Some concept of claiming uninhabited systems would be nice as a conflict driver if several empires could claim the same system. Could also lead to the limited war in/for the claimed system, until someone escalates it further.

This is generally the road I would go down, with NPRs claiming certain systems or maybe even just planets and not extending the war beyond that system unless further provoked.

That would be really fun.  As it is, first contact tends to end in them finding my planet and bombing it to hell before I can do anything.  I enjoy solo starts, but I tend to need an unjustifiably large space navy in order to survive them literally bee-lining for me as soon as they spot me.

I mean, its a sound survival strategy on their part, but a rather extreme one.

I was reading the Chat thread on TN Ground Combat, and it occured to me to wonder why Titans aren't vulnerable to meson fire? If they were, it would completely break them, so there has to be a reason; but unlike other ground units they are a relatively huge single target, so the usual 'dispersal' argument doesn't work.

To come full circle in the historical sense* (based on a comment/suggestion in the plausibility thread that I think was in response to this):  Space Empires (at least since IV) handles this by using the same design screen and principles for all platforms.  So ships, satellites, bases, etc. AND ground combat "troops" all have hulls onto which you can stick arbitrary number of components.  So one solution would be to do the same thing to ground units (or at least Titans) that was done to fighters: have a design screen with components that one uses to specialize.  Basically, a Titan would be a fighter that moves on the ground rather than flying in space.  I personally am not keen on this idea since it would throw a whole lot more micromanagement into the ground combat part of Aurora, but it's very much in line with Steve's design philosophy so I'm putting it out there.

John

* - I say full circle because I'm 99% certain that SE draws VERY heavily on StarFire.  I'd never thought of it before, but a lot of Steve's drive for physics consistency between platform types is already there, especially if one were to mod it to have a uniform set of equations behind the component abilities for the various platforms.

Last I saw, Steve won't be working much on things for the next three weeks? Employment and all that.

Generally updates come out when you least expect it.

Just like the Spanish Inquisition, Steve's chief weapon is surprise, fear and surprise
his TWO chief weapons fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency!
er Among his chief weapons are: fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, and a near fanatical devotion to Poker!

um, I'll come in again...

Also remember that for a long time 7.1 was due out "soon" then it was suddenly here, thus "soon" became been and gone in the past. Ergo "soon" has already happened and as such no matter how long we wait for 7.2 it will actually end up as a negative amount of time until "soon" is here.

Probably it will correlate somewhat to his progress reports.  I would assume anyways.
