Huge contact sensor
« on: January 17, 2010, 05:40:24 PM »
As this is my first post, I feel obliged to start by thanking Steve for this great game. I haven't got so deep into a game in a long time. Kudos!!!

Now back to my question. I jumped a scout into an empty system. One star, no planets, no chunks, nothing at all. Then I'm "hit" by a monster active sensor, 33000 in strength, 100 resolution. The best (and biggest) level 3 active sensor I can build could barely reach 8000. My alien cannot make more than 1000km/s, so I was able to ran as far as possible and shut down my engines (laying low...).

Am I blessed with a precursor?

Usually Precursors are much much faster than 1000km/s. My guess is that it is a NPR that has very good sensor tech.

my racial tech gave me massive sensors personally, and really big but unagile missiles with a lot of kick, it's all a gamble

I decided to make a dash for the Warp Point. A few million miles away from it I am hit again by the massive active sensor. The emitter slowly starts moving towards me, 1000 km/s versus my 3000 km/s. I am thinking "I'm good! I'll get away!".

No such luck. Another couple of minutes and some pesky secondary thermal contacts (35 in all) start zipping at 9999 km/s towards me, from the WP neighborhood this time. A mix of kinetic weapons finished me several moments later.

So I still think these are precursors (the huge speed of the smaller crafts + huge sensor for the main spaceship). Do precursors have carrier/fighters combos?

They aren't precursors but they aren't an NPR either. This is a new threat that appeared in v4.8 :)

Should I start praying then?

Is this threat going to stay local to that system, or should I plan for guests? Steve, let there be a little light on the subject (not a lot, as some surprise is always welcome!).

If you build (or found!) a jump gate out of that system, you're doomed.  If not, keep your fingers crossed.

This particular threat expands in a different way to both Precursors and NPRs. It may take a while but it won't stay in that system forever.

I'm going on a limb here, but I'm going to guess that Steve has put in something like a Death Star, or a planet-sized ark filled with nasties!

Fortunately, there are no jump gates on either side, so it seems I have time on my side. For the moment, several months have passed and my scout is still unharmed in his corner, busy picketing its way point at 1km/s...

I forgot to mention that my scout is laying low after I reloaded from a previous save (before my madly dash for freedom)...

What if they start off in a starless nexus though?! (like in my current game) They have nothing to work on then :)

*covers ears* La-La-La I'm not reading this thread....

John

PS - It just occured to me that the little bit I did read reminds me of the rumblings of strange happenings from Season 1 of B5.  Thanks Steve for sneaking a new threat in and not telling us about it.
