Title: Updating the Tutorials
Post by: Libelnon on January 07, 2011, 06:16:52 PM
I'm fairly new to the game, myself, but I'm interested in contributing any way that I feel I can, and one of those ways would be to help other new players gain an understanding of how the game works and is played.  The wiki's current tutorials are out of date and not that comprehensive - when I finish my current game, I'd like to spend a while renovating them.

My only thoughts are these:

- I'm not that decent of a player, so I may mislead people.  Not a big problem for me so much though, as I have confidence that I know roughly what I'm doing now, and if I do screw up anywhere, I'm sure the veterans can step in and discreetly correct me. . .  Right?

- I don't really want to delete all of the previous contributor's work.  Maybe I should post them up separately, and people decide what should be done with them at that stage? I'm always a bit touchy about this kind of thing.  (happens too much to me, so I try to avoid doing it to other people, heh)

- I'd also like to organise the wiki a bit better - adding categories would be a good start.  Not that important, but a request none the less.  Can I ask who the wiki admin is, and if they could do that for me?

- I'm also going to finish this game first, get a feel for how things work.  With how addictive this game is, and how poor I tend to be at 4x games (^^' irony being they're my favourite genre) it probably won't take too long.

I'm the wiki admin. Send me a list of categories you wish and I'll add them.

Hi gentlemen,

I was planning to add a few notes on the wiki but I don't have the edit privilege.  Is the wiki editable only by the devs ?

Some pages are locked due to previous vandalism. All you should need is an account.

I am registered and logged in, I also confirmed the email address after registration. But still, no "modify" link shows on the pages.

OK, I've got it : some pages (incidently, the ones I was looking at) are not editable by user (root pages like the Main Page, the User page & so on) while the secondary pages - mostly linked from the Main Page - are editable indeed. I was confused becaused I'm used to opened wikis where all pages are editable. Sorry for the red herring  :-\

I just looked at your user page, it's not protected, so you should be able to create it. I did create a very simple user page which you should be able to edit.

As for the Main page, that is protected and will stay that way. I got tired of seeing ads for male enhancement drugs. Any edits required, let me know and I can make them.

Looking over the settings, anyone who has registered with a confirmed email address and has an age of 4 days is allowed to make edits. And actually, anyone who is autoconfirmed (5 edits, 4 days old) can edit Main.

Can someone who meets those requirements make a test edit on the main page for verification?

Confirmed, I meet the criteria and the edit option appears for me.

Thank you. So it is working as intended :)

Still confused with the wiki  :-[

I was planning to create a new 'Missile series' page and to fill it up with the adapted content of this thread : http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php/topic,1733.0.html (http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php/topic,1733.0.html). But I found no way of creating this page.

As for my user Page, I can actually edit it now but I'm sure I could not create it.

Maybe the 5 edits / 4 days olds criteria also applies on page creation ?

It should. Not that I'd recommend such a course of action, but in theory one could edit an existing page 5 times and then wait for the 4 day period.

Is any of this worth adding to the Tutorial section?

Missile Design for Noobs, the Kiwi/Emu approximation:

I would go for it as I always have troubles with missle design.

Information overload is usually preferred over information drought.
