional government declared formal succession in 2035. Under the threat of the Commonwealth warship, CSS Earth, Arce made an infamous broadcast threatening to unleash Mars' mass drivers as weapons of mass destruction upon humanity's birthplace should it not permit the colony to break away. When Earth agreed, the Martians celebrated by declaring the 2nd of May, 2036, as the Day of Liberation, from which the Nicomachean Republic was officially dated to start.

Thanks to the prevalence of enclosed environments required to sustain human life on Mars, the people of the Republic are quite at ease with enclosed spaces, and are as content to live aboard orbital platforms as they are in ground habitations.

Fleet -

Built in 2042, the Andalusia-class was touted as the Republic's answer to the role of the Commonwealth's Earth-class destroyer in engaging incoming rogue meteors that posed an imminent danger to the planetary population. In reality, this was only part of the reasoning behind its design, and those who of the Republic's people who had been involved in designing the Earth-class were involved in the Andalusia's construction in an effort to design a vessel capable of matching the larger ship.

While the Andalusia-class are individually smaller than the Earth-class, each one boasts a one-hundred percent increase in range over the larger warship, and the smaller manufacturing requirements for each one allows the Republic to have produced more than any other power.

Only since 2048 has the Republic's inwards-focused attention turned outwards in the wake of the Commonwealth's discovery of multiple jump-points dotting the Solar System. It is perhaps, no surprise that they would decide to design a ship capable of resettling those honoured to be chosen onto other worlds, and the Santa Maria-class was designed to also carry a moderate cargo capacity.

The Kurogasai Corporate Territories -

Overview -
Unlike the other two powers of Sol, the Territories are the possessions of the fabulously wealthy Kurogasai Corporation. It was Kurogasai who worked on the advanced terraforming techniques that the Commonwealth required for the 'Freerunner' Program, and in return for their work they asked for, and received, possession of the major moons of Jupiter, something eagerly granted by the Commonwealth's leaders. After moving to Callisto in 2042, Kurogasai implemented a policy of relative isolation, fed by rumours of genetic manipulation and unethical lines of research. Ever since, the Corporation has moved to occupy the other major moons, amongst which the already decidedly low population has been split.

National Characteristics -
Despite its foundation as a Japanese business, the Corporation of 2050 is a decidedly multi-ethnic society. Kurogasai itself is now so large that it operates as an umbrella, allowing smaller sub-groups of businesses to undertake work in the Territories. Those few citizen-shareholders of Kurogasai seen abroad are often marked by social recluse, and in extreme cases, cybernetic enhancements.

Fleet -

While the corporation's 'fleet' is unique in lacking any form of true mobile armed platform, the Kurogasai Defence Unit doesn't lack for means with which to defend the territory of the Kurogasai Corporation, thanks to the development of the Tatsumaki-class satellites. Free from having to man armed vessels, with the implications for security and trust that such would bring, the KDU adopted a policy of observing manoeuvres conducted by both the Commonwealth and the Republic in mid-2048. Most people tend to discount the KDU as being little more than overpaid watchmen, but those who've met the keenly attentive liaison officers from it have been quick to adjust their own views.

Unlike the Republic, Kurogasai made no effort to pretend the Tatsumaki-class was manufactured for meteor defence, preferring to keep silent on the matter.
