Eric, can you remove my two old posts? I think that it would avoid some amount of confusion. :(

8th August 2042  Kingdom of Haverty
It has been ten years since we started to explore our universe. After the last world war, King Jonathon Haverty decided that in order for humanity to survive, it would have to spread out amongst the stars. What with the large population losses after the war due to plague and starvation and additional banditry, Earths combined population is a little under 2 billion, of which roughly 252 million are Havertian.

The Kingdom has laid claim to 3 of six solarian jump points and has explored nine systems beyond them. We have also established a jump gate to Washington, which is also the sight of our first extrasolar colony.

We are in competition with two other polities. The Kaldif Imperium(europe) and the Shei Hin Republic(India and most of Asia). The Republic has also started exploring jump points. They have recently assisted us with a large infusion of cash by purchasing our first jump gate construction ship and the components to build a two way jump gate.

8th August 2042  Shei Hin Republic

They have explored out of our solar system into a empty spot of space that we call Philodelphia and they call Karston. They have continued to explore byond Karston and have just recently trumpeted finding a colonizable system. They have asked us for a Luminus class colonzer. They have also recently completed a jump gate into Karston.

The Tatsumaki might have a power issue. I've not crunched any numbers but for a full recharge you are 4 power short. Though the differing ROF might compensate for that.

The shielding is a lot light too. Without knowing what missiles the Kingdom's Spruance class loads, it's harder to tell, but more than 1 ship concentrating fire on one Tatsumaki will be generating internal hits after the first two strikes.

Of course, a Tatsumaki vs. Tatsumaki will be short and brutal. Okay maybe not short, be definitely brutal.

It'll be interesting to see how things work out.

The Tatsumaki has yet to see combat, but was developed to go after the Spruance in earth orbit where the long reload times of the Spruance was the deciding factor. It was believed that the Spruance would not survive to fire a second time, or for that matter, fire the first time  .
The power shortage was noticed, but was neglected in order to get the ships finished. The shields are a new(7 years old) development and no side has yet to see them in combat outside of virtual and virtual won't convince the bean counters.

The Kingdom is currently working on upgrading missile tech and laser recharge rates. The Republic is working on secret fighter tech and misc. techs ranging from terraforming to better capacitors. The imperium is about to finish better construction rates and then will do thier first jump drive.

Sweet. While a cyber and Arch team were set up immediately, it was decided to wait on an Enterprize to finish construction before sending these teams to San Francisco.
I just wish the accssibility rates were higher.

The Tatsumaki has plenty of power, it is in fact enormously overpowered for the weapons it has on board.  This is because they are all charging at the rate of one point of power per weapon per 5 second cycle.  So for 4 weapons you need a reactor with an output of 4.  Instead there are two reactors with a total of 16 points of power.  That is enouch power that when they have designed a matching capaciter 4 system they will have maxed out their energy budget.

The ship class was designed with serious stopping power and as a counter balance to the Republics Tatsumakis. While the first design was finalized in early 2046, the ship will not be built for at least another year while a series of applicable technical upgrades are being researched. Not the least of these items are increased targeting ranges, a finalized design for shielding and more powerful engines.

While this design is finalized as of January 20th 2046, it may not ever go into production. By the time a shipyard is cleared in 9 months, newer more powerful engines may be available.

In addition to new ship designs, the Kingdom is researching larger, longer ranged sensors, improved engines, and will be done researching its first shields in early Feburary.

With only 10 survey units, new systems are being found slowly.

Our incomparable fleet is as follows:

5 Spruance Mk IIIs
8 +1building Bulk Carriers
1 Construction ship(waiting for more components to be made)
10 +2 building Enterpises
2 +1building Texacos
2 Iron Fist Transports
3 Luminus Colonizers

Additional focus has been placed on offensive capability because of the Republics launch of yet more Tatsumaki bringing thier total to seven. Added to this are three new units of an unknown class having been laid down several months ago. After noting the size of the skeletons, we estimate that they will weigh in at around 4500 tons each.

The mission fueler jumpship, Exxon 03, received the transmission from Captain Gunsen of Enterprise 03, Nicknamed "Lucky Lady" by her crew, signifying that all was well and that they were getting ready to enter the unexplored jump point. It was the last heard of her.
Standard mission parameters meant that the Survey ship should have returned within 6 hours. After twelve hours Captain Johanson Leforte had a decision to make. On the other side of the the Denver system were three unexplored jump points, one of which still had a Enterprise class survey ship headed for it, but any light speed message he sent for it would miss it by a little over five minutes. Anther jump point had had another ship disappear through it and not return. On the other side of the jump point at which he was stationed was Sol and the Havertian Battle Fleet.
But. There was always a but.
He didn't know what had happened. The ships jump drive could have failed. She could have materialized inside a star. Not impossible, just improbable. She may even have met an alien species and was ....
Enough speculation. He just didn't have enough information to make a case for , well, anything other then something was amiss. The Admiralty would want more than just a gut feeling, but it would have to do.
He looked across the bridge at the navigator.
"Lieutenant Evans, power the jump drive. Lieutenet Aerves, so inform the crew we jump in 20 minutes. They are to assume stations accordingly"
"Aye, Sir"
"Aye, Sir"

*****

The Admiralty was in a bind. While Battle Fleet was ready and more then willing to go, it would leave Havertian defenses naked to the Republic if they so chose to do anything in the fleets absence. Added to this was that only 3 of the five cruisers were ready to go as the other two were in refit.
A ship would have to be posted in order to watch the jump point, just in case anything unfriendly came through.
Oddly enough, King haverty had a solution. Sell the rights to the Denver system and transfer its information to either the Imperium or the Republic. The question was, do we warn them about the potential unfriendlies on the other side of the jump point? Or not?

August 5th 2047

The conference room had a fantastic view of the Rocky Mountain range. Just 40 miles away was Souhan, the premier tourist lodge for skiing, hiking and pretty much whatever else someone with money wanted to do in winter. His majesty Jonathon Haverty, looked out the windows and thought to himself. Behind him, his staffers laid out carafes of water, snacks and briefing papers. This would be the first time in over a year that a complete meeting of the Cabinet would be held. Fleet Admiral Marco Braley and his aid had already arrived as had the leading representatives of the three major political parties in the Senate. The other members of his cabinet were still filing in and getting themselves seated. He fingered the laser pointer in his pocket and wished he had remembered to bring his AID with him. The phone sized AID had his files on it ranging from phone numbers, addresses, Politico Notes, Todo lists, music, a much played solitaire game, an addictive game called Doom II that his grandson had given him for his 62nd birthday, and even his clothing sizes. He was bored and had been waiting for almost an hour while everybody else arrived. Just one of the things you have to deal with when you arrive early, he thought ruefully.
Behind him a small discreet chime sounded. Ah, he thought, now we can get this ball rolling.
He turned around and walked to he seat while indicating to Robert, his Chief of Staff, to begin.
Robert, a thin graying man in his early fifties, cleared his throat. "Gentleman and ladies. Welcome. We will begin our meeting with a general appraisal of our kingdom. Samantha?"
Samantha Holmes Salzburg, a big boned blond woman in her early forties, spoke," Our treasury is still showing a deficit, as it has been showing for the last ten years. However, our technology and ship sales have given us large infusions of cash and will permit us to continue to operate as is for the next two years at least. our trade convoy from Washington doesn't add significant funds, but every little bit helps. The fine details are in Appendix three of the report."
"Thank you. Gonzales?'
Hayzus Gonzales, the Minster of Industry, spoke quietly yet clearly. "Our choice to build up our industry has paid off. We have nearly %20 more factory complexes then our nearest rival, the Republic. We have built a new research complex to replace the one we sold to the Imperium and have completed the first production run on the Sparrow Mk II's that the Navy has been asking for. The bigger warhead should provide 50% more damage potential then the Mk I. The current project is yet another research facility then we are slated to start working on the Colonial Government Offices. Afterwhich the queue is to continue to produce factory complexes until we reach 300 or so. The navy request for additional jump gate components is just going to have to wait for higher priority items to be finished. Our Mars and our Washington colonies have finished at least one terraforming center and are either working of more factories or mines. Our new colony in Chicago is awaiting mines and construction facilities of its own. My most pressing concern right now is our lack of availability of Bulk Carriers. All are presently in use either transferring minerals in Washington, supporting the jump gate construction effort in Washington at the San Francisco jump point or attached to the colony fleet. The Colony Fleet as is, can not ship enough infrastructure to keep up with colonist drop offs. At least three more ships need to be built and allocated. This is only for immediate needs, not for future expansion. My department has run the numbers and our four shipyards are clearly insufficient for our near and long term needs. I know that we are constructing a new freighter for delivery in mid October, but we need more! At least two more shipyards should be built and dedicated to freighter and construction ships. My report is Appendix Two and provides the necessary graphs and data sources. Thank you." He leans back in his chair with a nod to Robert.
The looks in the room were thoughtful, but focus was on the next Cabinet member, Fleet Admiral Marco Braley.
"Marco?", said Robert.
The Admiral leans back in his chair and locks eyes with his king. "Bad, potentially very bad. The Republic has just finished a class of three ships that they call the New Hope. Intelligence seams to think that they are colony ships. This left their shipyards empty and they filled them with four more Tatsumaki's. They will be completed about the same time as both our larger Portland class cruisers. This will give the Republic an edge in firepower in earth orbit that will be devastating. Our plans have always included having the firepower of our Spruance class missile ships back up our planetary silos in any engagement, but with the numbers that we are now facing, we are looking at the elimination or near destruction of most of our fleet in the first exchange of fire. The only way to prevent this would be to move our Battle Fleet units to the moon or some other near location that would force the Republic to come to us through a missile storm in order to hit us. Our Portland Cruisers will not be available until early January and mid June of next year. However, our first missile collier will launch in mid to late October of this year and will permit us to carry a resupply of missiles just in case we have to have an extended engagement. Our total fleet presence in both military and non military ships is as follows:

Bulk Carriers: 9 +1 building
Construction: 1 (and options for a second one for future expansion.)
Enterprise: 11 (we are assuming that 003 has either been lost with all hands or has been captured.)
Hamden Collier: +1 building
Iron Fist Transport: 2
Luminus Colony ships: 3
Portland Cruisers: +2 building
Spruance Mk IV: 5 (all Spruance class missile cruisers have finished refits as of two months ago)
Texacos: 3

We now have 220 Sparrow MkII's in inventory. They have the same range specs as the Mk I, but carry a 50% larger warhead. It still has only 66% of the damage potential of the PDM missiles, but the PDM's are three times larger as well. Our inventory of Sparrow Mk I's are 238 exclusive of the ones in the Spruance magazines.
"Sire, it is important to note that we have several inhabitable planets with good mineral supplies located already. I would recommend shutting down or at least limiting new exploration until we have these planets up and going. None of our colonies have thier own defenses and our ability to produce missiles is equal to the Imperium and less then half that of the Republic. Further more, the Republic outnumbers us by almost 100 million people. This give them an edge that we may not be able to equal in the long run. We need to coloniz and build up our outsystem ability to do research and even construction capability. I'm sure that Macdonald can fill you in better then I can on our colony potentials right now, but I do agree that additional colonial lift capability be established and perhaps even a second colony fleet be built up. Our outsystem colonies , last I checked summed up to maybe five million colonists. Plus another 6 million or so on Mars. If we want parity or even the ability to stay in shouting distance of the Republic in the long run, we need a larger population and construction base then what we have. I'm sure that Hayzuz's numbers will back me up on this." He glanced at  Hayzuz and saw him nod in affirmation. "As matters stand right now, we cannot go to our colonies aid without leaving earth uncovered. Our 21 missile bases are formadible, but the republic has 18 and the imperium has 8. Considering our diplomatic closeness with the Imperium and his Imperial Majesty Sevrin, I don't forsee any problems coming from him. In fact, He may provide us with a partial solution to our problems in the form of a defensive alliance." he looked over at the plump fifty something man in a meticoulsy sewed three piece suit that reminded one of 1920 America. "What do you think Joseph?"

