Federation Ship Designs, 2125-2130
The Corporate Federation has no military, as such, and the bulk of upper and middle management of the Corporations that compose the Federation and from which its bureaucracy is drawn, fervently believe that nationalism and militarism almost destroyed the human race. The rest of the population is not as fervent as the Corporate Federation’s managers, but most pay at least lip service to the party line, especially in light of the wealth and peace that the Corporate Federation has brought to Earth. Given these beliefs, the Corporate Federation will not be building armed space craft until such time as there is a demonstrated need.

This upgrade adds the latest nuclear-pulse engines, increasing the ship’s speed by over 50%. In addition, the fuel capacity is increased, resulting in adding an additional 150 tons to the overall mass. The increased fuel capacity somewhat offsets the increased fuel usage by the new engines. The Armstrong was refitted to this class in 2128.

The Far Seer class is similar to the Explorer class, however, it was designed and built with much better technology. This can be seen in the improved sensors available for this class, including active sensors, which the Explorer’s don’t have. These improvements were made without increasing the size of the ship, which was possible because of the improved hull material used in the construction of this class.
The first two units of this class were launched in January, 2130.

This ship is the Federation’s first attempt at a unit capable of interstellar travel. The jump drive takes up twenty-five percent of the ship’s mass, making it nearly impossible to add in survey sensors. Instead of creating a barely capable survey unit, the Federation instead decided to create a tender capable of conveying survey ships to other stars and then supporting them with additional fuel and maintenance supplies once there.
While the technology and design was finalized in 2129, it would take some time before the Federation’s yards could build such a large vessel.

Federation Military Ship Designs
For the first thirty-two years of its existence the Corporate Federation did not maintain a “national” military force of any kind. The various regional governments of Earth, all fairly weak, maintained regional militia forces, and the largest corporations maintained “household” troops that were largely seconded to Federation service as peacekeepers, but the Federation itself eschewed large-scale military organizations as detrimental to the well-being of humanity.
While the Federation did not built any kind of armed warships for most of its history, it had commissioned extensive R&D into weapons and associated systems that might be needed in an emergency situation. This purely theoretical effort has now become a reality now that humanity is on the verge of interstellar travel. Still, even so, the Federation wants to avoid the ills associated with large-scale military industrial complexes, and so has only authorized the construction of defensive PDC’s for the Earth, the Moon, and Mars. In addition, the Board has authorized the development of ‘design studies’ for theoretical warship classes.

This PDC design was commissioned by the Federation Board in response to the discovery of jump points in the Solar System. The Board recognized that the galaxy was completely unknown, and that it was possible that unknown and potentially hostile races could exist. Therefore, they approved this design, but, remembering the attempted military coup in 2109, they required that these installations were to be kept firmly under the Board’s control. At the time they were designed, the Federation intended to build five of these units, four on Earth and one on the Moon. Each PDC would be directly controlled by a Board member and their crews would be drawn from their corporate holdings.
Construction began on the PDC’s located on the Earth in September, 2130.

This refit to the original design adds the 2nd generation jump drove developed by Copernicus Labs, freeing up a significant amount of tonnage. In addition, this version is equipped with newly designed high efficiency ion drives. Each of the new engines is three times the size of the older Cox-Glover designs, which gives increased efficiency. In addition, Akhtar Aerospace designed this engine with slightly reduced thrust, which greatly increased fuel-use efficiency. The increased efficiency gives this design a significantly increased cruising range over the older design.
The space saved by the improved jump drive was devoted to an improved sensor suite and enlarged living facilities that would allow the ship to remain in deep space for up to two years.

In the aftermath of the encounter with the Obscura in the New York system and the loss of Foster Interstellar’s survey fleet, the Federation Board decided that a space-going military was necessary for the survival of humanity, and for the Federation to prosper. While the first generation of Federation military ships were not particularly capable, they were not intended to engage the Obscura in anything but the direst emergency. Instead, they were intended as training platforms to train their crews and would later be refitted with the latest technology before being committed to battle.

This is yet another update of the now venerable Enterprise class. This design update was done in response to the destruction of the Foster Interstellar survey group in August, 2131. The federation Board commissioned this design update as part of its project to develop a defense strategy for the Solar System. This design includes updated technology across the board, including engines, sensors, defenses, and weapons. This is the first of the Enterprise class designs that was actually built.

