I'm not sure any explicitly tutorial-type AARs are written!

There are multiple video tutorials on Youtube, which start from the very basics like what each button does, to more complicated things like how to design ships and create mineral economy and so on.

AAR's are generally more story focused and analysis is "in universe"-style.

I will check YT tutorials for ships and mineral economy for sure, but at the same time I'm looking for a detailed AAR to understand when you are doing well or not, for example: weapons research is a marginal thing at the beginning or do you need to build a few combat ships even before to survey the jump points?
Btw, do you know some good youtubers?

I'd say that research is pretty situational. It would depend heavily on what is happening in your campaign and what your current priorities are. Mineral/fuel situation within your starting system and around it, exploration and First Contact policies, etc. What sort of Navy would fit for that situation/priorities can differ as well.

It probably would be better to simply ask your questions right here, giving some specifics.

What is your Exploration and First Contact policies? How good is the economy/material base? What sort of Navy (if any?) you'd like to use? You can make almost anything work in Aurora.

Ok, therefore you adapt your strategy with the enviroment, but is it possible to be totally unaware of the enemy and at your first contact to be destroyed?
If so, do you plan a general strategy? (like a fleet docked in the home planet with a specify armament)


All the Blue Emu AAR are extensive, they involve the community (so there are plenty of good suggestion/discussion on tactics) and they go for hundreds of pages.

I read 2 of them probably 10 or more times. but this is the one I read the most:

Do you need to do any of that stuff?  No.

Should you do any of that stuff?  That is entirely a roleplaying decision for your empire.

What kind of Aurora do you want to play?  Do you want to be Batman-level prepared for anything and everything that might come after you?  Do you want to blindly and relentlessly explore every rock, contact, and star system that you know about?  Do you follow some written rule set for combat, preparedness, or research?  Do you hew closely to follow an historical or fictional example, or do you go freely wherever your mind takes you?

The only strategy to Aurora is "have fun!"  If your entire empire was wiped out tomorrow by spoilers, would you still have fun?  Would you start over?  Would you do anything differently?

In Aurora, you can build the absolutely most perfect fleet your empire is currently capable of, and still have it wiped out entirely by one piddly little high-tech enemy frigate if that is what the RNG decrees.

So my advice to you is to play the game.  Experiment.  Build whatever you want, research whatever you want, try all sorts of things.  Pick randomly, even.  See what the game has to offer, and when (if) you discover your ships/fleets aren't behaving how you'd like, or you get stumped over some aspect, we'll be here to answer your questions and offer advice.

Yeah, those 3 have the most Aurora content and their stuff is tutorial like so you can play as you watch them, learning as you go.

It is very possible to be destroyed at first contact. Aurora doesn't hold back in that aspect. However, it's also not trying to actively screw you over. It all depends on game settings.

Start with 0% NPR spawn chance, no NPRs at game start and unpick all 3 spoilers - you'll have an empty galaxy to explore and colonize. Some would say boring, others would find it useful to get the hang of game systems in peace. You can turn the spoilers on later as well as increase the NPR spawn chance later if you so wish.

I got into Aurora 4x at first by watching Quill18 and EnterElysium, but Ser Beardian offers a more skilled introduction in their let's plays.

Well... Let's look.

First, you may have different game settings. I, for one, started with 0% NPR generation chance, meaning my ships entering a system won't spawn a new Non-Player Race. Then, I had 2 "starting NPRs" that I could stumble into. Plus default SPOILERS races settings.  That alone could change a lot. I grew complacent fast and did not build up a big navy for a while because of the game settings.

Then, policies. How do you plan on expanding? Colonizing/terraforming? Harvest fuel or refine on planetary bodies? Do you want to, or do you HAVE to because there's no other option? Do you want to bravely explore all surrounding systems, or do you want to do it covertly? Are you afraid about the prospects of alien empire seeing your ships? Do you plan on shooting at them at first sight or would you rather have peace?

Then, comes the ship types/weapons & their employment strategy/tactics preferences. Do you want to focus more on guns or missiles? Both? Mixing it up? How do you want your fleet composition to look? How much resources do you have on hand that you can spend on building these ships? How much resources income do you have you can spend on MAINTAINing these ships? How expendable are they? How cheap they are, and their equipment?

All these points correspond to certain technologies you need to get and then maybe keep improving. Heck, when I got mineral shortages, and was unable to build ANY new ships at all, I switched most of my research to improve mineral production tech.  On the other hand, terraforming and fuel harvesting played almost 0 role for me. Also, I overengineered my ships to the point I could not afford to have a large navy. But I went for a peaceful solution in relations with my neighboring NPRs, even after a small shooting war.

So there's lots to think about, given specific circumstances.

Hi all,

even if I've started to play Aurora several years ago, I only made 3-4 games so far and all ended after few decades, I know I'm a bad person!

Now I'm playing another game and am willing to play 100 years at least but I'd like to read some other players experiences, especially about who starts with the Conventional Empire and describes which researches and ships have been important for his/her game.

Do you have any suggestions?