Joseph Salenwick, the Foreign Minister, rubbed his chin for a moment before speaking. "They, too, are worried about the potential dominance of the Republic. While to the best of our knowledge, the Republic has no offworld colonies, this will change. The Office of Strategic Services has determined that the three ships that have just been finished are colony ships and that they will be paired with a newly produced Triumph jump ship and a fueler has been desiganated to follow them out in 2 months. Further more, we know that they have built at least two jump gates fo far. The first leads out of this system and the other is in the next system. you don't spent the kind of resources that a complete jump gate requires unless you are aiming to go somewhere. Henry , at the OSS, has determined that the new sysem is called Zalaf, but we don't know quite where it is.
It is important to note that while there is some strain between us and the Republic, we are not at war. NOr should we ever be so ,unless something goes terribly wrong. The Republic can't defeat us on the ground, but they can take out our current space capability according to our good Admiral. The immediate solution is obvious. Move our fleet to Mars. Tis will difuse the tension in orbit right now. When our Portlands are finished then the balance is somewhat equaled and can be bettered by making yet more Spruances. Though, if I remember our numbers correctly, we can build Spruances faster then we can build missiles for them.?" He looked at Hayzuz who nodded agreement. "This is the best compromise that we have until the situation changes. It may even be useful to grant the Denver System and everything beyond it to the Imperium in order to secure a full alliance. At that point we may be able to share research and production potentials between us. The Republic will not be able to match that anytime soon."

"The King nodded, pleased that his Cabinet had come to the same conclusions he had while on the flight over here. It was time for dinner and getting down to the nuts and bolts of what was to happen next. Then home to his wife. He hated late night, well more likely early morning  in this case, flights, but she was seeing the doctor to see how her chemotherapy was progressing and he wanted to be there to support her.

But, as of the 8th of August 2042 (i.e. 5 years ago), the populations were almost equal (approx 260 million).

How come the Republic now has a larger population? (I would have thought that the population growth rate would have been the same....)

I don't remember adding population, but thier Governer has a pop growth of +30%. I'm not certain if that would make the difference or not.
The Kingdom has only a rough idea of the Republics pop(which is actually 318.91m, about 60 million more as of now.)
Several million(4.32) Kingdom citizens have been relocated to washington and chicago. The Republic doesn't yet have a single colony.

The HAvertian earth pop wasn't increasing. Even if I increased it in SM mode, it would reset the earth pop back to 252 mil. I have fixed this by deleting the earth pop and readding it. Reassigning the officers was a pain.

The good news is that I can resume the story. The bad news is that I didn't save a copy of the data base and I will have to pick up from where I ended with my experimentation. :)  I think I can work this into the story.

Lt. Montoya Chisabold was watching the far side of the Mississippi river with night binoculars with thermal mode on. 2 weeks ago someone had ambushed a Border Patrol unit and killed all 29 soldiers. This in and of itself was serious, but the fact that the injuries spoke of energy weapon fire and milspec explosives made it into a priority that now involved the 3rd and 4th infantry divisions and every intelligence capability at the Kingdoms disposal in the old eastern USA. Most of the territory east of the Mississippi was not under Kingdom control, though trade agreements and cordial arrangements abounded. Most of the towns and small confederations were hard pressed to field light tanks and any form of old style artillery, never mind railguns or laser weapons. Someone was providing the bandits with modern weapons and that had to be nipped fast. That was why he and his division was here.
Across from him was the town of Chishom. Normally it would be untouchable from here except for artillery as the mighty muddy Mississippi was almost a mile across here, but the antigravity light tanks that he had had assigned to him would carry 6 infantry on top across the river and eleven shuttles would land another 100 troops each as soon as the fields outside of the town were secured.
Intelligence had noted unusual energy readings from the town garrison buildings, similar to what you would get from counter grav vehicles. This was the biggest anomaly, but was definitely the most telling. The town shouldn't have anything better then bio-diesel powered vehicles. Their tech base shouldn't have been able to support more. All the same, he had been told to expect stiff resistance and the potential presence of foreign troops and high tech weapons. This was expected to be a potential slugging match. Not a problem, he smiled. It was time to get into his exoskeleton suite and its chain gun and rocket pack. Finally, a foe worth fighting.

*****
The Senior staff officer finished reading the after action report of the fighting at Chisholm. The bandit lord had armed his troops with KINGDOM weaponry. Internal security was already tracking serial numbers on the weapons. Some idiot had removed only the numbers on the outside of the barrels, not the one inside the trigger mechanism. A breakthrough was expected soon.
In the meantime, the rest of the wild lands east of the Mississippi river would be brought under control. The townships and most of the polities would be invited to join the Kingdom. Those that didn't would be isolated and watched very carefully. The banditry would be stopped by any means necessary, up to and including outright anexation.
He smiled. The Kingdom was finally cleaning up this mess in its backyard. It could only get better from here.

9th August 2051

The Kingdom of Haverty has thrived over the past several years. With the annexation of most of the remaining Eastern Seaboard of the old US, the Kingdom now controls the old North American continent and most of Central America. The government is still spending faster then it is getting from taxation, but was able to sell technology to the Republic for 13 thousand megacred.

The Imperium has announced a first extra solar colony in Austin AIII. It is a terran like world with no need for infrastructure to support the colonists. This has been confirmed separately by our survey fleet assisting the Imperium in scouting the surrounding systems. They have also have just finished a jump gate chain that runs from Sol - Denver - Austin. Unfortunately, Their gate construction ship ran out of fuel on the way back and had to be refueled from its escorting freighters. There was much coughing into hands when the Admiralty heard about this. Then the Charles Greeley Abbot ran out of fuel returning from the Salt Lake system. It took 37 days before an outbound SLEP'd Enterprise found them, dropped off fuel and paced her back to Washington. This has been kept out of the news, naturally.

The Republic is refitting all eleven of its Tatsumaki and have 6 left to go. they have also built a new class of warship that, at 7750 tons, is by far the largest warship that they have ever built. It would appear to be armed with 3 plasma cannon and 2 lasers, likely similar to the refitted Tatsumaki. Top speeds are unknown. In addition to all this, Intelligence reports that they have recently finished a jump drive that can handle 6000 tons. This may be related to the newest ship laid down that looks to be about 6000 tons in size.

The Charles Greeley Abbot is the only new construction, all the others are SLEP'd from the Mk 1 Enterprise. At the current level of shipbuilding tech, these ships take a little over two years to build and each ties up 25% of the shipyards. The Admiralty has decreed that the survey fleet will have one slip devoted to continued expansion and may use one other for refits. This will continue until all the Enterprises are of the MkII variant.

These killers are the largest warships ever built by the kingdom. With direct firepower that is believed to outrange anything the other polities have, heavier shields then the Tatsumaki cruisers, faster then the observed speeds of the Tatsumaki, the two ships should be able to handle the Republic fleet on their own. No Mk 1 was ever built. The building ship is to be assigned to Frontier Fleet when finished in April of 2053

While the Admiralty wanted to add additional engines in order to push the Spruance class above 2000km/s, they were faced with keeping the class at 6000 tons or under. This permits this class to be used to project power beyond the jump gate string. The Adelaide has been assigned to a new formation called frontier fleet. This fleet will be expanded as resources allow. Any new construction will be split between the two fleets.

While more need to be built, it is low on the Priority list.

Current Fleet priorities are in order.
1. Finish military SLEP's (almost done)
2. Start building Frontier Fleet
      5 Spruances
      2 Portlands
      1 Collier
3. Introduce a Fleet Scout design to both fleets. May carry defensive armament. Build 2 Minimum.
4. Additional Exxons(2), Another Const. Ship, Luminus(2+), Bulk Carriers to support Const and luminus(6+)
5. Additional units will follow based off of changing needs.
6. continue Looking at destroyer design for Missile defenses. Just because none of the other known polities have missile ships, doesn't mean that the unknown ones don't. Someone left the ruins in San Francisco.

The King sat in his library, diet coke by his side and a copy of David Weber's, A Short Victorious War, in his lap when Fleet Admiral Marco Braley lightly tapped on the open door to get his attention. "Sire, I thought that you would like to hear the news before it was released to the public." The Admiral had a grin  on his face so it couldn't be too bad.
"What is it Marco? Did the Republic decide to merge with us?"
"No Sire, but nearly as good. We have a reported connection between our two warp chains! Our colonies won't be cut off if Sol gets denied to them."The Republic was almost done with refits on their fleet and were building yet more of their new Sukhoi class cruisers. Added to this the Kingdoms unwillingness to sell the Republic the finished research on the advanced research methodologies that the Kingdom had spent nearly two years on and the fact that the Imperium had traded its new taxation structures for it, and neither had offered anything to the Republic. The Republic had responded by announcing new weapons research and the establishment of a new squadron of fighters. Fighter craft capable of taking off from a planet and loaded with anti-shipping missiles. For the first time the Kingdom felt it no longer had near space superiority or even equivalency in Sol. For the past 6 months, all industrial production has been loaded up and sent out system to either Washington or the newly established colony in New York. Chicago had been left on its own to produce its industrial base with what it had already had.
  "Excellent!,  What is the chain?"
" Its Sol, Washington, San Fransico, Salt Lake, St Paul and then into the other chain through Des Moines, Honolulu, New York, and Sol again. Though Des Moines is still being surveyed for warp points." His face had a wry grin. " You have no idea how surprised Captain Endel was when the DSS Marc Aaronson appeared only 207 thousand kilometers from him."
The king laughed. "I can imagine!Come to dinner Marco. I want to go over the naval expansion plans again."

The Admiralty is complaining bitterly about how slow missile production is.  With 12 Spruances in service, it takes 804 missiles to fill their magazines. Whenever there is a missile upgrade, it takes the better part of three years to refill their magazines. This doesn't include replacements for fired ordinance. This has been "solved" partially by not using the newest missiles for Frontier Fleet. The older MkII has been moved to Mars to fill thier recently completed 5 missile silos. Another missile depot has been established in Washington and New York, but again, these are all older missiles.

Roughly two years ago, the Republic had a terrorist attack at their parliament building that killed several house members and hundreds of civilians. After tracing clues, which have not been shared with us, they attacked the Tsarists. This was a confederation of city states north of the Republic in old Siberia. Intelligence notes that this occurred just after the Tsarists completed a Shipyard. Hmmmm. Fighting took over six months and has ended with Republican control of over sixty additional installations and an estimated 35 to 50 million additional population.

In order to partially counter this, the Imperium has extended its control to the western side of the Black Sea. A distance of almost 550 miles. Unfortunately, the increase in land does not have a corresponding increase in population. The Plagues had hit the economically depressed countries of the area particularly had with a survival rate of one in five. What remains is ruined cities and rife with banditry.

Shortly after the invasion began, the Republican battle fleet departed on "routine training maneuvers" through their jump gate and hasn't come back.

This may be explained by one of our Intelligence operatives in their Logistics Bureau. These ships are reported as no longer operational and were evidently lost to hostile aliens using very advanced missiles that the point defense couldn't lock on to.  The Logistics Bureau has orders to work with the Technology Bureau to develop longer ranged sensors and faster tracking weapons. Interesting. But this calls into doubt our own point defense systems and may require additional research on our part to protect our own fleet. Our intelligence indicated that the Republic has point defense capability that is similar to our own. Not a good sign if we encounter these aliens on our own.

The Imperium has requested our help through our mutual defense pact. Apparently, they lost a survey ship to hostile aliens in Baton Rouge right after their survey fleet transited. We had warned them about this and to leave the system alone until they had built up their military. But, they felt that our ship had suffered a break down of some kind, because if aliens did occupy this system, they would have left it by now. Since half their fleet is currently undergoing refits, they have no way to respond effectively so they are asking for our help. With the Republican Battle Fleet in Sol having only 2 Sukhois and one Tatsumaki, the Admiralty was willing to commit the entirety of our Sol Battle Fleet to this task. At least until they were informed by Logistics command that four of the nine Spruances didn't have the newest Sparrow MkIII's loaded and it would take four months to finish building the MkIII's.  The MkII's and MkIII's mounted the same warhead, but the MkIII has a range of 250,000km and the Mk II had a range of 165,000km. The delay will permit another Portland cruiser to be added to the fleet from new construction.