The missile boat design was a series of compromises that satisfied no one. The original intent was to design a 1,000 ton unit mounting missiles that could be built in newly built shipyards without having to expand those yards, a process that was time consuming and expensive. Unfortunately, the technology did not exist to make a 1,000 ton unit that was fast enough and carried enough missile launchers to be effective. In the end the design teams decided to settle on s 2,250 ton hull with miniaturized launchers that were the best Federation technology could provide.

The Interim Government has been struggling to determine the best way to defend the Earth and the Solar System, and, as of the end of 2134, has been forced into a completely defensive stance. Several different strategies have been proposed and then abandoned or shelved for the time being. Currently, all efforts are aimed at surviving the next attack, with all planning beyond that being completely theoretical.
Planetary Defense Command
The Planetary Defense Command is Earth’s shield and sword, and is held in high esteem by Earth’s population, who know that without the EDC they would have been wiped out long ago. All efforts related to the defense of the Earth for the near future have been focused on EDC rather than the fleet, a trend that is likely to continue for some time. The EDC is a high-morale force, and is held in high esteem by the general populace.

This design includes three additional advanced fire controls for the AMM launchers. In the aftermath of the first attack on the Earth the EDC’s defensive bases had suffered armor damage. As part of the program to repair them this improvement was authorized as a relatively cheap way to improve the bases without major changes. The base’s sensors were not improved, as a research effort to develop new missile detection sensors at the time this plan was authorized. To save money and time, the Interim Government decided to put the new anti-missile sensors in a separate base.

The Interim Government decided to improve the offensive bases at the same time as the defensive bases were being repaired and rebuilt. The sole improvement is the new missile fire controls, able to target enemy ships out to 300 mkm’s. As with the defensive bases this design’s active sensors were not improved, and instead the Interim Government decided to build a separate base that would serve all of the existing PDC’s.

This PDC design was roughed out by then-Admiral Foster during the time he was detained by the old Federation Board. This PDC was small and was capable of being built by planetary industry in a few days as a last ditch stop-gap effort. Lightly armored and mounting no sensors of its own, this design is dependent on outside support to function. However, in the last days before the first Dregluk attack, this design was viewed as a necessary component of Earth’s defense. This design mounts the old-style Thunderbolt Missile Fire Controls, meaning that it cannot engage the Dregluk ships at long range with the current version of the Bludgeon LRASM’s.

In the aftermath of the disastrous events of August 2134, it was clear that Earth’s current anti-missile sensors were completely inadequate. Therefore, a research effort was commissioned by the Interim Government to develop a new anti-missile sensor immediately. This effort was not completed in time to be included in the refit designs for the existing PDC’s, but in any case, the new anti-missile sensor was judged to be too expensive to be included in all of the PDC’s anyway. This PDC is intended to serve all of Earth’s defensive PDC’s.

Like the Looking Glass PDC detailed above, the Oculus class is intended to serve all of the offensive PDC’s on the Earth by detecting enemy ships at a range commensurate with the offensive attack range of the new Bludgeon LRASM’s. The Looking Glass design also contains an anti-missile sensor, which is intended as a backup to the Looking Glass Base, ensuring that should something happen to that base Earth’s defenders will not be helpless.
The Fleet
In the press of activity surrounding Humanity’s attempt to survive the Dregluk onslaught, the Interim Government has not had time to rename the old Federation Militia. The Militia itself uniformly hated the name “militia”, indicating as it did a temporary and\or amateur organization. In the months since the first attacks the Militia has become known only as the Fleet. The Fleet has been of secondary importance to Earth’s fight to survive, and while it has contributed to Earth’s defense in every attack since the first, everyone knows that the Earth has only survived because of the EDC. The Interim Government has found it nearly impossible to build up the fleet in the face of constant bombardments by the Dregluk which damage ships in orbit and erode the shipyards needed to repair and buildup the fleet. Still, planning continues to develop a fleet capable of taking the fight to the Dregluk.
The Interim Government’s fleet planning process has been somewhat…chaotic, largely given the constant death toll from Dregluk bombardments and the need to find some way, anyway, to respond. As of yet the fleet has not developed a coherent plan to take the fight to the enemy, nor even to defend the solar system. In spite of the fact that the fleet’s commander, Admiral Law, is the acknowledged leader of Earth’s combined military, the fleet itself is general low-morale as it has been forced into a secondary role, limited to orbital operations and the occasional rescue op. Worse, Admiral Law’s responsibilities as the leader of Earth’s military has meant that the fleet itself has been neglected, and it has not been able to develop a coherent plan to fight the enemy.

