How to use captured components?
« on: August 14, 2014, 03:17:29 AM »
I found some inertial fusion engines and I´d like to put them to use.
How to I do this?

You can never really 'use' them in a sense of building them into designs, because that would require you to have the technology entry, in which case you also could just build them yourself.

You can however use them to research the background engine technology. To do this, just unload the components on a planet where you want the research to be done. It is important to chose the right planet, since every generated tech points will only stay on this planet and no other will benefit from the boost until you successfully reach a new tech level in the area.
To get those tech points, head to the building window of the planet in question, click to show components/missiles/fighters and such, and then select the component you want to be researched and press the disassemble button. Your message log will then (aside from resources) show you a couple of tech points that had been harvested in a corresponding area. You will need many many components to make the jump to inertial fusion however.

A tip: For rapid tech advance, your best bet is capturing enemy ships instead of destroying and hoping for undamaged loot. You can repair the captured vessels, then take them apart and instantly gain most of their components. To capture, send marines(-best choice) from drop modules to land on an enemy ship. Then wait many minutes until they are done.

Actually, you can use them on your designs directly, though you will be limited by the number of components you have. So if you found 20 fusion engines, you could build 4 ships with 5 each, etc.

To do this you need to untick the 'Own Tech Only' checkbox in the Design View page of the ship design page. This should make these kinds of 'captured/salvaged/found' components show up. After this just design the ship normally, and then make sure you have those components on the planet with the shipyard when you order it built.

Oho, in Aurora you never stop learning new things, no matter how many games played. :)

Interesting, so you could make a whole set of very efficient little scout ships pretty early in a game with only one lucky find.

yep, or you could use a lot of these engines to construct an unique formidable warship

If you choose to take the components salvaged apart you want to do that at your main research planet.  Also to get a 1 level upgrade in technology used in the component takes around 40 components.  If there are several levels of tech between what you have currently and what is in the components then you get the next level you have not researched.  If you wait to research the intervening levels then you will get more from the disassembly.

Good Luck and have fun

Thank you. This was exactly what I needed.
