Two-stage missiles and separation range
« on: July 29, 2014, 06:55:15 AM »
I designed missiles with separation range of 150k km.   As it was my first time making this kind os missiles I decided to try them shooting against two waypoints.

When the fighter shooted the missiles I realized the first stage deployed the second shorthly after launch, I thought maybe I misunderstood the separation range description and it means 150k km after shooting and not 150k km from target, but when I selected the option to draw a circle I realized they separated long way before 150k km (see attached image).

Here is the description of the missile:

Code: [Select]
Missile Size: 5 MSP  (0.25 HS)     Warhead: 0    Armour: 0     Manoeuvre Rating: 18
Speed: 5000 km/s    Engine Endurance: 31 minutes   Range: 9.2m km
Cost Per Missile: 6.3797
Second Stage: ASMM-1S1W4 Stinger x4
Second Stage Separation Range: 150 000 km
Overall Endurance: 38 minutes   Overall Range: 13.4m km
Chance to Hit: 1k km/s 90%   3k km/s 18%   5k km/s 18%   10k km/s 9%
Materials Required:    4x Tritanium   2.3797x Gallicite   Fuel x375

Any thoughts of what can be the problem?

It really means 'from target', so you got that right. Are you using 6.4? I just happened to test a two-stage design yesterday in 6.4, and it worked perfectly as it should have.

Ok, then you are using the same as me. I created a new game and SM-rushed the tech to have all it takes, then built a cruiser capable to launch huge two-staged missiles.

This is the MIRV

These are its parts:

Nothing on this is optimized in any way of course.

Here is the Cruiser detail:

Then I set up a shooting range, moved the guy into position and fired:

Separation range should be 150k before impact, and that is what happened:

It all works perfectly, so I am not sure what the problem could be. Small chance, but maybe you had pressed a time interval that was was too large? I guess in that case a mirv would just fraction earlier maybe.. not sure.
Otherwise - Mysterium.

After trying with lower time intervals with no results, I designed another missile with the same description as I posted before but changing the separation range to 2m km and now it works, definitely mysterium. Thanks for your help.
