I accidentally clicked on of the sub-pulse length buttons on the system map screen, and now I cannot increment by more than a day at a time; e. g.  i click the 30 days button, and time goes forward by only a day.

I don't see any way to undo what I did; even selecting "automatic" doesn't seem to help.

What do I do?

Click the 5 second sub-pulse button?

I don't understand how that is meant to help; I now get warning messages saying that there will be a huge number of sub-pulses in the increment (which I never got before this happened) and the time still barely advances.

I don't think these are the normal interruptions caused by activities of NPRs, because it's happening consistently and it only started when I accidentally clicked the 1-day button under sub-pulse length.

Do you have "automated turns" selected near the top?

I do not, nor did I before this mishap.

Also, selecting it does not seem to have any impact on the behavior, i. e.  the time increments by 2 hours when I click the 5-day increment button, with sub-pulse set to "Automatic. "

The major reason the sub-pulse would be shorter is there is an NPR v. NPR fight, there is a potential NPR v. you interception.

Hit Ctrl-F3 and bring up the Event Log. Increment time and see if there is any messages in there.

No enemies, but from the event log, I found out that I had a task group with a single looped order "move to earth," and this was screwing things up.   (Although I don't understand why this doesn't happen more often, if ANY event at all can cause the turn to be cut short)

Thanks a lot, the event logged helped; all is well.

This thread http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php/topic,1839.0.html explains why and how increments will be cut short.