In the aftermath of the Disaster of August and the fall of the Federation, all fleet deployment strategies were either put on hold or completely changed. Admiral Law and his staff decided early on that the Thunderbolt missile was no longer viable, as it was too short-ranged to be useful in an engagement with the Dregluk. This made the Brooklyn class problematic, as it was not large enough to mount useful numbers of Bludgeon missile launchers. Thus, the r4 design was born. This class is intended to defend other ships or planetary sites with its large number of AMM launchers.

This class is an exercise in pure desperation. In the days after the Disaster in August, there was a desperate push to deploy as many combat capable spacecraft as possible. This design was developed to cheaply transform Explorer and Farseer class exploration ships into makeshift warships. Two exploration ships were refitted to this design. Current thinking is that the only effective offensive missile is the Bludgeon LRASM, therefore units of this design will likely either be upgraded with better fire controls or will be scrapped.

This original version of this class carried Thunderbolt missiles and was designed by the Federation Militia, largely as a design study for a quick reaction force. It was never intended to be deployed. After the Disaster, the Interim Government took this design off of the shelf and replaced the Thunderbolt missiles with Bludgeon missile launchers, however, the hull was too small to carry Bludgeon missile launchers in useful numbers. None of the earlier versions were built. Instead, the r2 class was designed, replacing the missile launchers with meson cannons. This class is intended to be deployed alongside the Attack Boat class units. This unit mounts no active sensor, because of its small size, and is thus dependent on other units to provide detection capabilities.

This is the latest version of the Federation, and now the Interim Government’s, largest warship. Only one unit of this class has been built to date, the Mars. This class suffers from the same problems that all pre-war Federation designs suffered from, the ability to use only medium ranged missiles. Currently, there are no plans to upgrade the class, although that will likely change at some point.

The deployment of salvage units in early 2136 proved to be a turning point in the war against the Dregluk. Almost from their first salvage operations the two salvage ships began returning Dregluk technology to the Earth that allowed humanity’s R&D effort to race ahead. The fruits of this effort were realized in mid-2136 when the latest generation of Aegis, Thunderbolt, and Bludgeon missiles were deployed. It wasn’t until the end of the year that systems capable of properly utilizing these new weapons were developed and ready for deployment. The designs below include many new technologies intended to put humanity on an even footing with the Dregluk.
System Defense Command
With the construction of bases on the Moon and Mars, the Earth Defense Command has been renamed and rebranded as the System Defense Command. In spite of the recent successes of the Fleet, the System Defense Command is still considered humanity’s primary bulwark against Dregluk attack, and has first call on resources for humanity’s defense
Shield Class PDC:
Designed in mid-2135, this base was intended to supplement the anti-missile defenses of the EDC. Once the current R&D effort is complete, major research assets will be assigned to improve meson technology.

Looking Glass r2 PSB:
This upgrade replaces the older AMM sensor with the latest version of the planetary AMM search sensor, and should allow the planetary defense bases to engage missiles out to a much greater range than they could before. The advances incorporated in this base are derived from recovered Dregluk technology. The Looking Glass base on Earth was upgraded to this design in mid-2136.

This upgrade to the cornerstone of the Earth’s defense network improves the original design in several important ways. All of the older fire control systems are replaced with the latest generation anti-missile fire controls, which will extend the engagement range of the base greatly, improving its ability to intercept incoming missiles farther away from the Earth. In addition, the sensors are replaced with the latest anti-missile search sensors, to give the base independent capability to acquire targets, should that be necessary. Upgrades to this design will begin in early 2137.

Final Line r1 class PDC:
The Final Line bases were constructed in the tense days just before the first Dregluk attack on the Earth. They have been largely sidelined throughout the battles of the two and a half years as the larger Sword class bases have engaged targets far beyond the Final Line class’s range. This upgrade will allow the base to engage targets out to the current limit of the Bludgeon III’s engagement range, and, in addition, increases the number of launchers to twenty.
A small faction within the Senate wanted to decommission these bases, however, the System Defense Command successfully campaigned to not only improve their capabilities but increase the number of launchers in each base.