Our current ship strength is as follows:
Portland: 4 +2 building
Spruance: 12
Hamdon Collier: 1 +1 building
Navajo Scout: 3
Bulk Carrier: 14 +1 building
Construction: 1
Enterprise(old): 1 (headed to Sol for MkII refit)
Enterprise MkII: 13
Luminus:3 +1 building
Texaco(old): headed back to Sol for refit
Texaco MkII: 4
Velvet Glove Transports: 2

Our foray into Baton Rouge was a bust. The aliens did not show themselves or were no longer there. The Imperium is looking into upgrading its fleet with missile ships and would like to by our Sparrows after they have produced their first ship in about a year and a half. They also wish to purchase a Block II Navajo for 3000 mega creds. Half now, half on delivery. The Senate will take up the debate on this. While the King may sell any nonmilitary ship by his own say so, Military or military use ships require Senatorial approval.

The Republic has run into financial troubles and has stopped all Ship construction until they have a positive balance.

Our own navy has run into the problem of actually running out of crew for new ships. Fortunately, the Naval Academy Expansion Program should be complete in three months time.

The Admiralty has taken of much the new tech developed during the last year and developed the following design.

Quote
Iowa class Cruiser    9250 tons     1060 Crew     1199 BP      Signature 185-400
2162 km/s     Armour 1     Shields 30-300     Sensors 15/0/0/0     Damage Control 1-2

Nuclear Pulse Engine EE1 AR-0 (10)    Power 40    Engine Efficiency 1.00    Armour 0    Exp 5%
Fuel Capacity 100,000 Litres    Range 46.7 billion km   (250 days at full power)
Gamma R300/20 Shields (15)   Total Fuel Cost  300 Litres per day

10cm C3 Near Ultraviolet Laser (2)    Range 90,000km     TS: 2162 km/s     Power 3-3     RM 3    ROF 5        3 3 3 2 1 1 1 1 1 0
Fire Control S16 96-6400 (1)    Max Range: 192,000 km   TS: 6400 km/s     95 90 84 79 74 69 64 58 53 48
Pebble Bed Reactor Technology PB-1 AR-0 (1)     Total Power Output 12    Armour 0    Exp 5%

Missile Launcher 06-060 (7)    Missile Size 6    Rate of Fire 60
Missile Fire Control S02-060 (1)    Range: 600k km

High Resolution Thermal Sensor HRT5-15 (1)     Strength 15     Detect Signature 100: 15m km

While the technology priority has been planned out for the next five years, few of these techs are solutions by themselves. Most are precursers to the next missile launcher, beam fire control, next engine tech, a basic fighter, etc.

Explorations continue apace with a emphasis on habitable planets. A survey of Baton Rouge is continuing with Battle Fleet in close attendance. The Imperium's 5 ships have been recalled for refits and will quite likely not return. Negotiations continue for the Kingdom to purchase colony rights to the system.

28th of February, 2064

Within 30 seconds of transitting the worm hole, the Survey ship Signals officer beeped Captian Marshalls ear bug and said, "Captian, I have electronic emissions. They are in an unknown language. Orders Sir?"
Captian Marshal, an older thin looking man,was thunder struck. In the past thirty years, no one from Survey Command had ever heard those words. Ever. Yet the protocals were in place to handle this, so far, unique occurance. "Emissions shutdown, Helm recharge the jump drive. XO, we leave in twenty minutes."
AS information flowed in, it became apparent that the emissions came from the second world out from the sun(an estimated 51 million km away from him), a M4-V spectral class about 418 thousand km across. No signs of ship drive had yet to be detected.
The minutes dragged by as the Enterprise class ship continued to record the mix of signals coming from the planet, then suddenly, "Captian, we have a drive signal moving our way at 1408 km/s. They will be here in a little over tens hours time."
"Understood. Helm, Bring us around and begin countdown for transit in five minutes." He would have to make a beeline to Washington and even that would take just over 57 days. At least Frontier Fleet would be based there and could move forward into Anchorage through its jumpgate. That would prevent the other half of the survey group from being cut off, just in case anything happened. On his way back he would have to detour to the Charston system to tell them to get the heck out and to refuel at the tanker there. This entire chain would be vacated until miliatary units could be brought up to seal this worm hole on the other side.

15th of March 2064

We had begun a survey of the El Paso system as it is directly attached to the San Francisco system that we are currently colonizing. This is standard operating policy as all systems should be explored two systems out from any established colonies. This has been done in most cases except for Boston (starless nexus attached to Washington) and El Paso. Survey Fleet 13 had been assigned to do planetary surveys and was to be joined over the next several months by another three survey vessels from up near Milwaukee. However....

Thirty days after she disappeared into the worm hole she popped back out emitting Flash Priority Four. The Survey vessel had been fired on by hostile aliens. Frontier fleet, stationed in San Francisco, immediately started for the worm hole. It would take it twenty days for it to get there. During this time, the Captain of the Survey Ship, Which was headed at top speed for the Jump Gate into Washington, had time to pass his intelligence along and get it analyzed. The results were frightening. The alien ship had a top speed of 5400 km/s. Needless to say, the technological superiority that that implied was sobering to say the least. What caused the soiled underwear was the four missiles it launched moving at a mere 16000 km/s for 600k km before they detonated. This would give it a better then even chance of crossing our point defense envelope before we could engage it. Our most advanced shipborne weapon had a range of 250k km with a speed of 5000 km/s. Well... Needless to say this caused an absolute panic as it spread throughout the upper echelons of the Fleet.

A variety of priorities were immediately revised.

1.Battle Fleet was to be recalled back from Escort duty in Baton Rouge. Our Imperium allies would have to build their fleet up to defend themselves for the immediate future.
2. Frontier Fleet would receive six of the nine Spruances in Battle Fleet. The remaining three Spruances would be given to the Blockade Fleet in Anchorage.
3.The next series of technological missile advances were currently in the pipeline, but warship speeds needed to be increased drastically. Scientists estimate that such research would take fourteen months or more to develop underlying theories and several months more to build a working model that could be useful for incorporation into our ships.
4. Development into faster missile launcher reload times.
5. Proposals for faster ships that could match pace with this alien were demanded and rather quickly dropped as they simply were not combat viable.
6.Battle Fleets Portland class cruisers would be upgraded to the new Near Ultraviolet Lasers with greatly expanded ranges. As the refits completed they would be rotated out to replace the three in Frontier Fleet.
7.Blockade Fleet would advance down the chain as Jump Gates were built. As both it and Frontier Fleet would practice point blank denial of the worm holes, their range disadvantage should be minimal.

Our Fleet Design changes are as follows:

Our new missiles are as follows:

Sparrow Mk IV ASM   Speed: 8,000 km/s   Endurance: 75 secs    Range: 600k km   Warhead: 6    Size: 6

Zeus Planetary ASM Speed: 8,000 km/s   Endurance: 150 secs   Range: 1200k km   Warhead: 6   Size:12

Only the  Mk IV is currently in production. After the first 600 are produced(another 7 months), we will make 100 Zeus and ship them to New York and Washington. Then additional MkIV's for the rest of the fleets until 1400 are made. Any additional missiles after this are reloads. Additional missile production will have to be setup on either Mars or Washington.

These missiles are not designed to give us parity, but to make it feasible to catch and kill anything coming through the San Fransico - El Paso worm hole.

Our Blockade fleet is now ready fo send through a probe into the alien system in Danwinegar. It will consist of a survey ship, two Spruance class cruisers, and a Navajo Scout. They will attempt peaceful contact. The remainng seven Spruance Cruisers, their Navajo Scout, the two colliers, and the fleet refueler will wait 200,000 Km from the jump point incase something ugly comes through. This fleet is unflinchingly optimised for missile combat, though only the Barcelona has the Sparrow Mk IV.

A new engine tech and several launcher researches have resulted in a new round of ship designs and upgrades.

Title: 15th of March, 2068

15th of March, 2068  7:42 AM

The reentry into Danwinegar was delayed because of a snafu with the survey ship Agrippa's orders. He had been in the nearby system of Azdic surveying for jump points and had only returned because of a 36% fuel level. The now empty Exxon 7 fleet was returning to Washington with an official complaint to Survey Command. It would take them roughly 21 days to reach the Norfolk jump point and they would be able to take the initial contact report with them.

7:42:30
The four ships disappeared through the jump point and emerged on the other side with active sensors on and IFF emitting. They would not emerge in secrecy.
7:42:35
The ships emerge and wait for sensor returns. Almost immediately they detect no fewer then 6 ships 8 km away and 5 more 183k km away.  The nearest estimated at roughly 7100 tons and the further away had mass readings of roughly 8200 tons.
Captain Gregory Blackfisch immediately ordered the 1st  contact message transmitted.
7:43
Sensors indicated shields spinning up on the closest 6 ships and that made Captain Blackfisch nervous. He ordered the Navajo to spin up her shields as well, but for no active targeting sensors to be used. Meanwhile the contact message was about halfway through transmitting, but no return message had yet been detected.
7:43:5
The Smaller fleet has begun to close in on the larger at a rate of  1524 km/s.
Things begun to get really tense on the bridge.
7:43:35
The  smaller fleet is steadily closing in and is now only 133k km away. There is still no response to the first contact hails. Further more, no radio emissions from them have been detected at all. This was getting too strange.
"Nav, are the jump drives recharged?"
"Yes, Captain. The Moscow needs to reposition itself in our jump shadow."
   "Make it so."
7:43:40
The Spruance class cruiser begins to move only 3 km to get within the survey ships jump shadow so when the Agrippa jumped, the Moscow wouldn't be left behind.
7:43:45
All six alien ships open up on our fleet with three energy torpedoes launched from each ship at a mere 8 thousand km. Most hit. The only warning was the sudden wail of laser ranging detectors seconds before most of the torpedoes smash into their targets. While many systems are damaged, few are actually destroyed. All the ships lose at least an engine and the Survey ship loses its geo survey unit as well as absorbing many hits on its jump drive. We are pleasantly surprised at our ships survivability.
7:43:50
Our ships return fire with two of the now enemy ships targeted with 5 missiles each and the Spruance lasers are all targeted on a third. The Navajo  targets a 4th ship and manages to hit her both times. Our missiles are much less impressive. Only two of each salvo hits their targets. While none of the enemy ships explode, two of them suddenly lose their lidar emissions and three of the four have substantially reduced drive fields.
Meanwhile, the Moscow has finished its movement and Captain Blackfisch orders the jump.
7:43:55
Our ships leave normal space and pop back into the Rochester system with a great sigh of relief.

Intelligence Summary.
The aliens in  Danwinegar have proven to be hostile. Intelligence of the ships follow:

7100 ton, Speed: ? Never moved, Weapons: 3 thermal torpedoes, Shields: present ? top strength unknown(shields continued to increase throughout combat on the two ships that were not fired upon.), Six units sighted. At least 2 sustained significant battle damage.

8200 ton, Speed 1524, Weapons: unknown, Shields: present ? top strength unknown(shields continued to increase throughout combat.), 5 units sighted. None sustained damage.

Ability to repair and build ships is unknown. No apparent missile tech has been observed, but our Navajo did take a single laser hit on its shield that did not penetrate. The powered shield took a 30% loss.

Ruins have been discovered on Petrina-A IV much like those found in San Francisco. The Teams still in San Francisco will be moved here. Hopefully, these ruins will provide real clues as to who the aliens were and why their cities died under asteroidal bombardment.

Furthermore, the ships damaged in Danwinegar have just finished their repairs. The Navajo and the Survey ship will be updated to the latest designs and the two Spruance class ships will be reloaded with Sparrow Mk IV's and returned to the Blockade Fleet. The usefulness of the lasers on the Spruances were demonstrated rather handily and the fact that they have such limited magazine capability means that there is no room for missile killing missiles. There also is no finalized design for a dedicated fleet anti-missile ship. This means that removing the lasers from the Spruances will minimize even further their ability to defend against missile fire.

On the plus side, a previously undetected warp point to Sol has been found by our eastern survey Fleet. Odd that it should originate in Petrina as well. This has caused some stir as to whether or not this warp point was just missed in the original Sol gravidic survey or if it is a warp point that simply did not exist before. This has dire defense implications.
(Authors note: the appearance of this warp point came as a surprise to me as I do not use the Suspected dormant jump point check box on the galactic map or anywhere else. Steve, any ideas?)

The newest block Spruance will look like this:

As can be readily seen, the defenses are just not up to stopping a 16000km/s missile. Furthermore, there is no significant magazine capacity for an extended missile exchange. It will have to kill its target quickly or not at all. The Admiralty and King Haverty conclude that the Fleet will just have to post a defensive fleet at the worm hole and hope that the aliens in El Paso come to us.

