You used to be able to get full design information from using active sensors but then Steve took that out and changed it so that you can only see what they have when they use it near you (or at you) since pinging somebody is generally rude :)

He even went so far as to make the use of Active Sensors in an NPR claimed system as being detrimental to relations.

If they are sending ships to you and then leaving they are probably their own civilian ships (cargo passenger & colony). But if there is no alien colony on the planet then that rules out colony ships.

Other than Espionage from teams on a colony of that race (random what your team actually discovers) the only other ways are from fighting them.  Either capturing the ship or getting the design following interrogation of prisoners.

I am on friendly terms ( for the present ) with an NPR which sends various ships to my Homeworld. Can anyone advise how I can determine the type of vessels these are and their design parameters. My Active and Passive sensors can only give tonnage , Thermal signature , speed etc , nothing on weapons or vessel role in the NPR fleet.