The Republican Fleet
The last year has been particularly good for the Fleet. Prior to 2136 the Fleet had languished in orbit, contributing in a minor way to the missile defense of the Earth but otherwise inconsequential, as the Earth Defense Command took every opportunity to point out. In 2136, though, the fleet has come into its own. True, it was largely forced into action by the need to defend the salvage ships, but after the first several engagements the Fleet has gained confidence even as its capabilities increased. The technological advancements of 2136 will allow the fleet, once refitted, to engage the Dregluk in open space on much more balanced terms, or even terms that are advantageous to humanity.
Saratoga r1 class Monitor:
The r1 upgrade adds improved ECM, fire controls, anti-missile launchers, and sensors to the Monitor class. In addition, a larger fuel tank was included, as the original design’s tankage was too small for its intended function. R1 class monitors will be capable of engaging and destroying Dregluk battleships in open space from ranges beyond the Dregluk ship’s own missile range.

Planet r2 class Battlecruiser:
This upgrade for the Planet class introduces new missile launchers capable of launching missiles twice as fast as the older designs, increased magazine space, improved ECM, and better sensors and fire controls. It was decided that it would be too expensive to upgrade the engines, though, so while it is faster than known Dregluk designs, it is too slow to catch a fleeing Dregluk ship.
The Admiralty has not decided if additional Planet class units will be built. While the Mars has been the cornerstone of the Fleet since it was built, and has proved instrumental in several engagements with the Dregluk, it is not considered capable enough, even in this configuration, to stand up to Dregluk ships on its own. No decision has been made as to the timing of the refit for the Mars class. Yards large enough to build or refit a Mars class battlecruiser are rare, and are in high demand for monitors and new ship classes intended to take the fight to the Dregluk.

Brooklyn r5 class Missile Frigate:
This upgrade for the dedicated missile defense frigate is improved in nearly every way. The r5 version has mark II launchers that halve the reload time of the earlier launchers, allowing the r5’s to launch nearly twice as many defensive missiles in the same amount of time, in spite of the fact that the ship has fewer launchers. In addition, the ship is equipped with better anti-missile sensors and fire controls, increased magazine space, increased armor, and ECM.

Lake class Missile Frigate:
The Lake class is a refit/upgrade for the Brooklyn r3 class, and is intended to be a separate class. Originally, given the overwhelming need for missile defense, plans had been made to convert all existing Brooklyn class ships to the r4 dedicated missile defense design, however, before that could happen several r3 versions were produced and proved invaluable in taking the fight to the Dregluk. Therefore, the decision was made to split the r3’s off from the Brooklyn line and create a new class of dedicated attack frigates with the latest sensors and fire controls.
The Lake class sacrifices several of the Brooklyn r3’s box launchers to mount additional AMM launchers, which were upgraded to the latest design, giving the ship much better missile defense capability.
The Lake class, and the Brooklyn class above, are small enough to be built relatively quickly and in large numbers, and for these reasons the classes are intended to become the backbone and primary striking power of the Republican fleet.

Additional Designs as of the end of 2137
Moving into 2138, refits on the Republic’s fleet were well underway and the Admiralty began looking at designs to round out the Republic’s power-projection capabilities.
BuReLoc D1 class Colony Ship:
This colony ship is more than twice the size of the older Conestoga class colony transports, and is almost twice as fast. The Republic’s Bureau of Relocation, which has primary responsibility for moving the Republic’s citizens away from the radioactive environment on Earth, is banking on these larger and faster colony ships becoming the backbone of the Republic’s relocation program.

Essex class Assault Ship:
With the Admiralty beginning to look at interstellar operations for the first time since the war with the Dregluk began, gaps in the capabilities of the Fleet are becoming achingly clear. One such gap is the lack of modern, dedicated warships capable of jumping through a jump point without a jump gate. Currently the Fleet relies on two Tennessee class jump ships built six years ago by the Federation, and never refitted with newer technology. Instead of refitting these older ships, the Admiralty has decided to purpose design a jump-capable warship built around the last military jump engine designed by Copernicus R&D Labs prior to the war. The Federation built three advanced military jump drives to be installed on existing Tennessee class units, but this refit never took place due to the war. This limits the size of the new class to 15,500 tons, but this is sufficient to get any currently existing class of unit through a jump point, with the sole exception of the Monitor class. R&D is slated to begin in late 2138 or early 2139 on an improved military jump drive, however, that will not be available for some time.

Sensor Pod class Sensor Platform:
This design was proposed by the Admiralty’s top-secret Long-Range Ship Design Working Group. The Group, as they are informally known within the bowls of the Admiralty’s labyrinthian bureaucracy, proposed the pods as ways to easily and cheaply fill in gaps in the Fleet’s capabilities. The proposal met with resistance from various groups in the Senate that were opposed from diverting shipyard space away from ‘regular’ warship production, however, Admiral Law managed to get a proto-type version of this class slipped into the production schedule.

