Oddly enough, the entire board is german for me for some reason now, the interface that is. I'll figure out how to fix it, though.

Hey,

I forgot my password yet again, but the reset link isn't working.  Could use an email.  Username is Nightstar.  Thanks.

For debugging purposes, I get this message:
"A mail has been sent to your email address.  Click the link in that mail to set a new password. "
but no email.  No, it didn't end up in spam either.

Apparently I can't post to the New Features thread anymore - it gives me a 403 Forbidden: You don't have permission to access /index.php on this server.
According to a semi-recent post by MarcAFK it might be due to the appearance of certain words/phrases which are "forbidden", but I didn't write anything out of the ordinary there...

You're talking about : this http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php?topic=7958.0
Try posting half of the paragraph, then try the rest in another post, that worked for me.
There was a really odd error a while ago that was preventing posts containing certain words and phrases, this seems suspiciously related.
Title: Re: Thread for board issues
Post by: AL on October 16, 2015, 07:23:03 AM
That was indeed the thread I was referring to. I tried what you suggested, but the second half still gave an error when I tried posting it. Doesn't matter too much though, it wasn't that important.

If the word case is anywhere in the post put it into italics or ensure it doesn't have a space before or after it.
The following triggers the error except when any of the words is in italics, spoilered, in code, etc, each word must have a space before and after it;
" case if then "
Title: Re: Thread for board issues

Title: Re: Thread for board issues
Post by: Erik L on October 16, 2015, 08:21:53 AM
case if then fails when I had spaces before and after.

It seems as if there is some way the message text is being parsed as php code.

This is the same as last time, remember how that was caused by "like " ...
Well look at that, I can't post like with a space after it in quotes again.

Approvals are manual, and no one watches to see the exact second when one appears. So it will take time. Especially if it comes in after I've gone to bed.

That's correct, the recent patch was originally meant to be version 6.50, after more major changes steve decided it should be released as 7.0, but forgot to change the version shown on that window. For reference the last version was 6.43 so you're definitely using the newest one.

I sent you another email. For the 2nd account, I usually check for duplicates, and if I find one I disallow the duplicate account.

Usually it's quicker to send me a message and I can sort it out.

Since I don't send one out, you won't get one.

And since I am the only one approving accounts, it takes a while. It is not an automated process, and most likely will never be one.

To be honest, I never really used it for chatting. I did however check it to see how many people were online at a time (more convenient than scrolling to the bottom of the homepage).
And while I'm here, could you set up a wiki account for me? I figure I may as well have one in case some serious work needs to be done with this new influx of players (56 guests viewing the board at the moment, that's the most I think I've seen for a while).

Bounced around here a lot reading quite a bit yesterday and received many, many 500, 403, and system resource errors (resource errors were server side).   It was a pain but I just brute forced my way through the errors until the given page decided to load so I thought I'd mention.

More difficult, however, was the kaptcha when attempting to register - the picture completely refused to load.   Fortunately, the Listen to the letters link below it worked (after brute forcing my way to get the thing to load - and, of course, when the computer speaks them, b, d, v, c, t, e, g, and p all sound very similar (this was maddening to say the least).   Again, just an FYI but also wanted to mention in case anyone else is having the same trouble with the kapthca while trying to register

Note: the kaptcha for posting this note is displaying so perhaps it's fixed?  In case it matters, I'm using Chrome.

The forums are showing up on Google searches now. Didn't they used to not be indexed for web searches? Maybe the 150+ guests we keep getting are from web crawlers that have begun accessing the forums since the forums got upgraded. Although the upgrade was back in October, wasn't it? And the rush of guests seems to have started around New Years Eve.

A quick bit of Googling shows a number of posts promoting 7.X in the past week, including on Reddit and a number of other video and forum sites, so maybe we've just been Farked.

I'd like to tell you why you are experiencing so much traffic over the past couple of days.
Quill18, a youtuber, with ~300000 subscribers has started a video series about Aurora a few days ago.   The comment section is full of compliments for the game.
I think the guests in your forums are his viewers who'd like to check out the game themselves - me included.   ;-)

Is there anything at all which will resolve the 500 internal server error?

A new host, less traffic, less cpu usage... The host put some crapware on that shoots the cpu/memory usage up, then throttles me because the cpu/memory usage is up...

I'm looking at a new host. It's a VPS solution so the domain would be on it's only little island, unlike now. Monthly cost will double from $25 to $50. And of course they want the first year up front. That will have to wait until next weekend.

I don't know what kind of monthly traffic you're getting here, but you can get 20 TB of monthly traffic on an own physical server with one month cancellation period for 35€ / month (38$ right now) from Hetzner (just an example, I'm sure there are plenty more out there).  I wouldn't take those first year up front deals unless I know the service (and server) is good.

Of course VPS's should be even a bit cheaper, at least on central european pricing.

Just felt the urgent need to share my experience, as I've had some bad ones at certain hosts. . .  :)

While Steve is in the UK, I am in the US. So I've been looking at US-based hosts. The plan I currently have is considered a "Business Premium" plan, geared towards a small business. One would think that would include enough server resources to handle a couple of downloads and a forum. My current host's Enterprise plan starts at $150/month, and so is out of the question unless I start charging for access to things (which I am very loathe to do for a free game). The VPS I've been looking at is $50/month (which is also the top-end of what I consider reasonable). They say they support the requirements I gave them, and they have a cancellation policy.

Since off-loading the downloads to dropbox, server traffic has dropped from an average of 65.02g/day to 2.62g/day. So maybe that will be enough to even things out.