Our construction ship design has been changed and refits have begun.

On a side note, the Imperium has purchased 50 of our fighter factories for use when their Bengal fighter is finished being researched. They have also purchased 524 Sparrow II missiles for their 2nd design which is meant to be a bomber unit. There after they intend to research the tech required for hanger bays on board ships.

The Republic requested to purchase 1000 tons of Gallicite, but ended up only purchasing 500 tons. We will leave the rest of it on the table, so to speak, if the Imperium needs it. Our own industrial needs are eating our supply on earth very quickly. This is threatening because the Gallicite has been mined out. Fortunately for us and the Imperium, Mars has 280 thousand tons left to be mined and the Sol system has rich sources of it left untapped in the asteroid belt and on several of the moons of the outer planets.

Our King and his chief advisor are now getting older. His majesty is now 73 and Fleet Admiral Marco Braley is now 83 and in poor health. The Kings successor is his eldest daughter, Amelia Ellen Haverty, who is now one of three Senators from the Washington system. Marco's successor is still up in the air, but will likely come from an active fleet duty captain. The Kings oldest child is actually Jonathon Diggory Haverty, who has deliberately taken himself out of the succession. He is enjoying life as a Professor of Biology at the rebuilt San Antonio University System.

More to follow!

17th of June, 2071

The Queen died from cancer late last night. Her Majesties Funeral Mass will be at Saint Johns Cathedral on the 19th. Senator Amelia Haverty has been recalled from Washington to act in the official capacity as Heir Apparent to the Cabinet. The King is taken with grief and has steadily been isolating himself from day to day Governmental affairs.

The new Fleet jump ship design is as follows:

Quote
Rapier JCA class Jump Cruiser    11000 tons     1030 Crew     2647 BP      Signature 220-720
3272 km/s    JR 4-200     Armour 1     Shields 40-300     Sensors 15/0/0/0     Damage Control 1-2

Fuel Capacity 100,000 Litres    Range 49.1 billion km   (173 days at full power)
Gamma R300/20 Shields (20)   Total Fuel Cost  400 Litres per day

Missile Launcher 06-045 (2)    Missile Size 6    Rate of Fire 45
Missile Fire Control S02-060 (1)    Range: 600k km

High Resolution Thermal Sensor HRT5-15 (1)     Strength 15     Detect Signature 100: 15m km

With a construction time of 3.78 years, the Admiralty shouldn't be looking for very many to be produced.

The Hawks in the Senate are looking for an immediate way to attack the aliens in  Danwinegar.  They propose scraping together five jump ships and using them to take 15 warships into Danwinegar at once. However, these ships are currently limited to Enterprises, Hamdon Colliers, and Texaco Fueler ships. All of which are unshielded and cannot defend themselves even with shields. Furthermore, our ships that can be transported this way are only the Spruances and Navajo scout ships.
In order to make up the necessary numbers we will have to raid Frontier Fleet and replace their snagged units with Iowas and refitted Portlands.

Back in early 2069 we finished our geo survey of Petrina and found scattered ruins on both the third and the fourth planet. An Archeological and cybernetics team was dispatched a month later and colonists two months after that. Early this year 15 jump gate components were found and the technology for Armored Fuel Bunkers was extracted from the remains of alien machines. We will extend our Jump Gate network to the Milwaukee system from the Petrina system, a total of four jumps.
The Republic has begun building two new designs. One is 7100 tons and the other is 14400 tons. What they are we don't yet know, but intelligence does not believe that they are freighters, but the designs have large empty spaces in them. They may be the finalized carrier designs that the Republic has been talking about for years.

Our last reinforcements have reached the Blockade Fleet. Our assault will begin on the 12th of January, 2073. It will take that long for the dedicated survey ship in Azdic to return.

We have just recently finished researching Ceramic Composite Armor and have redesigned the following ships. It costs too much to upgrade the warships so from this point on they will be new construction. The cost to upgrade the Enterprises survey ships is still only about half the cost of a new one so their refits will continue.

Title: Danwinegar JP battle
Post by: Haegan2005 on December 29, 2007, 02:43:31 PM
12th of  January, 2073

Three assault groups form before the jump point to  Danwinegar. The two Hamdon colliers will each take through 3 Spruances and the Exxon fueler will take through two more Spruances and the Navajo fleet scout.

At exactly 10:00PM the attack commences, but starts off badly. Only the colliers jump. The Exxon jump drive reports a short circuit and refuses to engage. The crew frantically races to find the previously undetected fault.

On the other side, Assault 2 appears 49k from the jump point and Assault 3 appears 5k from the JP. The colliers immediately run for the JP, but only one makes it before the aliens and Kingdom fleets open fire. No fewer then 6 thermal torpedoes hit the collier, destroying multiple engines, a fuel tank and several hits against the jump drive. Ten seconds later she disappears through the JP.
Meanwhile, the trailing alien force of eight ships has shown their colors. Forty missiles in  8 salvoes lash out at 3000km/s at Assault 2.  Our reply is feeble in comparison. Each force launches only fifteen missiles spread across multiple targets. However, our two fleets are moving away from the JP in order to open the range. The alien force directly on the JP is composed of no fewer then ten of their thermal torpedo armed cruisers. We find out that each of then have two lasers as well. This information is carried into Rochester by the second fleeing collier. The Blockade Fleet, composed of all three Spruance Mk VI's currently in the Kingdom fleet, is ordered to follow Assault 1 through the JP. Meanwhile, the Enterprise survey ship has moved up to replace the Exxon. Its jump drive was still working as of 2 days ago when she jumped into this system. It should still work now. The situation looked grim as our fleet on the other side was outnumbers three to one. As our ships did not have shields and theirs did, it just put us at further disadvantage in a point blank exchange of fire. Assault 3 took damage spread out over mainly engines and an occasional crew quarters.
Our Sparrow ASM were 2000km/s faster and thus struck first blood. The alien cruisers on the JP shot down 2 missiles and suffered only 5 hits spread across 3 ships from the remaining missiles. Mostly shields were knocked down and one ship showed a loss in engine power.
Meanwhile, the massive missile strike aimed at Assault 2 is in range of the PD of both assault forces. Twelve lasers fire as one and kill 9 missiles. Captain Erastor, in charge of Assault 2 , estimates that the alien missiles will take another ten to fifteen seconds to catch his ships. More then enough time to whittle them down some more. 10 more missiles are killed before they are amongst his ships. The Barcelona takes three hits and the Augusta takes two. All the other missiles miss. The enemy missiles spend their energy on mainly engines, one of the Barcelona's two magazines and two of her launchers.
Our fleets continue to try to open the range, but the enemy cruisers follow us off of the JP at 1401 km/s. With only a 265 km/s speed advantage it was going to take a while to open the distance enough to get out of their range. Rear Admiral Aretha Kurz, commander of  Assault 3 and in control of the overall assault, orders both assault fleets to fire on the enemy thermal cruisers as they pose the most dire threat. The enemy missile cruisers are firing slow missiles that are extremely vulnerable to PD.
Twenty five seconds after the first thermal torpedo volley, another one lashes out at Assault 3. Out of 24 fired, only seven hit, none doing critical damage.
Finally, Assault 1 appears at the JP. The Enterprise immediately jumps back out. Near point blank missile launches destroys two enemy cruisers outright. Assault 1 immediately heads away from the JP in order to open the range.
The aliens ignore the newcomers to fire again, but this time only at the Atlanta. She losses three missile launchers, both lasers, and her magazines. Our reply is scattered across the pursuing cruisers. None of the missile volleys are able to hit with more then two missiles each and mostly it just knocks down shields and inflicts minor internal damage. Two of the enemy cruisers do register a reduction in speed.
Ten seconds later, the remaining warships in Rochester appear at the JP in defiance to orders. They were to make sure that if the attack had failed the JP would be blocked on the other side. All three Spruances fire at the cruisers pursuing Assault 3. It takes 10 seconds for the missiles to reach the cruisers. Of the fifteen missiles, only 5 hit. Four on one cruiser and one on another. Incredibly, the enemy cruiser survives. Her Engines have obviously taken dreadful damage as she is only moving at 627 Km/s and her speed is falling. She may have had her fuel destroyed as well. The other cruiser has the last of the shields stripped away and may have taken internal damage.

At this point, the newly arrived Assault 1 is pacing itself to be 80,000 km away from the action, but still well within missile distance. All units are given orders to focus on the enemies thermal torpedo cruisers as these ships have by far done the most damage.
While the cruisers are recharging, most of the Spruance are able to launch another volley. More then half the missiles miss and another four are killed by enemy PD. That left some ten hits spread out over seven targets. After the series of rapid explosions, several of the cruisers have reduced shields and three more are now starting to trail behind the main formation. Thermal torpedoes lance out from all the cruisers except one of the trailing ones that had just been hit. While most miss, another Spruance (the Barcelona) takes yet more hits taking out her engineering section, a crew quarters, her thermal sensors, and her remaining magazine. She is out of the fight and breaks off by moving away at a 45 degree angle. At about this point the Blockade Fleet opens up on the trailing fleet of enemy missile cruisers. Two of the Blockade Fleets three Spruances carry the Sparrow Mk IV. With a speed of 8,000 km/s the missiles prove to be impossible for the enemies PD to kill. The much slower Mk III's that are trailing behind lose two to PD and one misses. As the missiles had been spread amongst three different missile cruisers, they did not achieve any kills. Though the two which had been hit by the Mk IV's dropped in speed rather noticeably and we stopped receiving missile fire control radars from one of them. The enemies missile cruisers are tougher then we imagined.
Rear Admiral Aretha Kurz is furious. The Blockade Fleet had disobeyed his orders by firing on the enemy missile cruisers instead of the ships pounding Assault 2. He contacts Captain Michaelson on the Basra and orders him to stand down and to cede the bridge to his XO.  Captain Michaelson told him that Blockade Fleet was not under the Rear Admirals command per the High Admirals orders and would the Rear Admiral focus on the more important matters going on here. Like the enemy ships. This does not go down well. Without another word the Rear Admiral flicks off his transmission and proceeds to fight without including the Blockade Fleet in his orders.

The ships of all the Assault units start to head to one point in space to merge their individual units into one mass force that could coordinate its targets and its massed point defense much easier. The enemy thermal cruisers only get off one more massed thermal torpedo volley before concentrated missile volleys start turning them into rapidly spinning collections of debris and life pods. Shortly thereafter the remaining enemy ships ran for their home world. Most don't make it more then 80,000 km. Six minutes and 30 seconds after the beginning of the JP assault, the jump point is clear of enemy warships and a quick assessment of damages and missile stockpiles is done.

486 crewmen killed of which 67 were from the Hamdon collier which was pounded on when it was trying to make its escape.

Spruance 9, 11, and the Barcelona all took significant damage. Enough to render them back up escorts, maybe. The Barcelona has three missile launchers, but no missile fire control and her PD lasers have been wiped away. She is essentially defenseless as her DC parties struggle to repair what they can.

The Hamdon collier lost 2 of her four magazines and three of her six engines. The loss of the Sparrow MkIII's is dire as the other collier carries only Sparrow MkII's. The Mk III's had a range of 250k km  and the Mk II had a range of 165k km.

The Blockade Fleet has left 27 and 33 Mk IV's and 22 Mk III's.

The Assualt Fleet had a remaining total of 117 Mk III's out of 536 originally loaded.

The damaged collier has 67 Mk III' s remaining and the other collier carries 133 MK II's.

Fortunately, the two of the three damaged Spruances could have their missiles pulled and used to fill the remaining 5 ships, but that still required  335 missiles. We could come close at 317 missiles when we added in all the missiles from the colliers..
This was not thought out very well, thought the Rear Admiral. He could also pulled missiles from the Blockade Fleet, but the fleet would be left with only 3 to four salvos each of the Mk IV's.
The plan had called for them to move on the planet immediately after taking the JP. The severely deplete state of the Assault Fleets munitions made this difficult. It would take almost 6 months for the undamaged collier to make a round trip to Earth and back.  Never mind the damaged collier. There was no shortage of fuel. The Exxon Fleet still had its fuel reserves almost at full. This still left him with several options if he was willing to spend the fuel. Okay. Think it through. We need to know the defenses that the planet has. Load up the Spruances with a  mix of 2's and 3's. We can use the Mk II's for missile defense. This will permit us to have multiple launches against incoming attacks and our PD has proven to be very effective. Alright, we'll doit.
The damaged Spruances would be grouped together with the damaged collier and the undamaged collier would be sent ahead with the information gained from the battle. He would launch a series of probes to see what the aliens had left. The Blockade Fleet would stay and deny the JP to the aliens.

