ground combat
« on: September 02, 2011, 05:19:46 AM »
One of my archeologid planets have been invaded by robots and i'd like to get rid them.

My current military tech is still very basic, i've been concentrated on economics (mining/construction/engines/research) up to now, and was planning to use a laser based design that would also serve a passive sensor role.

However I've just read that lasers don't work in atmospheres ? is that meaning that you can't hit ground units from space with lasers   ?
If that is confirmed what weapons would be recommended, excluding missiles ?

Second point, my ground forces have taken pretty serious hits and I was wondering how replacement battalions work , I though you could replenish other battlaions using them but can't figure how.

The only weapons that aren't effected by atmosphere (as far as I am aware) are meson cannons and missles. However, if the planet you are on has an atmosphere less than 1atm, you can still hit things on the ground, your weapons will just have a reduced effect.

Replacement battalions are automatic, just have them in the same place as the wounded battalion.

Replacement battalions are automatic, just have them in the same place as the wounded battalion.

But it's a gradual effect.  The replacement battalion(s) will slowly go down while the combat battalions are slowly replenished.

yep that helped, thanks.

In the end I ended up winning the fight, but I'm very surprised.
At the beginning I had only an engineer brigade on that planet, roaming 150+ installations, looking for anything salvageable.
They ended up awakening some robots so I brought  real troops (4 battalions).
Then, I think some troop transport dropped some reinforcements, total was probably about 10 marine battalions, and they were devastating the limited troops I had brought here

After a tactical retreat, I invaded back  with 2 full regiments, and about 6 months later, I eliminate the last ennemies.
What's really a surprise (and may be a bug), is that a whole lot (21) of troop transports then surrender to me from everywhere in the galaxy !

That's a bug, the only ships that should surrender are the ones within the system of the colony that you captured. And even then, fairly certain this type of NPR shouldn't surrender at all.

I haven't came across it before, wouldn't hurt to report it in the master thread.

I thought this was fixed a while ago and I can't see from the code how it could happen. Are you definitely using v5.52?
