Annoying NPR's
« on: May 10, 2019, 02:21:38 PM »
Hey.

I have some annoying NPR's hanging around the Sol system, with occasional flyby's of Earth, which is giving my missile base commanders the heebie-jeebie's. Is there a way, short of shooting them, to get them to leave. What I'd like is to be able to set up an exclusion zone with them, but my google-fu is weak, and I have found no reference to any such thing.

Is it possible to set exclusion zones with aliens??

It is not.  Only your own civilians will respect an exclusion zone.

Sadly, even relentlessly destroying every ship you see will not stop an NPR from invading a system.  Frequently with unescorted, unarmed gate builders or survey ships.

Subjugate or exterminate, your only options.

I seriously considered it :)

I was deterred because I was going through a fuel crisis at the time - I had less than 5 million litres in fuel and it was disappearing at an alarming rate; so I really need to fix this (and get more fuel efficient engines) before I start a war.

It's all good now - they spent a month floating around sol before finally taking off somewhere  :D

They're back again  >:(

Can you fire warning shots at them somehow without starting a war??

They are going to enter Earth orbit with their fleet - I really don't want them there. Maybe it's time to say f*** it and blow them out of the sky.

This may not be correct, but I think that there is a part of NPR code that makes them investigate new ship contacts, but doesn't filter for allied/friendly vessels. They might be seeing civilian ships being built at Earth and thought that sending their battle fleet was the best way to get a better look. I know this doesn't help solve the problem, but it seems unlikely that they will attack by themselves.

In my previous game the Earth got turned into molten glass by an alien fleet that entered orbit then attacked unprovoked - wiping out my pdc's pretty much instantly. Hence why I'm a bit nervous about this bunch.

As it turns out, they came to Earth then turned around and went again. But I am getting fed up with them I am going to militarize the moon so they can't get away with a first strike if they decide to. I think our relations are doomed as they seem to have planted a colony on Mars (for whatever reason - there is nothing there). But I think having our colonies in one system is going to drive our relationship into the dirt :)

GFFP = Genocide For Fun & Profit. Should be self explanatory. Otherwise I think a search of the forums here will bring up interesting info on it.

Yeah, get em before they get you, this can only end in tears.

Didn't end in tears quite - though it was damned close.

They went hostile, so I decided stupidly to move my missile frigates toward them at Mars, only for my poor frigates (with no anti-missile capability mind you) to get slammed by multiple waves of size 6 missiles. They tried running back to Earth, and for a moment I thought they were going to make it as they were faster than the hostile ships. Unfortunately, more missiles came in and destroyed them.

The aliens then sat at 75-80 million km out, out of range of my own planet based anti-ship missiles, and emptied their entire magazine contents at Earth. This went on for, well, god only knows how long; but my anti-missile pdc's performed admirably, with only a few dozen missiles leaking through to the planet itself - although I did lose a few other ships in orbit too.

I burnt through my entire stockpile of amm's - I had 12,000 to start with, and at the end had 200 left  :o
So I am busy rearming and trying to improve things before they come back - I don't even know where they come from, though I've got scouts out looking.

This is my 7th attempt at a game - and finally I have a war. I went for settings of 100 star systems with 4 NPR's at the start this time - I found a 100 star map was just too big.

Oh, and there's swarm 2 systems away too  ::)

Under VB6 Aurora rules, NPRs will get angry at you if they see your ships in the same system as one of their colonies (unless they view you as allies). . .  and there is no way to stop them from creating colonies wherever they like, including your home system.  Sometimes this means you have the choice of destroying NPR ships in your territory, thus starting a war, or allowing them to establish colonies in your territory, thus the NPR eventually starts a war.  It's a lose-lose situation.

Read Kurt's excellent Corporate AAR in the Aurora Fiction sub-forum to see a nasty war in Sol. Stuff like his game and your experiences is why I never allow anything into Sol.