12 th of January, 2073

Two hours into the probe a group of ships were detected moving at 1190km/s directly towards the JP. They were roughly 18 million km away. All five contacts were 5250 ton ships. Hardly large enough to be serious threats. But then again, with none of his ships maxed out on missiles and no source of resupply readily available, any engagement could prevent him from achieving an effective probe of the planets defenses. Just as he was making his decision the small alien fleet angled off to the right about thirty degrees'. They would not pass by close enough to force an engagement. The only question now was, were they a threat to the Blockade Fleet? He had not touched their missiles so they would have roughly five salvos each. That would be more then enough.
His own fleet of 5 Spruances and a Navajo were not really out to take the alien planet. He was going see what its defenses were and then go from there. Considering the battle at the JP, the aliens likely had formidable defenses around their world. At least he could force them to spend ordinance on his ships. Every missile they shot would not be available when reinforcements arrived. More alarming was the potential that this was but a colony. Unlikely, but possible. The first contact had seen eleven alien warships and the attack on the JP had seen eighteen warships. Granted, it had taken almost five years to gather the forces to take the jump point. Well, to be fair, it had taken four years to decide to do something about it and another year to move the reinforcements to Rochester.

3 hours later the five ships disappeared off the edge of the sensors. The Blockade Fleet had been warned.
Roughly 2 hours later, the alien planet was now at 1.9 million km and shipboard sensors picked up a fleet in orbit at the alien planet. There were 8 ships of roughly 2850 tons each. This was probably all of a single class and if they were warships, well, it could get dicey.

End part one.

(authors note, much of this is being rebuilt from notes. I can't always get time to play and to write :( , but I do what I can. This is both my longest running campaign and the most interesting of them all. The Kingdom is about to face the reality of logistics and what happens when you have a large fleet and few shipyards for refits. I find that I am quickly getting a low tech and a high tech battle fleet. Hmm, wonder where those system defense ships will come from?)

Five more minutes pass by at an agonizing crawl. The Probe Fleet is now 999k km away from the planet when suddenly the alien fleet leaves orbit directly away from Probe Fleet at 2192 km/s. Sighs of relief echo around the bridge.
30 seconds later,  8  alien missiles suddenly appear on the master plot. The computer marks them as detected at 849k km from the task force. The planet is  still about 990k km away with the missiles detected 141k km from the planet..
One of the Spruances with the Mk II loaded deliberately targets the enemy salvo with the intent to thin the enemy salve before the inner PD engaged it. However the alien salvo burns out at 290k km. from the planet. That gives us plenty of room to close. One  concern is that the alien missiles were moving at 5000km/s. This is as fast as our own missiles and will give our PD difficulties.
The Admiral orders the task force to close to within 300k km.
7 minutes later we have arrived just 10k km outside of their perceived maximum range. The MkIV has a range of 600k km but there are only 60 total insystem and they are eleven hours away. The MkIII has a range of 250k which puts us within their range, but if we wish to attack the planet then we will have to close to within range of their planetary missiles. So be it.
Thirty seconds later at 237k km distance the aliens open fire again. So do we, but we aim at only detected military targets.
25 seconds into flight the Mk II's intercept and kill only one enemy missile. Lots of sweat starts to appear as 7 enemy missiles still bear down on the fleet at 5000km/s.
Five seconds later, another enemy salvo of 8 is launched.
five seconds later, the nearest alien missiles are now 37 k away and the task forces PD blaze forth and kill only four more missiles. Three survive. The PD lasers require ten seconds to recharge. The missiles will hit before then. The Admiral snugs his body webbing and breathes a silent prayer.
Five seconds later three missiles slash into the midst of the fleet and one hits Spruance  012, killing 2 engines.

Twenty seconds later, 20 MkIII's smash into the planet. Just as yet another alien salvo is launched. It will take time to evaluate the damage to the planetary facilities.
Ten seconds later, our side launches. 20 MkII head towards the planet and five MkII missiles lock onto the enemy salvo. All ten PD lasers miss. Whatever ship is being aimed at is in trouble unless most miss.
Five seconds later, the PD missiles all miss, Spruance 012 is hit by 5 of the 8 enemy missiles. She loses all her remaining 3 engines, a magazine, 4 of 5 of her missile launchers, 2 crew quarters, fire control for lasers, 2 engineering sections and damage control. A total of 238 crew lay dead, scattered throughout the ship in compartments turned into abattoirs by flying debris and secondary explosions.

End part two.
Title: part 3
Post by: Haegan2005 on January 14, 2008, 11:06:56 PM
The Spruance 012 captain orders abandon ship.
Yet another flight of alien missiles launch from the planet. The Fleets PD engage the previous flight of eight missiles and kill 2 of them. The remaining six missiles flash into the fleet before the PD recycles. Two hit the badly injured Spruance and blow her to little pieces. The other four slash through the expanding ball of plasma and continue on their way into the void. Fortunately, most of the crew made it off.

Twenty seconds later fifteen Sparrows impact the planet again. Seconds pass and the tactical officer announces that the aliens are late firing their next salvo and may not have anymore launchers.  Orders are given to target Ship yards. There was, however, one more salvo en route to attack his fleet. The seconds tick by and the fleet waits to see who the target would be. With the destruction of Spruance 012, the Probe fleets PD was thinned out by two lasers and the fleet was even more vulnerable. The Admiral double checked the tactical comp and breathed a partial sigh of relief. The PD would be able to engage the salvo twice. That would give his ships a good chance to seriously thin out the salvo before it struck.
The bridge was quiet in a way that spoke of everyone holding their breathes as the missile salvo entered the PD range. The PD blazed forth and killed four of the missiles. An unprecedented performance as only eight lasers were active. Spruance 013 had had a breakdown in it fire control and its lasers were out of the battle. Ten agonizing seconds pass by as the PD recharged and Spruance 015 finished cycling its Mk II's to launch for PD. At literally the last second the PD finished charging and shot and the Spruance fired its missiles. The Sparrow Mk II's kill a single missile and the PD lasers then kill the remaining 3 missiles.

Two full 20 missile salvos are launched at the shipyards, knowing that it would be overkill. Tempers are still high about the loss of the Spruance. As it turns out a third salvo of fifteen is launched to finish killing the last shipyard.

Communication is achieved ten days afterwards. They call themselves the Hosbero Commonwealth and were large toothed reptiles with insect like eyes.

The two troop transports arrive two months later with a total of 6 armored divisions and another Survey ship which promptly begins planetary surveys.
The Commonwealth has continued to proceed on its construction agenda during negotiations. Orbital surveillance shows that they have recently repaired several missile sites and were loading them under the cover of darkness. As the intelligence officer noted, darkness was not effective when your opponent could see in the dark. The negotiations went downhill rapidly after that. The Admiral had hoped to not use his troops, but he was left with little choice. The six divisions were dropped on the Capital and savage fighting ensued. With the loss of but one infantry division to our four armored divisions over fifteen days, our savaged formations withdrew to a perimeter in the hills north of the city. The aliens, sensing that they were winning, attacked all out and were bled white in a series of engagements lasting a month. With insufficient  Kingdom troops to hold even a small part of the continent a bargain was struck and the Commonwealth surrendered. Its current leaders would never be able to hold government posts again, but the war was over.

3rd of June 2076

Our Ground Troops have had six additional divisions landed on Danwinegar to back up the two armored divisions that remained after the ugly fighting. The planet has a population of 227 million and is by far our largest out system population. The next largest is Washington A-III at 24.41 million. Granted that they aren't human, but they have expressed little interest in their own remaining government.  In order to ensure that this is their will, we will hold a referendum. The referendum will be overseen by a relatively neutral third party. The Imperium will do so for our ion engine tech, of course. As they are close allies and we have a vested interest in their being able to back us up, the trade has been agreed.

A general update on the state of the Kingdom.
We have explored 137 systems with roughly 40 fully explored.
We have ten colonies spread over 7 systems totaling 929 million people.
The Kingdom has pushed hard to expand our shipyards. Earth has nine, Mars has one, Danwinegar has rebuilt one, and Washington A-III is in the process of building one. Danwinegar will build two more after it finishes its CF production run of 30 CF.
Danwinegar's RL have been used to do secondary research items. 14 RL can only do secondary tech because the main lines are simply too expensive to be researched in a reasonable amount of time. We will be building additional RL on this planet as it has some 50 million population not doing anything worthwhile. It will give them something to do.
Our Earth mineral stockpiles are dropping fast due to rapid construction of facilities and ships. Even worse, we have run out of Neutronium, Boronide, Mercassium, and Gallicite. We will have to expand our automated mining capability to in excess of 400 additional mines to keep up with our construction on earth alone. And, of course, we are using Duranium like there is no tomorrow. We have been having to ship this in from our forty mines on Venus and the mining moon in Washington, but Washington A-II needs the Duranium as well. Washington will have to be much more extensively developed for all our sakes.  This lack of Duranium will drastically slow down our industrial expansion. We will continue to be able to go full bore for another 20 days before we use up our reserves on Mars, Earth and in thirty  more days, Washington A-III. Our treasury has been suffering as well. From a high of 12,000 megacreds as of three years ago, we have 4484 left with a drop of roughly 461 a month.

Our fleet has only increased by a slight margin.

A note about the other polities:

The Imperium has two extra solar colonies, another one on Mars and their capital, Earth with a combined population of  497 million. They have recently added a fourth shipyard in late 2075 and are currently building another. Their Mars colony is working on expanding their RL from 6 to 8 and this will take another year and a half. Their Fleet has decided to focus  on fighter technology and carriers. They simply cannot research fast enough to keep up with us and they lack the construction and population base to compete as well. Therefor they have decided to dedicate themselves to small easily replaceable fighting platforms called fighters and have built 3 carriers for them so far.

The Republic has one extra solar colony in the Zalaf system two jumps from Sol, but they are looking for additional planets that are easily colonized.  They too have decided to focus on fighter tech. They have four carriers built and three more building. This will give them a total of 5 escort carriers and two fleet carriers. A potentially formidable force indeed. A more capable fire control will be researched to counter this threat as soon as possible.
It is interesting to note that the Republic has offered to buy 20 JP gate components for an ?extension? project with an option for 20 more at 1000Mega credits each. It is surprising to note that in another month they will be able to buy the first contract outright and have a little bit left over. Some dark eyes have been cast at our Minister of the Treasury. She was not amused.

Three assault groups form before the jump point to  Danwinegar. The two Hamdon colliers will each take through 3 Spruances and the Exxon fueler will take through two more Spruances and the Navajo fleet scout.

I am just catching up with the write-up. Sounds like an chaotic (but fun) fight.

It was. Nobody jumped into supporting range of each other. Its one of the reasons Haverty took as many casualties as they did. The alien missile ships were only effective with their 1st salvo. The other salvoes had alot of tracking time and several fleets able to target them.

3rd of February, 2078

An update on the status of the Kingdom.

The worm hole chains have extended to the point to where several of our inhabited systems sit next to or very near to unsurveyed systems. Included amongst these systems are Danwinegar, New York, and San Fransico. OUr survey assets are being moved to extend the surveyed areas out to three transits minimum. But this will take a while. We have one Enterprise MkII being refitted to the latest design and another MkIV being built, but these ships willnot be available until the 23rd of july 2078 and the 13th of june 2078 respectively.
Our Frontier Fleet and Battle Fleet now consist of modernized ships, but the newly designated Danwinegar Fleet is still mostly made up of its original ships.

Frontier Fleet(SAn Fransico): Fleet speed: 3000
Portland Mk V: 4
Iowa MkIII: 4
Portland Mk IV: 2
Spruance MkVII: 2
Navajo Mk IV: 1

Battle Fleet(Sol):  Fleet speed: 3000
Rapier JCA: 3
Portland Mk V: 1
Iowa Mk III: 1
Spruance Mk VII: 5
Navajo Mk IV: 2

Danwinegar Fleet: Fleet Speed: 1666 (Previously designated Assault Fleet)
Spruance Mk VI: 3
Spruance Mk V: 4
Navajo Mk III: 1
This fleet is slowed down by the Spruance Mk V's.

