I've gotten 2 races of squid men so far, one of them is a really low tech hostile and we stomped 2 of their ships flat in 1 turn of constant laser fire from 40cm lasers. The other is a fairly low tech friendly that lost a humongous fleet of ships to 3 enemy vessels armed with nuclear missiles.
