Jump Drive Size Requirements
« on: December 26, 2018, 11:18:13 AM »
Can you have several small ships with jump drives making them combine ther size so a larger ship can go thrue?

Might not whant to build 1 s50 hut maby 3 s30 due to time constraints and then have this 3ships work together to have ships jump.

No, it will be the largest jump drive only.

Frankly, just not having to use a ship at least as large as the jumping ship is a boon.

It was a pain to have to pad my civilian jump ships to meet the transit size requirement for even a single cargo hold carrying freighter. It was less so for combat ships, as in that case you could just make it an armed self escorting jump ship, but still.

I think jump drives deserve some buff for very large sizes (Non-linear scaling) and especially a reduction in development RP. For large jump drives may be cheaper to research 1-2 additional JD efficiency levels first instead of developing a single component only...

But what's the problem with that?

It encourages to use smaller ship sizes at low tech OR alternatively, if you insist on using larger ship sizes, to keep researching. That seems to me to be a valid choice to make.

The problem is that the costs are prohibitive. Expensive is fine, but right now it ends up with impossible. Shipyards already encourage smaller ships, and smaller jump drives are already more affordable, but if you get a 60kt military yard up and running, you should be able to develop a jump drive for it.

I'm sorry but I still don't understand your problem. It's cheap and easy to grow shipyards. Huge sensors are also expensive to research and build, like Jump Engines.

A 50HS sensor is huge. At 50HS Jump Drive at Efficiency 5 can move 12500t, which is while not the smallest warship, it is in no way huge either.
If it were by me, I would give ALL components a non-linear (square root?) dependence on size, as for many projects <100 RP it is essentially a negligible speed bump, and only the large engines and sensors really cost component research time.

It's not that hard to research more efficiency rather than large jump drives so that is what you do. I don't think this is a huge problem.

I mainly find it weird that small drives are so cheap (in terms of research).  It should probably be more of a V shaped curve, with some nominal size where the drive is relatively easy to design, then it goes up if you try to make a super tiny one, or if you try to make a super massive one.

I do agree that research cost should not scale up linearly though for larger sizes.  It shouldn't be easy to make some massive drive, but it shouldnt be that hard either.
