Okay, had my first enemy ship contact the other day. Four 1000 tonne ships, max speed 2000km/s. They ended up destroying themselves- after running out of missiles, they rammed my ship. My armor held (miraculously. ) I couldn't even fire weapons.
Based on the enocounter, I designed some new ships:

I then started jumping to unexplored systems, attempting to find the aliens. Hit a binary system, spotted a terrestrial world with methane atmosphere and figured it was a likely spot for a homeworld. Apparently, I was right. . . On approach, I enountered two 7800 tonne ships, and suddenly discovered their max speed was 5128 km/s, and they have tons of missiles. I'm hoping they're system based missile destroyers, because if they're jump-capable, Earth is doomed.
Anyway, I lost horribly- and discovered the only thing that actually even fired was my CIWS. I didn't even spot the thermal signature from incoming missiles. I'm hoping I overlooked something obvious (like my initial design where I left the power plant off the Lion by mistake. ) I'm thinking the best strategy is a medium to large number of smaller ships, since it'll take a lot of research to make something jump capable in the 7k+ tonne range. Of course, with that approach, the casualties will be enormous. Any advice?
Edit- I left off a very tiny resolution sensor on my point defense, didn't I?