Falcon r4 class Interceptor:
The Republic had not originally intended to authorize an additional refit of the interceptor class; however, the first-generation meson cannons were a disappointment. They were very short ranged, making it very difficult for even the swift interceptors to remain within range of targets doing their best to evade them. The Interceptor class is a darling of the Senate, and its proponents in the Senate managed to push through an R&D program that produced a second-generation meson cannon and followed up with appropriations to refit the Interceptor fleet.
This refit replaces the older Atkinson-Jenkins meson cannon with an improved version capable of engaging at a longer range. In addition, the interceptor’s fire controls are replaced with improved fire controls, improving the ship’s ability to hit its target.

As the Republic begins to face the reality of war on an interstellar scale, it realized that it had serious gaps in its capability to project power. The Republic inherited four older troop transports, but they were too slow to rely on for interstellar deployments. Thus, the Assault Transport class was commissioned to fill this hole. The Assault Transport is more than twice as fast as the older People Mover class still in use, and is armored and equipped with two CIWs units for missile defense. In addition, the Assault Transport class is designed for two-year deployments, and has a much greater range than the older designs.

Republic Fleet
The Philadelphia System Pacification Campaign gave the navy very useful experience in power projection, and Admiral Bradshaw used the experience he had gained in the campaign to successfully argue for across the board improvements in fleet support units. In addition, Admiral Bradshaw argued, successfully, that older units such as the Mars, which were slower and equipped with weapons that were shorter ranged than modern units, had no place in the order of battle during any campaign. In fact, Admiral Bradshaw’s arguments were used by Admiral Law to force through a requirement that all future combat designs be capable of at least 6,000 km/s, and all support designs be capable of at least 5,000 km/s.
Battle Fleet Units
Star class Battleship:
This is the Republic’s first capital ship design, and uses all of the Republic’s latest innovations. The design was given a top speed in excess of the mandated 6,000 km/s in an attempt to give the battleships a reservoir of speed that could be used to tow pods without too much degradation of their overall capability to keep up with their smaller escorts. This class was equipped with a capital fire control system that had a potential to control missiles out to a much longer range than possible with the current Thunderbolt III ASM. This was done to account for future increases in range for planned missiles, specifically for an extended range version of the Thunderbolt.

Planet r2(C) class Battlecruiser:
An (r2) version of the Planet class had long been finalized, but was never built due to lack of yard space and uncertainty within the Admiralty as to the future of the battlecruiser class. Before the decision was made one way or another it appeared that technology had by-passed the battlecruisers and that their time had passed, and a refit of the Mars fell out of favor. The outstanding performance of the Mars throughout the long war with the Dregluk, coupled with the fleet’s need for a command ship, has forced a re-evaluation of that decision, though. The old designs for the r2 refit were dusted off and updated with the latest technology, and a flag bridge was added.

MBr3(LR) class Missile Boat:
The r3 version of the missile boat design have proved invaluable in the ongoing defense of the Solar system against the Dregluk. The Bludgeon missiles launched by units of the missile boat class far outrange all known Dregluk missile designs, and have allowed Republican forces to engage numerous Dregluk attacks from beyond the Dregluk ship’s ability to respond, leading to many one-sided victories. However, the r3 version of the missile boats have several critical weaknesses related to compromises made during the worst years of the Dregluk bombardment. The missile boats were never intended as strategic offensive weapons, instead they were intended to be defensive weapons to control access to the Solar System. Therefore, the missile boats were designed to operate away from their bases for no more than one month, and had very limited fuel tankage, limiting them in many ways. With the advent of advanced engines and technology, though, the Admiralty decided to shift production over to a long-ranged variant of the missile boat, the r3(LR) version. This variant is capable of operations away from its base for up to a year, and has nearly three times the operational range of the earlier classes. Coupled with the LRS version below, this class will make a potent addition to the navy’s long-range striking power.

This class is a direct result of Admiral Bradshaw’s experiences in the Philadelphia and San Francisco systems. The Philadelphia Pacification Campaign pointed out the need for a forward deployed capability to rearm fleet units equipped with missile tubes, and this class is the Admiralty’s answer. Capable of a top sped of 6,125 kps, far in excess of any known enemy unit, this unit can keep up with combat units and provide invaluable rearmament capability.

