This campaign is intended to test Diplomacy and the new System Design mechanics. With that in mind, I've decided to create a Battlestar Galactica-themed campaign. This is not a 'rag-tag fleet' scenario, but rather the Twelve Colonies expanding into space. The home system for the twelve colonies is a quaternary and is based on the system shown below, which I found online. This was a very good exercise to test the system design and I have made quite a few UI tweaks to make the process smoother. This is post is entirely about the starting system. I'll cover the economic and military aspects in a follow-up post.

As the above material has a total system population of close to thirty billion, I am using 5% of the numbers with a few tweaks for starting populations. Here are screenshots of how the system translated to Aurora. Note that in the D system, two of the terrestrial worlds are in the L4 and L5 points of the gas giant

Colonial Ship Designs Part 1: Colonial Fleet

The Galactica class Battlestar forms the core of the Colonial Fleet and provides its primary combat power. Twelve are in service, with one ship representing each colony. The Galactica class is equipped with railguns and gauss cannons that provide a devastating close combat capability, as well as defending the ship against potential missile attack. Even though missiles have never been used within the Colonial Fleet, they still present a theoretical threat from potential future adversaries once the Fleet leaves the Helios system. Long-range striking power is provided by thirty-six Viper class fighters, each one of which is equipped with a single 10cm railgun. Four Raptor-S recon craft provide a jump-capable, long-range reconnaissance capability, plus sensor support for the fighter group. A pair of Raptor-M assault transports allow the Battlestar to board and capture hostile ships.

The smaller and slower Valkyrie class Battlestar, four of which are in service, is intended for long-range exploration missions. Armour and firepower are around half that of the Galactica class, but the endurance is far greater. The Valkyrie can operate away from home from three years, compared to a single year for the Galactica. The strike group is focused on the exploration mission with three geological survey Raptors, three gravitational survey Raptors and two recon Raptors, all of which are jump-capable, plus a small squadron of eight Vipers for protection.

The Viper class fighter fulfils the long-range strike role for the Colonial Fleet. Armed with an Ares Kinetics AK-10 Railgun, the Viper can engage hostile ships within its operational range of six hundred million kilometres or provide close-in defence of its parent Battlestar. Anti-missile capability is enhanced due to the combination of the Viper's speed and its Hyperion fire control system. The Viper has inherent sensor capability with a range of up to seven million kilometres and has sufficient maintenance capacity to repair its railgun.

The jump-capable Raptor-S is the eyes and ears of the Colonial Fleet. With a capable sensor suite, a range of over eighteen billion kilometres and an operational endurance of sixteen months, the Raptor-S can detect and classify hostile forces long before they pose a threat to the Colonies or the Colonial Fleet. The Raptor-S may also accompany Viper squadrons on missions to provide local sensor support.

The Raptor-G and Raptor-R models are conversions of the original Raptor-S model, replacing the sensor suite of the S model with geological and gravitational survey sensors respectively. The Zeus Drive Systems ZDS-80 Ion Drive from the Raptor-S is replaced with the ZDS-56E, which provides less power but is far more fuel efficient, giving the G and R models a range of almost forty-five billion kilometres. The Raptor-G is shown below.

The Raptor-M is an assault transport version of the ubiquitous Raptor hull. The ZDS-80 is replaced by the ZDS-160B Boosted Ion Drive, which massively reduces range in exchange for high speed, while the jump drive and sensor suite are removed to make room for a troop capacity of 500 tons. A boarding-capable Marine Raiding Force, comprising sixty Colonial Marine Raiders, fifteen Colonial Marine Raider LMG teams and a command section of four, has a transport capacity of five hundred tons.

The Loki class jump cruiser provides jump capability for Exploration Groups. It has limited armour and no defensive capabilities, as the sole purpose of the ship is to mount the massive Apollo-36 Military Jump Drive. An Exploration Group will unusually include two Valkyries and their strike groups, a Loki class jump cruiser and a Tylium class tanker.

The Valkyrie class Battlestars and Loki class jump cruisers are based at Caprica.

Colonial Ship Designs Part 2: Commercial Shipping

The Ragnar Anchorage is a huge space station orbiting the gas giant Ragnar. The station can harvest its own fuel and service two Galactica class Battlestars simultaneously. Ships can jump close to the station by using the Lagrange point of Sigard, the gas giant's single moon. Ragnar is the sole source of gaseous Sorium in the Helios system and the centre of fuel mining operations. Due to its importance, at least one Battlestar is usually on station.

The small outposts on Minos and Pallas are each garrisoned by a Marine Company. Six Tank Battalions are based on Picon as a central reserve, while each of the twenty-four Raptor-M assault transports carries a single Marine Raiding Force.

Rank Structure

Below is the rank structure for the Twelve Colonies. Battlestar Galactica uses a weird rank structure that starts with three naval ranks, then moves to three army ranks (possibly four) followed by the BSG-only rank of Commander, which is apparently equivalent to Brigadier, Commodore or Rear Admiral Lower Half, then moves back to the navy for Admiral ranks.

If all the ranks mentioned in the series are used, there is one rank too many to neatly match the US or UK rank structure. As there is only one Lieutenant Colonel mentioned in the entire series (Jack Fisk of the Pegasus), I've decided to drop that rank and move everything below up one rank, which seems a lot neater. Below is a link with the rank information for BSG plus a table to show the ranks I am now using and how they match US/UK ranks.
