Title: Less than max capacity cargo hauling?
Post by: Adseria on October 02, 2018, 02:11:19 PM
So, I've been trying to use civilian shipping lines to carry terraformers around, but now I have 1. 2 terraformers on one planet and 0. 8 on another.  I've tried to solve the problem using my own freighters, but they always load their max capacity of 0. 4 terraformers (they have 50k ton capacity).  I tried using the options under the orders section on the TF screen to tell them to only take 0. 2 of a terraformer, but they won't listen, so I just end up moving those 0. 4 terraformers back and forth.  The civilian shipping lines do the same thing.  Is there any way to tell the freighter to only loadto half capacity, or do I need to build a smaller freighter?

'SM Mode' exists to fix the result of such problems, but it won't stop them from happening again.

With your current ship designs, it will be very hard to prevent.  The easiest solution may be to just live with always moving Terraformers in pairs.  Otherwise, you'll need to resize your cargo ship hold capacity to exactly 0.5 or 0.25 or 0.20, etc. of a Terraforming Installation.

Also, please note changing civilian contracts/demands in the middle of them carrying them out is almost guaranteed to end up with odd fractions of installations all over the place -- including still on board freighters which no have no intention of ever unloading them anywhere.

So, short version, build smaller ships? You could have just said that. . .

I didn't change the contract.

Or larger ones.  Freighters that can fit 1.00 terraforming Installations at a time will also not have this problem.

There may actually be a stopgap solution - first load up a single automine or some other 25kt installation, and then order your freighter to pick up a terraformer. As far as I understand, cargo holds aren't limited to carrying only one type of installation, so this should work.

Edit : You can use literally anything as ballast.

If I'm at the point where I'm worrying about losing a single installation, do you honestly think I have the capability of building a ship that weighs 125kt for the cargo hold alone? My biggest shipyard is only 100kt.

Great idea.  I guess all it would take is a single ton of a mineral to "fill" an entire half of the hold.

Maybe not.   I just tried it and now I have a freighter with a 50kt hold that's carrying 50002t of stuff.   So much for that idea! Guess it does need to be an installation.

12,500 units of minerals will take up the same space as a single 25,000 t installation. PDC sections should also work, but if you production is really that stressed I wouldn't recommend it.

Edit : Aurora has some quirky rounding. That may be a bug though.

Yeah, I realised that it could be possible to load the other installation (I chose a mine, because that was what I had on the planet), then load the terraformer components, and then unload the mine.   That way, you don't lose much production from the mine, and you still only have 0.  2 of a terraformer on board.

EDIT: Of course, I only realised this AFTER the freighter had already set off.  Luckily, I decided to do the 0. 2 first, so it was going back anyway, but I guess I still lost a couple of weeks of production from that one mine.  Still, at least now I know what to do next time.

That works too.

Edit : A few WEEKS? How far are you shipping?
