You wait till you go through a jump point and find 6 of them waiting for you - 220 shields, loads of point defence, and missiles by the shed load. I managed to blow away one of them before they took out all my fast laser cruisers and were knocking all my missiles off with no problem.
Strategic retreat time (again). This was with version 1.7 by the way.

PS I'd already destroyed 2 precursors on a previous visit - I think they were breeding faster than I could kill 'em.