The venerable Fleet Support class units receive modern engines in this upgrade, and the magazine space is increased by fifty percent at the cost of fuel capacity. The Fleet Support class was originally envisioned as an all-around support unit providing missiles, supplies, and fuel, however, with yard capacity being diverted to construct Hero class units, the Admiralty decided to emphasize missile carrying capacity in these units and allow the UNREP class units provide fuel support.

UNREP r2 class Fleet Support Vessel:
The Federation built several of the original version of these large tankers to support its colonization and survey efforts. Given the Republican Navy’s fuel-thirsty designs, the old UNREP units have proven to be necessary to the fleet’s attempts to pacify even the systems adjacent to the Solar System, much less systems two or more jumps away. The older designs were too slow to keep up with modern fleets though, and would have been extremely vulnerable if the fleet was forced to retreat. Therefore the r2 version, with an expanded engine segment with modern engines was designed.

Republican Navy Survey Command
The Admiralty, with the agreement of the Senate, is constructing new units to survey systems in support of ongoing offensive campaigns against the Dregluk and Obscura. Admiral Law went before the Senate several times in 2137 to argue for the creation of a new survey command to support his planned offensive actions against first the Obscura and then the Dregluk. The Senate was initially reluctant to divert resources away from fleet construction needs, but once the Fleet successfully cleared the New York system the Senate approved the diversion of yard space once current construction goals had been met. The new Survey Command is subordinate to the Navy and will be under its operational control. Because of the disaster that befell the Federation’s survey corporations, the Admiralty decided that all survey units would be equipped with the latest and best thermal signature suppression and cloaking technology available.

Survey Scout Class Jump Scout:
There were several competing design concepts examined during the design phase of the project to create a new survey fleet. In the end, based on the experiences of old Federation’s survey corporations, the Admiralty decided to go with a scout design that was intended to wait at the jump point and act as a communications link for the rest of the group. While some in the Admiralty considered this a waste of a hull that could be used as either an additional survey ship or a fuel tanker, the ever-cautious Admiralty went with the design that ensured that any hostile actions by aliens discovered during the exploration groups survey efforts would be reported to the Admiralty.

During planning sessions for operations in the Washington system it became clear that the Republic would need new troop transports if it expected to project power beyond the Solar System. Thus, the Assault Transport design was conceived. This transport includes basic missile defense, an armored hull to protect the troops, and a maximum speed two to three times that of earlier troop transports. The civilian yards over Earth will launch the first of these new units in April, 2142.

Defender Class Destroyer Escort
The Defender class was intended to replace the smaller Brooklyn class frigates in the fleet missile defense role, and the design was created with the intention of alleviating the problems with the Brooklyn class. This class has a designed endurance of eighteen months, more than three and a half times the endurance of the smaller frigates. In addition, the Defender’s fuel range is over eight times that of the smaller frigates, eliminating the most common complaint from task group commanders trying to deal with the notoriously short-ranged frigates. Finally, while the Defender actually carries one less AMM launcher, it mounts an additional fire control system, giving it more flexibility, and its magazine space is almost three times as large as a Brooklyn class unit.
The Defender class eliminates the CIWs that the frigates mounted and replaces it with heavy shielding.

Pod-Anti-Small Unit
After Admiral Wallace’s fleet encountered small Dregluk units in the Austin system which they were unable to acquire with their sensors or target with their fire controls, the Admiralty commissioned the development of sensors, fire controls, and missiles to engage the new Dregluk small units. In order to get the new systems into service quickly, the Admiralty decided to modify a standard missile pod to incorporate the new systems.
The Admiralty design teams believe that the Dregluk small units would not likely be equipped with much in the way of armor or shields, therefore, Republican units would only have to launch two or three missiles at each Dregluk small unit to eliminate it, or at least mission-kill it. Therefore, this pod design mounts six fire control systems with four launchers for each fire control, allowing the pod to engage six separate Dregluk small units at a time.
The Admiralty has authorized the development of a new missile for this unit, designated the Raptor Anti-Small Unit Missile (ASUM). This missile is the same size as a Thunderbolt ASM, but has a range of 50 mkm’s, is very fast, and has a comparatively heavy warhead.
It is clear that Admiral Wallace will not be able to enter the Dregluk home system (Austin), if indeed it is their home system, without a means to deal with these small units. To rush these into production, the Admiralty has obtained Senatorial approval to devote Earth’s industrial capacity towards producing the systems needed to build these designs. This pre-production should allow the Martian shipyards to rapidly built these pods.