Six hundred and fifty people a day are downloading aurora?
Edit: the forum is running sweet right now, no errors at my end, and fast page load.
The wiki is slow but running.
Edit: spoke too soon apparently, errors now :(

Wrapper hosting currently burn 150-200GB of traffic every day...

But that is not issue for me  ;D

It's not really the bandwidth that is the issue, but the associated http requests.

A hint for the sudden loadspike: Quill18 (https://www.youtube.com/user/quill18/videos?shelf_id=1&sort=dd&view=0) a popular LetsPlayer on youtube has an LP out for Aurora and on average 12000-15000 views on his videos that could be why you see so much traffic right now.

Nevermind it was posted some days ago and i didnt notice thanks to the errors.

Sounds to me like a bad host indeed.  I've been getting the dreaded 403 Forbidden error(including when trying to post the exact text that succeeded minutes earlier :P).  So it looks like I'm going to become an overnight poster in order to try to maintain sanity, if that works.  Can't speak for anyone else but I'm willing to contribute some to the cause to get a smoother forum.

Sorry to say this but you really dropped the ball with this migration.

Process that should take 10 minutes (not counting DNS records update) crippled forums for half week and caused pointless week long database rollback.

I hope that you will prepare better next time.

Not to be that gal, nor to minimize your justified feelings, but. . .  It could be worse.  Sure, it should've gone smoother, but unexpected traffic and costs have a way of making even surface-simple operations into complex and painful affairs; to say nothing of real life stressors, of which said unexpected traffic has a way of exacerbating. . .

Way I look at it.  I lost a fairly detailed post getting perhaps to the root of my inability to play this game.  But, hmn, it'll take me maybe ten-twenty minutes tops to recreate it; and it is my own fault for not paying attention to the big, red 'posts beyond the 16th will be lost due to migration' banner.  For those who post frequently I know it'll be more of a pain - but better the minor pain of lost posts then the site going down indefinitely.

Mmn, on a side note, the whole 'famous lets player, kids on my lawn, with their internets and the videos' explains why I was reminded of this by a friend whose most adventurous gaming experience was playing one of the Call of Duties blind.  I'm glad the game gets more exposure!

Erik,

Many thanks for hosting this forum and for looking into the website problems. I hope your efforts are appreciated by the majority of the forum members - I certainly do for without people like yourself there would be no means of either playing or understanding the game.

Nice to see the forums back up, aside from confirming all the above errors.  I have little to add except I'll be happy to look at contributing to costs as soon as I get back to work myself.

Otherwise, everything is running quickly for me right now.

Regarding the lawn comment, that was just me being silly, I'm not half as funny as I think I am.  ;)  I'm technically new here as well, given that I joined around two years back, haven't seen too many communities that are as friendly and helpful, and certainly hadn't meant to contribute elsewise.  But that's neither here nor there.  Keeping on topic, wanted to add that everything seems quick and responsive.

Yeah.  I tried to register and it says my account is still awaiting admin approval.

As before, with the deluge of new registrations I am only approving accounts once a day. If you have put one in, just wait a while. It will be approved. But don't put in more than one. That annoys me and I will either reject all of them, or randomly approve one. Depends on how I feel.

Nice to see the forums back up, sure the downtime was painful but considering the voluntary aspect of Aurora and the forums we're lucky to have the effort put in that Steve, Eric, and the others give to make this community run somewhat smoothly overall.
I do see what acid web is getting at though, but he should be thankful about the recent karma change, I imagine a few people might have gotten smite happy there.

I did the backup on the 16th. Attempted to use their automated tools to restore it on the 17th and 18th. On the 19th I put in a ticket for them to do the restore. This was done, however created a second CPanel account (don't ask me why). The DNS change was pretty quick, but with the dual CPanel accounts, the subdomains were not behaving nicely. That's what caused the long rollback and such.

I didn't change the DNS until after I knew the backup had been restored.

Are password resets sent out automatically or manually?

If it's manually you might want to change the "A mail has been sent to your email address. " message to something like "A mail will be sent to your email address within a day or two. " so people don't expect instant responses and spam the system tring again if they get nothing after a few minutes, assuming they made a mistake/typo or the system derped.

If it's automatic I've not recieved it; tried my user name and my email, just in case I registered with my old now-inaccessable email account and then reregistered with my new one and forgot about it(as the signup says my current email is in use here).

I didn't.  I used the automated password reset system on the board where it asks you to enter your user name or email address then says it's sent an email to your email address with the reset link; I never recieved an email for the password reset when entering my user name or when I tried again with my email which the board says was attached to an account here.

Nothing in the inbox or spam folder, and no blocked addresses, so I'm at a loss as to why I didn't get it.

*error* must construct additional python.

I think it is because the directory is called "math", but the code is expecting "Math". so when I get home and can deal with it on a computer rather than a tablet, I'll fix it. It was hard enough commenting out the lines in LocalSettings.php.

After logging in after a long time away (years?) i had a HUGE bank of notifications of thread mentions and what not scroll up on the right side of the screen. I clicked the first one, found a thread I'd participated in (years?) ago, and then missed all the rest of the notifications.

Is there another way to find them?  ???

The issue that has been happening seems to be some sort of traffic issue with SMF. Too many database read attempts come in and something in the software overwrites a critical file with a 0-byte version. I do have a back up of the file and upload it again. But it is annoying :)

I did not find an account with that user name. If you put something non-Aurora related as the reason why you wanted to join, then there is a chance your account needed to be activated. Those have a 14 day shelf life before they get deleted.