IN addition to this we have in Sol orbit either waiting to be refitted or refitting:

Portland MkIII: 3 (waiting for refits)
Iowa MkII: (1 refitting)
Texaco MkII: (waiting for refit)
Spruance MkV: 6 (1 is refitting)
Velvet glove Transports: 2 (waiting for refit)

Our Current Shipyard status is a mixed bag.
Sol:
Atmospheric Terraformer: 2 (dueApril 4th and june 7th of 2078)
Enterprise MkIV: 1 (due june 13th of 2078)
Iowa MkIII: 1  (due September 5th 2078)
Texaco MkIII: 2 (due Feb 5th and April 3rd 2078)
All others are refitting.
Mars:
Iowa MkIII: 1(delayed for 6 months because of duranium shortages, due Feb. 10th 2079)
Danwinegar:
Velvet Fist MkII: 1 (due July 29th 2078) This rebuilt yard was used to repair the less damaged ships of the Assualt Fleet.

The 15 captured research labs on Danwinegar are being used to research low cost technologies. We are in the midst of expanding their number of labs and looking at making this a major shipyard center. We will have to add to its single shipyard in order to do this. In the meantime we will focus on CF, mines, and RL.
Both the Imperium and the Republic have made major advances in engine tech and are currently undergoing refits. Our own scientists on Earth are researching the next level of suspected engine tech above ion engines.

More shortly.

Our labs on Danwinegar have recently developed an interesting piece of technology called a tractor beam. This tech was focused upon because of the highly likely event of one of our ships suffering total engine or fuel bunker damage. Without the ability to move the ship to a shipyard, it would have to be left there at the mercy of who ever came by. If we were forced to retreat it would have to be destroyed and its future usefullness lost.

The following design has been drawn up:

Quote
South Carolina Tug class Tug    4150 tons     370 Crew     620 BP      Signature 83-600
7228 km/s     Armour 1     Shields 0-0     Sensors 15/0/0/0     Damage Control 0-0
Tractor Beam     Replacement Parts 5

Ion Engine EE0.8 AR-0 (10)    Power 60    Engine Efficiency 0.80    Armour 0    Exp 5%
Fuel Capacity 100,000 Litres    Range 130.1 billion km   (208 days at full power)

High Resolution Thermal Sensor HRT5-15 (1)     Strength 15     Detect Signature 100: 15m km

It will be built at the first available shipyard complex. In the meantime our refits will comtinue.

As soon as the Magneto-Plasma drive has been researched, our fleet staff has proposed building a new generation of fast warships and to use the current fleet as system defense fleets.

25th of July, 2081

Our fleet has just finished its modernization program for most of its ships except for those based in Danwinegar.  Just in time for the next development in engine power to be developed. Rather then go through yet another SLEP for 50 combat ships, a new battle fleet will be built with the new technologies coming out of the research labs. This includes the new engines, two new missiles and a new design to go with them.

We are continuing to survey warp chains leading away from our colonized systems, but this takes time. Our resources have been switched from building our naval might to modernizing our various units so that they have roughly the same fleet speed. Once the last of the Spruance Mk V's are upgraded our fleet speeds will be a universal 3000 instead of 1666. It is to be noted that this speed is the slowest of the modern units, the Spruance Mk VII.

Our tactical officers are impressed by the new missile designs as they are twice as fast as the previous models.
The Kingdom is continuing to move population to the colonies. In particular, New York and San Fransico. The two colonies in Petrina will be left alone for now, but they will be getting periodic population and infrastructure infusions. Much debate has been done about stationing fleet units in Petrina until the colonies have had time to build missile defenses. As of right now, the colonies do not have defenses of any kind except for Earths Battle Fleet which can be summoned through the jump gate system. Quite likely too late to do anything other then have revenge though.

The black 5200 ton survey ship appeared in the jump point and listened as per standard percedure. After five minutes its captian prepared to give the order to proceed to the next jump point when the Commander of Sensors Hissedyowled in urgency. Its four mandables clacking together at the end to add even more emphasis. The 350 pound slimy skinned captian was typical of his species. Bilaterally symetrical, sporting slightly longer arms then proportionally normal for humans,, having three fingers and one thumb per hand, no body hair, and red beady eyes for sinister effect, well, not something to meet in a dark alley, or a lit one for that matter. The Captian touched his screen controls and looked at what the sensors were telling him. Two contacts, both at extreme range and moving at 2000 kps and 3000 kps respectively. That ruled out the clan of the Cendel. None of his peoples ships could move as fast as 3000 kps. His own, even with the new engines could only do a shade over 2100 kps. Outsiders then.  Well, the God knew what to do with them. The cleansing would take time to arrive, but he would be back with them. A chance for glory and, more importantly, permanment breeding rights for his lineage. He hissed his commands to depart immediately to the Commander of Navigation. 15 seconds later the black spindly ship disappeared back through the jump point.

The Mk IV Enterprise survey ship, the Charles Hitchcock Adams,  popped through the jump point into the Yamatai system. Within seconds its systems stabilized and it began to build a map of its surroundings. Its computer for astrogational updates found a data anomaly and reported it to Lt. Fransisca Helmsman, the current sensor tech on duty.
Her voice echoed across the nearly silent bridge, causing heads to turn and people to jump. "Sir, radar contact thirty thousand meters away! Active sensors detected. Movement potential at 2115kps."
The captain didn't wait for any additional information. "Emergency jump NOW!" He yelled.
Fortunately, the ship had come through exactly on the jump point and thus didn't have to travel to return to a "jump Ignition" point. More often then not, a jump point would not drop you off at the ignition point on the other side. This effect was called scattering. The theorists tried to explain it as viewing a jump point as a river that you are traveling up. the scattering occurred when you didn't enter quite right and emerged at one of the thousands of creeks that spread off of the river. Unfortunately, you could not reenter at a creek, you had to find the main river that everybody else drained into. Hence, the jump point itself.

This had caused a lot of head scratching at the academy, but it was the closest the instructors could get to explaining it to anyone who was not a quantum mechanics major with a astrophysicist minor degree.
The survey ships sensors just began detecting active sensors activating on the unknown ships when her jump drive activated. On the other side in the system of Riverside she immediately transmitted her warning as she drove madly away from the jump point towards the safety of the next jump point leading to Fienga.
The two Exxon class tankers waiting at the jump point lost no time lighting their drives and followinf the Adams.
The Texaco tankers were faster then the survey ships at 3529Kps versus the survey ships 3000 kps. The tankers would split up. One would head for Washington and be there in 76 days and the other would head for the survey group in Aquifolium and be there in 30 days. The jump chain heading back to Washington should still be unblocked at that point, but they still would not arrive back for nearly 100 days. A lot of time for something to go wrong. As for the second survey ship in Riverside, it was tasked to TF Survey 6 and was one of the older MkII's with a top speed of 2000 kps. Whether or not it had the speed to reach the Fienga jump point or not was unknown as the Yamatai and Fienga JP were only 622 million kilometers apart which was about 2 days for the Adams. TF Survey 6 was 21 days away at its best speed deep in the depths of the Riverside system surveying moons. If the unknowns followed through on the Adams heels they would reach the Fienga JP long before TF Survey 6 would. The only saving grace would be if the unknown ship didn't follow through the JP or didn't have the JP map for Riverside. The unknown ship was clearly waiting at the JP, though for what we didn't know. Further investigation of the sensor records later that day showed that the ship was a 5200 ton vessel with a drive field sufficiently strong to move her at 2115 kps.

Little else was known as she didn't follow the Adams back through the jump point.

TF Survey 6, consisting of an Enterprise Mk II, jumped into the Bonklin system from Fienga during its retreat from Riverside to Washington. the Captian didn't know whether or not the unknown aliens had followed the Adams back through the jump point in Riverside or not, only that he had not encountered an aliens when his 30 day voyage from the inner system had finished. It was  on pins and needles that he had made the jump into the empty system that was Fienga. He had no way of knowing if the aliens were there or not. He knew that they were on the other side of the jump point from Riverside into Yamatai though. It had been with great relief that no aliens had been encountered on the Fienga side. All through out his journey through Fienga to its only other jump point, the one to Bocklin, he and his crew had held thier breathes and watched thier sensors like hawks, waiting for the unknow to creep up behind them or lay in wait in front of them.
They were not expecting an alien fleet in Bocklin at 6.8 million Kilometers towards the Apta Jump point. His sensors detected 15 ships in all and they were headed back to the Fienga Jump Point at 1955 KPS. He tapped his controls to get a readout on ship sizes. The disply blanked and then listed mass readings based off of recorded drive strengths and then noted that the drive signitures were the same ones that the Charles Hitchcock Adams had detected in Riverside.

6-5600 ton ships  Signitures familiar - last recorded in Riverside.
7-6000 ton ships  Signitures familiar - last recorded in Riverside.
2-9000 ton ships  Signitures familiar - last recorded in Riverside.

Fortunately, he could get to the Boise ump Point long before they could, but theier presence here meant that the Survey fleet up the Apta jump chain could be blocked from resupply. There were no fewer then three highly inhabitable planets up the chain which was why the survey units had not been pulled back to finish the "two system out" surveys. The policy of surveying two systems out from all colonized systems had been lax in its execution for the past twenty years and Fleet Admiral Braley had rolled a few heads in Survey Command. It would still take time and with only 22 ships to do it with, well, five years would be about right. EVen though Survey Command had two ships under construction or in refit at all times for the past four years, it had been a struggle to continue to expand the survey capabilities of the fleet. There were small fleets of frieghters sitting in orbit half the time, but the work horse of the fleet, the Enterprise class DSS, had been rarely, if ever, idle. The same could be said of the Exxon class tankers. Finally, at least one tanker was with each major survey area with more moving back and forth to Earth for resupply in addition to the ones assigned to the various battle fleets.
"Helm, continue heading for the Boise Jump Point. Sensors, I want continuous analysis. XO?"
   "Sir?", Commander Samantha Adams said.
"We will get out of here safely if we head straight for the Boise Jump Point. However, the survey fleets up the Apta chain will be transiting through here at some point in the next three weeks. So, do we reveal ourselves to them and let them chase us away from the Apta and Boise jump points so our people can get through or do we run for it? We could also power down and show ourselves as an additional rabbit to chase when they detect our people coming through? This may give them a higher chance of survival."
Samatha was quiet for a moment."Sir, there are so many of them that they could split up easily and catch us all. If even one of them with a reasonably powerful weapon gets into range of us... Its not like we could defend ourselves. Our only possible response would be to surrender or die. We will return at the head of a force that can defend itself if attacked, but in the meantime this ship and its crew represent a valuable resource to the Kingdom." She looked thoughtful for another moment. He recognized the look and waited while her first class mind worked. "Maybe something else can be done. Engineering can rebuild several of our planetary survey satellites to be emitters. We can plant them around the outside of the system on this side and give them low velocities. Push some towards the inner system and some outwards. Have them broadcast at random intervals. The aliens will go looking for them. They will have to, if only to find out what they are. Odds are this will dilute thier force to the point that they will not be able to maintain a strong force at both the Apta and Boise jump points. They may even retreat to holding only the Fienga jump point. If that is the case then our ships may be able to sneak through."
   "Make it so." He smiled.