The Republic Fleet’s frigates are a significant part of its defensive and offensive firepower; however, they have significant limitations that became large liabilities when they were used in the offensive against the Dregluk. The Brooklyn r5, the fleet standard AMM design, had a crew endurance of only six months, and fuel tankage that was only sufficient for a meager seventeen days of continuous flight. These were not significant problems while this class was engaged in the defense of the Solar System, or even in the systems adjacent to the Solar System, which is, after all, exactly what this class was designed for. As humanity has become more and more secure in its home system, though, it has become increasingly necessary for the fleet’s frigates to be capable of acting at greater and greater distances from home. Therefore, this upgrade to the basic design improves the crew endurance time to eighteen months, and, by replacing the older engines with newer, more efficient engines, the class range is increased almost eight-fold to almost 61 billion kilometers. In addition, some of the space/mass savings from the improved engines is devoted to a larger magazine capacity.

After the failure of the second missile attack on Dregluk Prime, the Republic’s Admiralty began looking at alternatives, should the planned fourth attack with specialist missiles also fail. This re-exanimation of the Fleet’s operational concept came at the same time that it had become clear that the Republic’s faltering economy could barely build enough missiles to supply newly built ships, much less replace the massive expenditures against the Dregluk. At the same time as the faltering munitions industry was repurposed to build the new fast planetary attack missiles, the 1st Fleet was requesting a massive resupply of missiles that simply weren’t available. In a desperation move, the Admiralty stripped the Home Fleet of all Bludgeon IV and Thunderbolt IV ASM’s, replacing them with their older Mark III versions, so that the 1st Fleet could be resupplied. The fact that the Home Fleet, and some of the PDC’s in the Home System, had been stripped of their best missiles served as a blatant warning to the Admiralty, as well as the Consul’s office and the Senate. For once competing voices were stilled as the Republic’s military and civilian leadership were forced to accept that their chosen strategy of long-ranged missile combatants was, perhaps, no longer viable. Or at least, it was barely sustainable at its current level. Certainly, expanding the fleet with more missile ships was not seen as viable at this time.
Therefore, with this confluence of events smoothing the way for a change of course, those officers in the fleet that had long advocated for an enlarged beam force seized their opportunity. They pointed out that R&D on improved beam weapons had been going on for some time, and that improved versions of the venerable Hunter-Killer designs would be very popular with the public and the Senate, both of whom venerated the doughty Dregluk killers. When this proposal was accepted by the Admiralty, they went further and advocated for a complete change in future construction priorities, shifting from the construction of missile combatants to beam-armed ships. Given the Republic’s faltering missile production, the outcome was preordained.
In short order yards were being converted to construct several different beam-armed ship classes. The new production of missile armed ships was to cease completely, although several refits were authorized to remedy deficiencies found in several classes. In addition, several new classes of gauss-cannon armed ships were authorized to provide a missile defense capability for the fleet that did not rely on expendable missiles.
Siege-Breaker class Battleship
The Siege-Breaker is designed specifically to attack the defenses over Dregluk Prime, should that become necessary. The ship is heavily armored and shielded, to absorb the punishment that will come its way while it pounds its enemies with its lasers. There was some debate about equipping the ship with large and small lasers, as well as the spinal laser, but after some consideration the Admiralty decided that the 150 mm laser would be its primary weapon of choice, largely because it was the largest laser that could be charged and fired every five seconds, making it a very formidable weapon.

Enterprise r6 class Hunter-Killer
The two currently existing Enterprise class ships, the Endeavor and the Assistance, are Enterprise r4 class units. The r5 version of the HuK was designed, but never put into service due to the Fleet’s preoccupation with missile combatants. The r6 is a quantum leap in capability for the venerable HuK class. Like the Siege-Breaker, it is armed with a spinal laser and a number of smaller 150 mm lasers, just far fewer than the battleship, of course. The shielding has been upgraded to the latest Xi design, giving the HuK’s the best shielding in the fleet, at least until the first Siege-Breaker is launched. In addition, the r4’s older engines are replaced with the latest magnetic confinement fusion designs, giving the ship more power and better fuel efficiency. This design is also equipped with the latest sensors and fire controls.
Under normal conditions the cost to refit the older r4 designs to this standard would be considered prohibitive, but the public and the Senate considers the Assistance and the Endeavor to be national heroes, therefore, the expense will be paid, regardless of the fact that a brand-new ship could be purchased for less.

