Awesome.  Thanks, guys.

When disassembling items to get tech I usually need around 40 to get the item.  I don't think I have ever need more than 50, or less than 30, so that is a reasonable number to shoot for.

I believe dismantling gives 1-5% of the tech points, so anywhere from 20 to 100.

Can you make an educated guess at how many you need to get the tech?

I got mine in a previous game through ruins. Found a stockpile of them plus engines. Compressed fuel storage was a nice to have in the previous versions of the game, in 6.3 its a Godsend if you score them.

you can't get the tech itself, but if you get enough of them you can dismantle them for the tech. it takes 1000 RP worth of disassembling to get it however.

To clarify, it IS possible to get this technology by unearthing it in a ruins?

I'm thinking it's not possible to get it by breaking down captured components, but I'm not sure.

I've always greedily held on to any I found to put on advanced black ship projects.

I guess we can also add "conquest" to the list, then.  This was an NPR that was generated on the fly when I discovered their solar system, so I know they didn't get the tech from exploiting ruins or something.  They wouldn't have had the time, if NPRs even do that.

I think most of these special techs are only possible to unlock through capture, salvage or ruins.
Correct.  The compressed fuel storage system is one of the techs that you are only going to get from ruins or salvage.  There are no pre-requisites available to research.  It is also one of the few that does not have a set of techs that are unlocked by finding it.  For example if you get the Advanced 10cm Laser, you will be able to research the entire advanced laser tech.  It has the same steps as the normal laser tech tree does.

Got this in a previous game by conquering an NPR, but can't research it in my current game.  I've researched all the different sizes of fuel tanks... so what am I missing?  Does it require advanced cargo handling, or something like that, as a pre-requisite?