The Fueling ship Exxon 08 jumped into Washington and immediately broadcast the events in Riverside. Two hours later the reports resting on Admiral Braley's desk. Across from him sat the King and his heir. Senator Amanda Haverty, the Kings granddaughter, was a woman in her thirties, who had inherited her grandfathers good looks. Not so good on a woman though. But there was nothing wrong with her mind.
Her slightly accented voice spoke with concern and worry." Admiral, the last species that we contacted we had to conquer in order to remove them as a threat. What is your feel on these new aliens based off of your reading of the Report?"
"Lady, I am alarmed. The aliens made no attempt to contact our survey unit. Any peaceful race would have sent us something. Our standard first contact message was broadcast and was met with utter silence on their part, until their active sensors came up. When we meet them again, we should have armed backup. I want to detach Battle Fleet and move it to Bocklin. We'll attach survey assets, all of our colliers, and several Exxon units as well. We don't know what we will be facing. With luck, there will be no war. Just a lot of boring talking." He grinned. "Lots of boring talking. "
The King and his granddaughter laughed with him.
The King spoke," Braley, I want her out there in case talking breaks out. She will be my personal representative. If talking doesn't break out then we will do what we did in Danwinegar. One way or another they will cease to be a threat.?
?Sire. ? Braley nodded his aged head. ? Our Battle Fleet in Earth orbit represents our most modern striking  force and will leave in another three hours after loading all of the available Mk V Sparrows. Two Spruances and Portlands will be recalled from Frontier Fleet and returned here as  a local defense fleet. We don't dare weaken the Frontier Fleet further as the alien ship in El Paso still remains a threat. We want to secure the Bocklin system and bottle the aliens up through their only known route of advance to our core systems.  We will use one of the Enterprise survey ships, the Agrippa, for first contact attempts. We have pulled together a support fleet of 2 Exxons, a tug, and all five colliers for a mobile resupply role. We would like to put Amanda on the South Carolina tug as it has the best unladen speed of all our ships. The quarters will not be cramped mylady. The South Carolinas have an excess crew capacity of 130. Once the Battle Fleet leaves orbit it will take 28 days to reach Bocklin jump point in Boise system. It is entirely possible that one of the exxons may beat it there by a couple of days. Our fleet will consist of:

3 Rapier Jump Cruisers
4 Portlands (3 Mk4, 1 is Mk5)
4 Iowas
9 Spruance
3 Navajos

That is a potential salvo of 79 missiles. It should be enough to kill any single ship that it is launched against."

"We have another Enterprise coming out of the yard on Mars in two days. It will be dispatched to Danwinegar with orders for them to release 2 Spruances for the Earth Defense Fleet and will return with them." He cocks his head, obviously thinking for a moment. " We need fast purpose built couriers with jump drives. Otherwise we will be sending Exxons and Enterprises on all sorts of missions, but the ones that they are designed for."

+++++

The Captain and his survey ship had finished dropping off all three converted weather satellites and was headed on a beeline straight for Boise jump point. According to his flight time worked out by the Navigation computers, at least one of the tankers should have jumped into the system from the Apta Jump point several hours ago. The one stationed with the survey fleet up chain should be less then a day behind it.  He had no way of alerting them to the alien presence without giving away his position. He couldn't use lasers as they required a known target so he would have to use omni-directional transmissions to see if any of the ships were here yet. If the aliens didn't know that he was here yet, they most certainly would after that.  The Exxon tankers would come through the Apta  jump point and would flee at flank speed through the system to reach the Boise jump point and supposed safety.  Unfortunately, that meant that they were going to be easier to detect and the alien fleet had fallen off the sensors more then a day ago.

27th of February 2082

The Battle Fleet had arrived at the Cleveland-Boise jump point. The Admiral ordered the fleets shields up and waits 15 minutes to charge them.
?Initiate the probe, Captain.? He wanted the Portland cruisers to all go in as they and the Rapiers had the strongest shields of any of his ships and the best chance of surviving an ambush and returning to tell the tale. The Navajo had shields that were 25% as powerful, but it had the most powerful sensors by far. The Spruance was filler. It had shields that were 60% as powerful as the Navajo's shields, but it had Sparrow Mk V's and twin lasers to thicken the PD capability of the Probe Fleet. If all went well, the rest of the fleet would transit normally. If the aliens were on the other side, it would get ugly. But then, the fleet was here to handle any discussion of intentions. Even those pointed discussions armed with 25cm lasers and focused nuclear warheads. His support fleet was almost a month behind him and was a great factor in his tactical decisions. While he was confident of winning any single battle, it was likely that he would have severely depleted magazines that would render most of his fleet moving targets in the next fight. The flip side was that two Texaco ships had arrived so he wasn't worried about fuel issues. He could maneuver without worrying about running out of fuel and stranding units. He could even run if he needed to. But running was not going to be happening today. Whatever else happened, they needed more information about the aliens capabilities and the only way to do that was to seek an engagement of one kind or another. He didn't want a fight, but he wasn't going to turn one down either. To add to his worries was the King's granddaughter. She was currently onboard the  Texaco class fueler assigned to TF Exxon 11 and the rumor was that she was being groomed to be the Heir. Not a situation designed to be low stress. In reality, it shouldn't be a problem. No support units should be in contact with the aliens anyway.  His orders were to keep them one system back whenever possible. He was going to be at the far end of a tenuous logistics chain, which meant precautions were a good thing.
He watched the countdown end on his view screen and  2 Rapier Jump Cruisers, all 4 Portlands, a Navajo Fleet Scout, and a Spruance Missile Cruiser moved forward and pause in front of the jump point.   Three minutes later they all disappeared from the universe and popped back into being in the Boise system.

The Battle Fleet had finally reached the jump point to Bocklin. The Probe Fleet had reached it 15 hours before and had spent the between times watching the jump point and scanning the surrounding space for surprises. They would wait here for the Fleet train to arrive.

20th of April 2082, 4:25 AM

The Probe Fleet does a combat transit with shields up into Bocklin. Literally seconds later an alien ship suddenly appears in the jump point.  Computers immediately recognize it as the ship that had been waiting on the other side of the Riverside JP. Thus it was hostile. Even as crew began to assimilate the situation, the computers opened fire. A Portland, 2 Iowas, and a Spruance all focused on the alien ship. 7 12 cm lasers and three 25 cm lasers lance through the alien ships hull. She was expanding vapor before the 19 missiles arrived.
The Admiral, fearing the worst, orders the remaining Portland, the four remaining Iowas, and a Spruance to form on the two Rapier JCA and to perform an emergency jump in order to provide backup to the Probe Fleet. They were to return immediately to ferry the remaining units through the jump point to support the combat undoubtedly raging on the other side. Fifteen second later the eight warships disappear from this universe, presumably to reappear on the other side.

One of the Rapiers reappear at the jump point and signal an all clear. The tension on the bridge noticeably relaxes. The remaining part of the fleet begins an orderly transit through the jump point in Bocklin. The other two jump points in Bocklin are literally on the other side of the system, but are relatively close together at only 1.063 million kilometers apart. The kingdoms Navajo scouts could sit in between the two jump points and have a significant overlap. The Probe fleet is sent to guard and secure the Apta JP and the Battle Fleet would secure the JP to Fienga. It would take a day to replenish the missiles used by Battle Fleet, so the Probe Fleet  would arrive at it destination at about the same time as Battle Fleet. The Admiral decides to name Battle Fleet as TF 1.1 and the Probe Fleet as TF 1.2. Once the JP had been secured the support ships would be brought up to provide fuel and potential missile replenishment. Of the two, the fuel would be needed most. The trip across the system would be done with shields up and this would increase fuel expenditures notably. His ships would arrive with anywhere from 52% to 84% of their fuel remaining. Enough for an engagement and most other eventualities that would arise, but not for any extended maneuvers. His march across this system would be cautious. The aliens had had at least one small vessel pass through that he had just destroyed. They probably had more. TF Survey 12 had reported 15 vessels of three distinct sizes, but none were on this jump point. Either they were off checking out the Apta jump point or, more likely, they were at the Fienga jump point. Unless the aliens were really nasty customers, they probably felt that this system couldn't be defended at both the Apta and Boise jump points and probably concentrated their fleet at the Fienga jump point. The ship that he destroyed was quite likely a probe to see what was beyond  in Boise. They were probably looking for which way led to the Kingdoms home worlds. Its destruction would do that, but was unavoidable. It couldn't be allowed to report back the size and disposition of his fleet. TF 1.1 was composed of solely missile ships, the Rapiers, and two of the Navajos and was more then capable of taking and closing the Fienga jump point from any conceivable threat, but wasn't likely to be able to force the jump point without painful losses.  Most of his ships were ranged killers, not meant for point blank killing. Those were reserved for ships like the Portland class of which he had only four. Their three 25 cm lasers could, if not outright kill a target ship, then cripple them badly.
It was time to get going. It would be impolite to keep the aliens waiting.
Title: 2nd of June, 2082 20:25

2nd of June, 2082  20:25

The Navajos from TF 1.1 picked up engine contacts on their passive sensors at the Fienga jump point from 41.68 million kilometers away. The sensor tech notes that there are only twelve contacts when the last sensor reports showed fifteen. Admiral is alerted. He decides that they probably are either on the other side of the jump point or providing escort to another fleet of ships. Likely survey assets.

3rd of June, 2082 00:10

Roughly four hours later the crews are fresh after eating a late dinner and continued rotated down times. The alien fleet was at 1.18 million kilometers and being closed upon at 3000 kps.  He faced a problem. Most of his missiles were the Sparrow Mk IV with a range of 600k km and only a few were Mk V with a range of 800k km. Furthermore, his Mk V's were significantly faster and would arrive first, thus breaking up the weight of his salvos.  If he fired at anything like long range, his Mk V's would arrive way before his others and would likely be wasted, while providing the alien PD crews with experience. He needed to get close in where the missiles would arrive relatively close together. That meant less then 300k km. So be it.

3rd of June, 2082 00:10:15

At a range of  279k km we fire focusing on only three ships: two of 6000 tons and one of 5600 tons.
Our mighty fleet belches forth its missile storm.  51 Mk IV and 4 MK V from the Rapiers flash towards the alien fleet. In comparison, the aliens shoot back a mere 25 missiles in five groups moving at a mere 5000 kps. The launches seemed to have come from the 6000 ton vessals. Still no idea what the other two sizes did.
On the disturbing side, one of the Rapiers and several Iowas have their data links down and they do not fire. Their salvos will be out of sequence and will not be available to saturate the alien PD. The Admiral vows that their Captains will be spending time in brigs, irregardless of this battles outcome.

00:15:05

All 3 remaining Iowas fire 5 seconds late adding 21 missiles to the storm descending upon the alien fleet.

00:15:10

remaining rapier fire , 2 Mk V

00:15:15

All 4 Mk V fired original salvo reach enemy fleet and are killed

00:15:25

Incredibly aliens kill 10 missiles (Mk IV's) out of thirty. Ours will impact in ten sec
We kill 4 missiles out of 25. A disgraceful performance. Theirs will impact in ten sec.

00:15:30

Our PD knock down 9 more missiles and the fleet is breathing easier.

00:15:35

Another 15 missiles are launched by three Spruances. They have elite crews and lower then usual reload times for their launchers.

00:15:40

In spite of the fact that the alien PD kills 9 more missiles, it is just not enough to stop the targeted ships from getting pounded. One of the alien missile ships loses its drive entirely with its targeting sensors while the other two targeted ships loses some drive strength each. The smaller 5600 tons ship also loses its targeting sensors.

In return, our fleet PD kills all but 3 of the remaining missiles and, of this number, one flat out misses and our Rapier takes two hits that scratch its shields. Cheering could be heard from all of our Kingdom bridges as we can now see the likely outcome of the battle.

00:15:45

The enemy fleet disappears through the jump point except for the targeted ships that we were pounding.

00:15:50

our fleet is ordered to cease to fire. The current salvos bearing down on the three enemy ships should more then kill them. There may be enough left to make dust bunnies...

00:15:55

Both alien missile cruisers die to 20 plus missile hits spread between them.

00:16:00

The smaller alien ship disappears in the mist of a boiling cauldron of 29 Mk IV  missiles blowing up around it.

Sensors announce the jump point cleared save for very small wreckage of three enemy ships.

The Admiral is both elated at the victory and grumpy about the severe waste of missiles. Clearly the Kingdom had the technical edge, but it was operating further away from its bases of supply then ever before. A round trip for a tanker was almost 60 days and a little longer for a collier. He would replace the fired ordnance from his Support Fleets colliers and send the emptied colliers back for more. The only question was, did he push on now that he knew that the aliens had only seven ships on the other side of the jump point or did he wait for his colliers to cross the system to him and then jump through with full magazines? There was also the missing 3 ships. Even if they were also on the other side of the jump point, they wouldn't add that much to the enemies fire power, would they?

I have a possible problem. Do I continue the campaign with ver 2.0 and permit the newer members of the forum to scratch their heads when I post designs that simply could not be, or do I ask Eric to make a note at the beginning that I am using an older version of the program and continue happily on my way? The newer versions add much in the way of capability and new horizons for stories, but I have no way to port my game into it and I have found myself rather attached to the Kingdom of Haverty (Old men and all). I have also debated telling the story from the Cendel view point as well. They are lower tech, but not stupid and have begun to evolve better ways of handling their new opponent. Tactics does help a lot, even when your weapons suck.

