That's Master of Orion, for those unfamiliar with the old Microprose classic.  For those who never played MoO, or can't find their old disks, or more likely can't get them to run on current computers, I'd like to point you in the direction of http://www.freeorion.org/index.php/Main_Page  Free Orion, a multi-platform open source Orion game.

So far I'm finding it better than MoO or MoO2.

Interesting, I have never heard of Free Orion, but will have to give it a try.  I loved the MoO and MoO2 classics.  Thanks for the link.

So far it's interesting, though I'm still getting used to the interface. But, I had a bad crash in my initial game and haven't had a chance to get back to it. Still, so far it seems pretty slick. :)

Thought I'd mention that Good Old Games (GOG.com) will be releasing Master of Orion and Master of Magic soon. For those of you not familiar with GOG.com, they update old Windows and DOS games to work on current Windows operating systems.

From their news release:
GOG.com continues to build its unmatched catalogue of classic PC games with the announcement of the deal with the famous worldwide publisher - Atari. The hit games will be added to the GOG.com catalogue throughout April and will include such glorious gems of yesteryear as Outcast, Master of Orion and Master of Magic. Today, during CD Projekt Spring Conference where the agreement with Atari was announced, Marcin Iwinski, Co-Founder of CD Projekt and GOG.com, said "This deal is really just the first step in what we expect will be a long and fruitful relationship. Atari has a tremendous number of cult classics within their grasp, and we hope to sign these in a near future!".

I still have the original Master of Magic, with all the original packaging. It is a great game.
