A brief history of the Dominion's Navy
« on: May 14, 2011, 04:40:42 AM »
Hey all

Just thought I'd post a quick history of my fleet ships in my current 5.42 game. This was with a standard start, selected tech and all tech including module research paid for. Sol gave me some reasonable starting materials but only two scientists so tech development was pretty slow to begin with. Comments and pointers welcome.

The fleet started with a set of survey ships:

Code: [Select]
Explorer class Survey Command Ship    3,750 tons     343 Crew     531.6 BP      TCS 75  TH 300  EM 0
4000 km/s    JR 4-50     Armour 1-21     Shields 0-0     Sensors 8/11/0/0     Damage Control Rating 4     PPV 0
Annual Failure Rate: 28%    IFR: 0.4%    Maint Capacity 1354 MSP    Max Repair 121 MSP    Est Time: 8.42 Years

J4000(4-50) Military Jump Drive     Max Ship Size 4000 tons    Distance 50k km     Squadron Size 4
Ion Engine E8 (5)    Power 60    Fuel Use 80%    Signature 60    Armour 0    Exp 5%
Fuel Capacity 300,000 Litres    Range 180.0 billion km   (520 days at full power)

Active Search Sensor MR88-R100 (1)     GPS 8000     Range 88.0m km    Resolution 100
Thermal Sensor TH1-8 (1)     Sensitivity 8     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  8m km
EM Detection Sensor EM1-11 (1)     Sensitivity 11     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  11m km

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

The jump engine ended up being larger then needed but I wanted to keep the speed to 4k and having researched the engine there was no point spending research on a slightly smaller version. This ship is meant to provide a jump base for the actual survey ships with extra fuel and maint supplies to help keep them out for longer. The first of these entered service in Jan 2025.

Attached to these are three survey ships designed to cover both grav and geo surveys. I had previously had split the geo and grav ships but found I always had a number of ships sat waiting for the other type to complete there work in a system so went for a dual option instead.

Code: [Select]
Surveyor class Survey Ship    2,900 tons     283 Crew     697 BP      TCS 58  TH 240  EM 0
4137 km/s     Armour 1-18     Shields 0-0     Sensors 8/11/2/2     Damage Control Rating 4     PPV 0
Annual Failure Rate: 16%    IFR: 0.2%    Maint Capacity 601 MSP    Max Repair 100 MSP    Est Time: 7.97 Years

Ion Engine E8 (4)    Power 60    Fuel Use 80%    Signature 60    Armour 0    Exp 5%
Fuel Capacity 300,000 Litres    Range 232.7 billion km   (651 days at full power)

Thermal Sensor TH1-8 (1)     Sensitivity 8     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  8m km
EM Detection Sensor EM1-11 (1)     Sensitivity 11     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  11m km
Gravitational Survey Sensors (2)   2 Survey Points Per Hour
Geological Survey Sensors (2)   2 Survey Points Per Hour

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

These ships have served me well although heir very limited passive sensors have mean most first contacts have been very close and usually end up with the ship in question getting destroyed. Three of these together get through both the grav and geo surveys of most systems in good time and being able to leave them out for seven or so years at a time has allowed them to cover a lot of distance. As a simple design the Dominion has continued to build these despite improvements in engines and other tech to save on re-tooling a shipyard. These again entered service in January 2025 and some remain in service at my current date of January 2056.

Having explored the whole of Sol and identified five possible jump points the survey ships begun to explore the wider galaxy only to discover an NPR sat next door to Sol in Barnards Star. The NPR was not immediately hostile and communications initiated but designs were immediately drawn up for a fleet of combat capable craft based around jump ships with good sensors, offensive missile ships and defensive anti missile ships.

Given the jump tech at the time it was decided to limit the size of these first ships to just 6k.

Fleet doctrine is that each TG should be able to make a combat jump with all ships at once and hence these were built in the ratio of 1 jump ship to one AMM to one missile ship and 6 jump ships were built. The ships were slow, had limited salvo size but reasonable armour. Relationships with the NPR continued to grow and these ships were never needed to fight them. The first of these ships was built in 2030 or so and none remain in service today.

These ships were used to try and engage some Precursors that had clearly already been in a fight with both the NPR I had found and a swarm ship. This left a system that was littered with wrecks and something i was keen to exploit ahead of the NPR. Unfortunately the ships were nowhere near up to the task with the very short missile detection range and low volley size which left them unable to break the hostile AMM defence and in turn taking serious damage from incoming missiles. The fleet was able to escape but at the costs of several ships and heavy damage to almost the whole of the fleet. Based on this performance it was decide to scrap this fleet and work on larger hulls once improved jump drive efficiency was completed.

The replacement fleet had a relatively small increase in size but allowed for significant improvements in AMM defence, slightly larger volley size and much better ammo capacity. The fleet was based around the same principal as before with a mix of jump ships, missile attack craft and anti missile defence.

Three fleets of the following were built with the intention that each would be able to operate independently of one another. The fleets comprised:

3 * Jump ships
4 * AMM
8 * Missile

With improved jump tech each fleet could complete a combat jump in one go and gave multiple sensors to ensure the fleet could function with several losses. Sensors and fire controls were designed around enabling both ship and FAC engagements at range.

The first of these ships was launched in 2039 with the last of the complete fleet being completed in 2047 without any change to them. These ships have become the work horse of the fleet having made use of a variety of missiles to deal with both swarm and precursors to reasonable effect. Once built they were also used to engage the local NPR in three systems simultaneously, destroying him in a matter of months.

The attack ships are currently going through extensive refits to make use of the latest tech whilst not loosing the many months spent training and the highly quality of the crews built on numerous engagements. The Mk3 version of the attack ship is currently being completed to allow it work work with the latest light cruiser designs.
