Xenology team

I found some alien ruins, made a Xenology team, and I'm not sure how to get them to work.  I dropped them off on the planet in question, and on the population summary screen it still says "Unknown Race - Xenology team required".  Do I just have to wait, or is there something I'm missing?

it takes some time i had a breakthrough in a few months before and a breakthrough in a few years

In my humble opinion anything that could be considered a balance issue is a moot point unless the AI utilize it against you because otherwise it's an exploit you willing choose to use to game the system. 
Rule 0 Is effect : "The SM is always right/ What SM Says Goes."