Gauss cannon equipped ships
After the Dregluk dramatically demonstrated the utility of their gauss cannon weaponry, the Admiralty began examining the available gauss cannon technology. Fortunately, considerable R&D resources had been expended on developing gauss cannon tech over the years, mostly to improve the CIWS installations that had been installed on many early designs. With the realization that the current missile production facilities were having trouble keeping up with demand, the Admiralty decided that an alternate, non-missile based missile defense should be deployed, and with the example of the Dregluk defense of their home world fresh at hand it was obvious that gauss cannon turrets was the way to go. Two different gauss cannon turrets were developed, a twin model and a triple gauss cannon mount, and several designs were developed to mount the new turrets.
While the Republic’s gauss cannons are not as developed as those used by the Dregluk, they are close, and the Admiralty hopes that numbers will make up for any technical deficiencies.

The Agamemnon(G) is a variant of the standard Agamemnon design below in the missile combatant section. For this class the designers merely removed the missile launchers, magazines, and fire control systems for the ASUM missiles mounted on the standard design, and replaced them with gauss cannon turrets and point defense fire controls. Creating this class as a variant of the standard Agamemnon class also allowed the shipyards that were devoted to constructing the standard units to be converted to construct the Agamemnon(G) class with little difficultly or cost.

Missile Units
Even as the Admiralty came to the decision that no new missile units would be constructed, there was a mounting awareness of the fact that several existing missile designs had critical flaws that had to be remedied, so approval was given to go ahead with refits for these classes even as new construction came to a halt. The one exception to this is the Agamemnon class DDE, as the design was commissioned before the paradigm shift in the Admiralty, and this unit was seen as necessary to counter any small units deployed by an enemy.
Agamemnon class Destroyer Escort
While the Anti-Small-Unit-Missile (ASUM) pods were seen as a necessary stop-gap to get a critically necessary capability to the front lines as soon as possible, the Admiralty was never happy relying solely on these pods. Instead, a DDE hull was designed to utilize these missiles and fire controls, to provide the Republic’s fleets with protection against small units.

The original Brooklyn(F) class fast frigate was designed to escort the HuK’s of the fleet, and were basically standard Brooklyn class AMM frigates stripped down with extra engines installed to give them enough speed to keep up with the HuK’s. The HuK commanders were very enthusiastic about finally having some missile defense coverage that wouldn’t slow them down, and the class was well received by the fleet. Unfortunately, through a design bureau error, the short endurance and small fuel tankage of the original Brooklyn design was carried over to the original fast frigate design, in spite of the fact that it was already apparent that these limitations were causing large problems for the 1st Fleet during its offensive against the Dregluk. Once it became clear that the new fast frigates were a problem, a refit was authorized to increase their endurance and fuel tankage.

MB r4 class Missile Boat
The missile boats have been the cornerstone of the defense of the Solar System and the offensive effort against the Dregluk. The original design was very short on endurance and fuel, and was designed to travel to the jump point to Washington from Earth, and its short range and endurance reflected this. When it became clear that a longer ranged version was needed, the LR version of the original missile boat design was developed, and this became the standard for the fleet for many years. However, during the hard campaigning in and around the Houston and Austin systems, a critical flaw in the LR missile boat design became apparent. The class did not have enough maintenance supplies to service its large active sensor or its engines, meaning that if a unit of the class suffered a maintenance failure it was either rendered combat ineffective or it was completely immobilized. Either was obviously undesirable, and so the Admiralty authorized a refit for the missile boat fleet to bring them up to a more serviceable standard. The Admiralty decided to refit all existing missile boats to this standard, including the older short range missile boats squadrons.

The Admiralty has decided to move away from frigates for all new construction, as their frame is now considered too small to hold useful numbers of offensive or defensive missiles. The currently existing frigates will continue to be supported, as they make up a significant percentage of the fleet’s offensive and defensive firepower, but no new frigates are planned. Instead, the larger destroyer class units listed below will replace the older frigates as they become available.
Agamemnon class DE
The ASU pods were merely a stop gap design intended to get ASU capability to the 1st Fleet as quickly as possible. The Admiralty had intended to create a frigate design with ASU capacity, but by the time yard capacity became available, the decision had already been made to move on from frigates to destroyer designs for new production. The Agamemnon class is the result of this decision.

Nimitz class DD
The Nimitz class is intended to replace the venerable Lake class FFG’s. Equipped with better anti-missile defenses and shielding, the Nimitz is more much more capable than the smaller frigate design.
