United Nations Space Authority PDC Designs
« on: August 05, 2016, 08:10:34 PM »
Here are my first PDC designs. I made them with the knowledge that my cargo ships all have 4 cargo bays able to carry a total of 20 PDC components and that they will be grouped into twos. I will also be making a dedicated PDC outpost constructor designed to carry 10 PDC components as well as a brigade of construction workers. Note that I intentionally left out passive sensors because they will be provided by deep space tracking sensors.

This is going to be built on Earth mainly to store light craft but also to defend. I admit I went a little nuts...

Tell me whether I should trade out my quad guns for twin of vise-versa.

What do you intend to use these PDCs for? They are really big and will take awhile for construction brigades to set up.

You are also putting small amounts of maintenance on them.  The maintenance module support ships in orbit. There is nothing wrong with putting the module on pdcs as long as that is what you intend.

The guass guns won't work on a planet with an atmosphere.

Your really powerful sensors have a long range but your tracking station will probably be as effective at detecting ships and won't announce the existence of your pdcs when on. I'd dial those active sensors down to about a tenth of their range and use them to light up targets once they are in range of your missles.

Alright, so I tired to build Fort Harper on Earth and it said it would take 400 years. Then I tried to build prefab garrison but it said it would be 40 years. I'm not really sure what size your supposed to make PDCs but it seems the game wants them to be incredibly small.

I was hoping that the gauss guns would work as point defense, but I forgot atmosphere effects it... I suppose you need to use anti-missile missiles to defend a planet. Asteroids will allow uninhibited beam weapon use, right?

From an atmosphere, you can use meson turrets.  You can also develop a smallorbital defense pod.  Just make a ship, put a guass turret and fire control onit and little else. Store it on a pdc with a hangar. whenyou need to defend, launch your orbital platform and it should work.

When I do pdcs, I tend to make them very specialized and as small as possible. Good luck

You must have really low productions if it takes you 40 years to build the Garrison. However, Fort Harper is actually gigantic, so I'd expect it to take a long time (but still, 400 years is a little too long).
Also, I believe that CIWSs do work in atmosphere, if that suits your purposes.

Fort harper is big enough you could shove an orbital habitat on it and build it with factories. Though I don't know if it would still count as a PDC then.
