Largest civilian vessels
« on: September 09, 2011, 06:19:03 PM »
I'm wondering how large of civilian vessels everyone uses.  I stopped even trying to keep up with my own shipyards, the civilian industry has grown out of control.  To stem the tide of ships, I've designed ever larger ones:

My current freighter, that are being pumped out incessently:
Code: [Select]
Freighter Mk 5 class Freighter    360,450 tons     2514 Crew     9989.8 BP      TCS 7209  TH 28750  EM 0
3988 km/s     Armour 4-451     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/0     Damage Control Rating 1     PPV 0
MSP 17    Max Repair 90 MSP
Cargo 250000    Cargo Handling Multiplier 75

Supercharged Commercial Engine (80)    Power 359.375    Fuel Use 7.8%    Signature 359.375    Armour 0    Exp 2%
Fuel Capacity 800,000 Litres    Range 51.2 billion km   (148 days at full power)

This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes

Thats 360,000 tons of freighter, carrying 50 cargo loads for a total of ten installations per haul.  STILL they generate about one every 5-10 days.  Im considering doubling the size again when I get the next tech level in drives

I have a similar sized freighter and colony ship, but my civilians are still putting out the smaller sized ships.  I also have freighter/colony ships with jump engines, the civies haven't bought any of those yet.

Don't know why you'd want to keep civilian industry under control, they generate taxes and money, and don't use any of your fuel or minerals.

The more civvies you have the longer each interval takes.

That said, you know you can just obsolete designs and civvies stop making them right Thiosk?

yeah i know I obsolete them as I develop new designs... I'd just rather they build 1 50-cargo hold freighter rather than 10 5-cargo hold freighters!  Definitely don't forget to obsolete the smaller designs james, if you want to stop them building tiny freighters.

The civvies go absolutely crazy with constructing ships if they have the cash, within a couple of years and 10 grand a civilian line threw up atleast 10 freighters that cost ~600 BP. It's definitely worth it to obsolete the ships eventually if you like your time.

I had to double the design sizes again, as they were launching 3 or 4 10,000 bp ships per 5 day increment.  bringing both the colony ship and freighter up to 22,000 bp; the latter clocking in at 760,000 tons with 100 cargo holds and a gaggle of CIWS and a 6kms speed.  It appears I've finally slowed them down a bit ;)  I have never been so rich.  I'm sitting on a million bones (also known as a million pounds of cash money dollars), and the civilians have apparently satiated the industrial demand of... everyone.

Just need to let my mineral production capacity (currently galicite limited) go over a certain point and i'll be off to the races.

Yeah, after my horde of 15 civilian ships satisfied the demands of Mars and Earth the sole shipping lane started going broke due to no trade left. Funny stuff. They have about half a million tons worth of ships, mostly freighters.

I'm currently waiting out one of the long interval limbos that you get from NPRs fighting. Steve, y u change designer password?!

Steve, y u change designer password?!

Because someone on another forum was offering it to anyone who wanted it :(. If I have no idea who has it, then any bug report could be someone who inadverently screwed up their game in designer mode and doesn't realise it.

Steve

People who play around with the raw data of a game and then posts bug reports saying that this and that don't work are just morons. Unfortunatly, it's hard to tell that.

That's a shame. Ridiculous bugs were the first reason I wanted the dev password, too.

My largest ship currently in service is the >600,000 ton Sulphuric class Super-Freighter:

Sulphuric class Heavy Freighter    636,150 tons     3515 Crew     11719 BP      TCS 12723  TH 34375  EM 0
2701 km/s     Armour 1-658     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/0     Damage Control Rating 20     PPV 0
MSP 230    Max Repair 86 MSP
Cargo 500000    Cargo Handling Multiplier 300

Magnetic Confinement Fusion Drive Civ Mil (100)    Power 343.75    Fuel Use 6%    Signature 343.75    Armour 0    Exp 2%

This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes

Although a colony ship based on the same basic design is nearly finished, and it outweighs it by a hundred tons:

Hydrochloric class Super-Transporter    636,250 tons     5025 Crew     30749 BP      TCS 12725  TH 34375  EM 0
2701 km/s     Armour 1-658     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/0     Damage Control Rating 20     PPV 0
MSP 604    Max Repair 86 MSP
Colonists 2000000    Cargo Handling Multiplier 300

Magnetic Confinement Fusion Drive Civ Mil (100)    Power 343.75    Fuel Use 6%    Signature 343.75    Armour 0    Exp 2%

are you running these ships yourself, or are civ industry producing them?

They are government run freighters, they're too expensive for any of my civilian lines yet. I wasn't sure from the OP whether you meant civilian run or civilian classed, so I guessed. The largest one in civilian ownership thus far is:

Dervish class Freighter    242,650 tons     1186 Crew     2626.5 BP      TCS 4853  TH 6000  EM 0
1236 km/s     Armour 1-346     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/0     Damage Control Rating 15     PPV 0
MSP 101    Max Repair 50 MSP
Cargo 200000    Cargo Handling Multiplier 50

Magneto-plasma Drive E5 C (30)    Power 200    Fuel Use 5%    Signature 200    Armour 0    Exp 1%
Fuel Capacity 100,000 Litres    Range 14.8 billion km   (138 days at full power)

This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes

However, I believe they would have a larger class, but they had just purchased the Dervish when the new class was designed, which left them fairly low on money (the other company at that point was giving out more in dividends than it was making, so wasn't really in a situation to do anything) and by the time they had more money the larger design had been obsoleted (and I subsequently decided to offer smaller, cheaper, faster vessels for civilian lines, which they've so far been building instead). Although the military is sticking to running the larger freighters and my civilians haven't bought anything for a while despite having the funds, so they may end up with enough money to purchase one of those designs.

Ah yes, i was most interested in which vessels the civilian industry were purchasing and using.  My empire, before the universe crashed to desktop, was building about one of the largest 700kt+ vessels per month.

In my next game, I will aggressively scale up civ vessel size to circumvent the near exponential growth in number of civilian vessels.

Launched a new largest government owned ship:
X-5M class Super-Transporter    2,399,450 tons     18455 Crew     97891.6 BP      TCS 47989  TH 171875  EM 0
3581 km/s     Armour 1-1596     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/0     Damage Control Rating 5     PPV 0
MSP 127    Max Repair 100 MSP
Colonists 5000000    Habitation Capacity 100,000    Cargo Handling Multiplier 200    Tractor Beam

Magnetic Confinement Fusion Drive Civ Mil (500)    Power 343.75    Fuel Use 6%    Signature 343.75    Armour 0    Exp 2%
Fuel Capacity 5,000,000 Litres    Range 62.5 billion km   (202 days at full power)

This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes
This design is classed as an Orbital Habitat for construction purposes

At ~98,000 build points I don't see either of my civilian lines buying it any time soon though (they're bringing in around 2k per year, giving out 750 in dividend).