Haegan,

If you can private message me, I will get back to you offline.  I would like your 2.0 database to beta-test some software I am writing to upgrade it to a 3.0 database.

The software will move the system data to 3.0 (I think).  Once that happens, you will need to build the species, races, and ships again.

8th of June  00:17
After five days of waiting, the Admiral orders the freshly arrived TF 1.2 to take the three Rapiers and to lose several of its ships in exchange. The net result was a force of nine combatants and three Rapiers that had a chance of taking the jump point. After the TF 1.2 transit into Fienga, the Rapiers were to return and guide TF 1.1 through as well. Projections had been run time and time again and they all gave the TF a 99% chance of securing the  jump point on the other side. The Portlands by themselves should have been able to smash the remains of the opposing force. The inclusion of the Spruances and the minor weapons of the remaining ships should just make the victory that much faster. This was assuming that the enemy were waiting for them on the other side. Considering the one sided pounding that had been given to them earlier, they would have to be insane to stay and contest the jump point unless serious reinforcements had arrived. Munitions had been requested by the Rapier and Spruance Captains, but it would take another 23 days for the colliers to arrive and he wanted to make sure that both sides of the jump point were secure. Officially anyway. The waiting was killing him. The flip side was that he could see what was coming and know in advance whether or not to run or fight. As of right now, a huge enemy force could be gathering on the other side and preparing to jump through and engage his ships in a point blank turkey shoot. His fleets advantage lay in long range combat where his missiles could pound his enemy into glowing debris without fear of an effective enemy response. The Portlands were built for the crush of close combat, but he only had four with him. The remaining six were in Frontier Fleet or assigned to Battlefleet Earth. While the four he had would most certainly stop those ships he had already seen...
Enough self doubt. It was time. His finger taped a button and Captain Samuel Adams Simms popped up on his monitor.
  "Sir, all ships report ready."
  "Begin. And good luck"

Three Rapiers, four Portlands, four Spruances, and a Navajo make their jump into potentially hostile territory.

Even as the sensors began to get returns and make sense of them, one of the freshly painted green contacts of TF
1.2 abruptly disappeared from Simms miniature sensor screen and from the far larger battle plot in the middle of the
bridge. A second later yet more contacts appeared, marked in blood red hostile colors and showing at less then 10,000
km. Knife fighting range in space.
"All ships, fire as prioritized" Simms yelled. His helmet carried his order to the other ships. Their turrets and
launchers zeroed in on just three ships. The enemy missile cruisers weren't going to get away so easily this time.
Three salvos of five enemy missiles arrowed in at the Kingdom ships and were, somehow, all killed before they hit
anything.
"Enemy ships are retreating at 1955 KPS, Sir", Lt Jameson said.
"Further away they are the better!", said Simms." We will beat them to death with missiles. Jameson, what happened
to the Atticus?"
"She appears to have been destroyed, sir. Only a few lifepod signals have been detected. The enemy have lost a 9000
ton ship that may be a jump ship, a missile cruiser and have yet another cruiser with appears to be severe drive
damage. The Portlands did well. Our missiles will impact in five seconds.", Jameson reported in a singsong voice.
The bridge was silent as the missile storm descended on three enemy ships. Of the 21 missiles, only 14 hit. It was
enough. One of the escort ships and damaged missile cruiser blew apart. That left only 3 of the escort ships, a
freshly damaged cruiser, and one of the 9000 ton ships that intelligence thought was a jump ship. The jump ship was
moving at a paltry 1711 KPS and was far slower then the other enemy ships. The Escorts had apparently been given
orders to run for it as they had quickly accelerated to 2357 KPS and would leave the other ships in the dust.

Fifteen seconds later, the Spruance missile cruiser, KHS Houston, took multiple hits from what were clearly rail gun
rounds that flattened her meager shields and scratched the heck out of her paint. Had the enemy not been in retreat
the rail gun strike may have hurt the Houston badly.
Five seconds after that the Houston launched a salvo of five missiles at the remaining enemy missile cruiser.
AS the fight of missiles closed 2 were shot down by PD from the enemy jump ship and the other hit the cruiser. A
flight of 2 Sparrow Mk V's moving at twice the speed of a Mk IV, homed in on an escort. One missed and one hit.

Five seconds after that, a flight of three Sparrow Mk IV's arrive at the enemy jump ship. Only one hits, however, and
while it has more then enough power to take out its targets shields and inflict internal damage, the hit seems to
have little effect. Six more missiles are still in flight. 2 are left from a salvo of five that has taken murderous
PD fire and two flights of 2 fired from the Rapiers. The Mk V's are flashing along at 16,000 kps and seem to be
giving the alien PD fits.

Within seconds, the enemy jump ship is slammed by a Mk Iv missile and the other misses. Evidently an engine was hit
as she slows to 1466 kps. The plotting tank shows the enemy cruiser firing a salvo of 3 missiles. Simms isn't
worried. Three missiles would not penetrate his PD envelope. His defenses would need better then thirty or so enemy
missiles to reach anything approaching an effective saturation level. As it was his PD would get an average of two
shots at each missile. He smiles a grim smile and continues to watch the bridge plot and his ships status screens.
Ah, three of the Portlands had finished cycling their 25 cm lasers. They fire at the remaining enemy missile cruiser
and... All nine shots showed as likely hits. The computer proved this by abruptly removing the enemy cruiser from the
plot. One of the enemy escorts also showed hits from two of the four missile targeted at it. The escort abruptly
slowed to 1571 KPS. Not quite half of its recorded top speed of 2357 KPS.

The seconds ticked by slowly until the remaining Portland finished recharging its 25 cm lasers. She fired and hit one of the damaged escorts and dropped its speed to 1571 kps.

Seconds later a flight of four Mk III's home in on the jump ship. Two score direct hits. Meanwhile the enemy PD kill 4 missiles and wipe out a salvo headed for the escort just damaged by a Portland. Another salvo of five missiles homes in on the jump ship and kill it in a rolling boil of explosions

15 seconds later a Spruance launches another salvo at an escort. One of the escorts takes two mk V hits and slows down to 785 kps then takes a laser hit that causes it to explode. Both remaining escorts take two 25 cm laser hits each and they slow down to 1571 kps and zero kps for the other. definitely an indication of extreme damage. The two escorts are doomed as they have nine missiles split between them and the sensors reported loss of fire control sensors from both of them. The end came seconds later as four missiles hit one and all five of the other salvo hit the other. The bridge thundered with cheering in such close quarters. Simms grinned and ordered the one of the Rapiers back through the jump point. Only about three minutes had elapsed. In that time he had lost one ship and killed seven of the enemies. Now all that was left was the clean up. the Rapiers would be assigned the task of picking up alien and human life pods, after he transfered additional security elements to them.

Senator Amanda Haverty sighed and placed her copy of the Fienga Jump Point Battles on her desk and stared at the light gray painted bulkhead. It was clear even to her non-naval eyes that the Spruance had been overcome far too easily by purpose built PD rail guns. It had been killed by concentrated fire from a mere four ships that appeared to be build to only kill missiles. The ships had been smashed up so throughly by the TF fire that little was available for the intel types to look at in terms of the ships. Of course, there was the little matter of 1806 aliens picked up in life pods. She shuddered as a picture of one of them came to mind. Ugly gets from the deepest subconscious fears of mankind and about as capable of being worked with. They fought being extracted from the life pods and killed several of the marines detailed to the deed until a sergeant hit upon the idea of tasers. 50,000 volts stunned them long enough for them to be tied up and cleared out. Little progress had been made on their language, but their physiology... Well, lots of corpses had been discovered. It looked like her mission of "talking them to death" was not going to happen. Her ship would return to earth after redistributing its fuel to the other tankers. Several of the holds had been converted to prisoner wards and several squads of marines had been assigned guard duty. Nobody went near them unless they were escorted by heavily armed marines. Several intel types had been killed when they got too close to the aliens. Worse, the aliens were fast. They could cover twenty feet in literally the blink of an eye and kill in about the same. When the marines had opened fire, it hadn't stopped the aliens from trying to close and kill them. The staff intel xeno psychologist had been ripped apart as had one of the marines. Two other marines had been severely injured as the rest of the squad reacted and killed Even the bulkhead doors and corridors outside of the containment areas had been set up to permit the guards to pour fire into the prisons. Her security chief had expressed his opinion of having suicidal aliens on the same ship as herself. It had been duly listened to and then dismissed. Her Sec team consisted of 8 highly trained men and women that were exmilitary and many had been in special forces as well. If they were nervous then she was too. But. She still had her job to do and the navy didn't need to worry about prisoners out here on the sharp end. In fact, planning hadn't been really carried out for it at all. This was not Danwinegar with a developed habitable planet to drop the survivors onto. In fact, there was no knowledge of where the nearest alien planet was, nor was there any real idea of the size of their industry or fleet for that matter. It was believed that the aliens wouldn't have sent more then half their fleet. That still left at least fifteen warships for their fleet. This did not count the three missing warships that were not accounted for from the fleet that had just been recently smashed. This was causing her more then a little bit of worry. While the Admiral had laughed those three ships off, they were still a threat to the unarmed members of the fleet like the Logistics ships. Both she and Captain Simms had pressed upon the Admiral the need to detach escorts, but the Admiral insisted that it was more important to remain concentrated as overwhelming firepower was far better then "just enough". Overwhelming firepower reduced casualties and the Admiral said that every hull he had would be needed as additional systems were taken. It still didn't feel right, but what could she do? Nothing at this point and further pondering would merely get her even more frustrated. So another thought.

Captain Simms had told her at dinner last night that the loss of the Atticus didn't equal a significant loss of firepower, but it was one less hull available for guard duty. As TF 1 penetrated deeper into alien space it would need to leave forces behind to guard unexplored jump points and maybe even to escort Logistics and Survey ships. The Spruance was well suited to this role. It was designed to engage at a distance and not for close combat like the Portlands. Its shields were maybe a seventh of the capability of the Rapiers and Portlands. Even the Navajos had more powerful shields. It was, however, rated at 6000 tons and could transit with and thus escort any of the Enterprise class surveyors and Texaco tankers. Their size limited the number of engines and shields that could be put into them. A classic problem faced by naval designers down through the centuries. If you wanted to limit its size then you had to find a balance. A faster ship had to sacrifice something. Either protection, weapons, sensors, range, or any of a myriad of other potentials had to be removed or made smaller in order to make the space for more engines. It was one of the reasons that contributed to the rapidly increasing tonnage of the old wet navies and was one of the reasons for the new Montana class Heavy Cruisers. Weighing in at 9750 tons, it was the largest fastest missile based cruiser yet and had been designed to go after the hostile aliens in El Paso. Eliminated them would free up the Frontier fleet for other desperately needed duties, like reinforcing TF 1 or rebuilding TF Battle Fleet stationed at earth. Oddly, the Montana was not the largest vessel in the Kingdom Navy. The Rapier and the newest Portland class cruisers came in at 10750 tons and 10600 tons respectively, but they came no where near the Montana's top speed of 5600 KPS.
She still didn't understand the Captains musing on why the aliens here had rail guns that had a recharge time of 25 seconds. He said that it made for inefficient Pd installations. She would have to ask about that. She had learned a lot about the Navy and how it operated in the past several months, but she needed to know more if she was to succeed her grandfather.
Title: A Change in Plans

30th of February, Sol III

The Chinese had waited long to put the barbarians in thier place. Finally, with the Kingdom in strategic overstretch and its large fleet deployed elsewhere, the Chinese fleet with its predominance of carriers had a chanc of taking and holding planet Earth. The Kardif Imperium had a smattering of carriers, but  as of last report, not enough fighters to man them.  The four Kardif carriers carried 16 fighters apiece giving the Kaldifs 64 fighters total, exclusive of the 12 fighters and 6 bombers based on Earth. It wasa laughable force. Compared to this the Chinese could mount a force of 40 thunders from the escort carriers, 30 each from each of the two fleet carriers and another 40 from the planetary bases giving a total of 140 fighters. A very comfortable lead indeed. While only 100 of these could leave near orbit, it should be enough. In addition to the available fighters, there were another 40 or so "crated" and ready to fill in for casualties. A preemptive strike would be done as soon as the carriers were finished being munitioned. The time for the future was now.
