Hi!
My name´s Carl Martin and I´m a new player (obviously).
The game looks really interesting but complicated. I´ve read through most of the tutorials, but it´s a bit hard to do with all those broken links, but I think I manage to understand the basics of the game.
But I got a, for me, major problem.
I don´t know what ship component I have to add to my designs to make them functional, or even better, competent.
Small surveys are not so much a problem, since the tutorials cover them pretty well. And small warships I´m on my way to understand.
But yesterday I tried to design a carrier and fighters to them and I was completely blank. Hanger bay I understand, but then what?
So, I wonder if there is some tutorial that covers the required components for the most common ship types?
Like for example:
A Geological Survey vessels requires:
*Engine
*Geo. surv. sensors
*Active sensor
et c.

Your best bet is probably to read some of the after action reports as they cover a lot of the thinking behind ship design. My own campaign at the moment includes a lot of ship design and one of the nations involved is very carrier-focused.

Well, keep in mind that these ships are of a high tech level, but the components required will be
similiar, even with lower tech. EDIT: I do tend to play with maintainance off. If you play with it on,
you will need more Engineering sections to bring down the failure rate. If I was playing with it on,
this carrier wouldn't make it out of the drydock. :)

Now, a carrier requires most of the things other ships do. As to weapons, that is up to you, though I
add only some anti-missle defenses. The main thing is the hanger bays. Each fighter weighs a certain
amount, and that takes up hanger space. Keep the fighters as far under 500 ton as you can. This will
allow fighter factories to build them, and keep up their speed. These are highly advanced, but you can
get effective fighters even with lower tech, if you plan carefully. These are just examples, but they do
show some of the basic systems. Hope it can help you. :)

For Carriers the answer you will get is - it depends :o
There are however, some questions that you can ask that will help you shape your carrier design.
Assumption: All of the following will be constrained by the size of the available carrier hull you can build.
Lets start with how the fighters will be supported by the carrier:
Is this a true carrier with embarked squadrons? The carrier is the source of fuel for the fighters, so you need extra fuel tanks to make sure that you have fuel for both the fighters and the carrier.
Will you be carrying missile armed fighters? If yes then magazines are required. The number of magazines will be driven by how many times you want to rearm the fighters.
How many fighters do you intend to carry? Use hangers and boat bays to provide the required space.
Moving onto the carrier itself:
Is the carrier intended to operate with the fleet? If so then the number of engines fitted must allow for this.
Do you intend to expose the carrier to enemy fire? If so then up the armour and add some shields (if you are a shield using race).
Will the carrier always have scout support? If the answer is no then fit a search sensor that allows you to detect ships far enough away to use the maximum range of your fighters.
Will the carrier rely on consorts for defence? If no then install race weapons to taste.
Will the carrier have point defence? If yes then install CIWS to taste.
Do you intend to operate a task force HQ from this ship? If so then add a flag bridge.
The chances are that you will end up designing a fast unarmoured hanger bay with copious magazines and no defences. Well that's what I do anyway ;D
This is how I think about my carriers, I'm sure that you will get lots of other opinions. ;)

It seems that there are no short cuts to take in this game.
I´ll be looking in to your designs and try to learn as much as I can from them.
All those weapon requirements (tech and additional modules) are a mess in my mind now. But I quess there is no way around it then trying, make error, go back to the forum and reread the proper threads and go back and try again. :)
One question, Steve in your NATO Starting Force the Enterprise Carrier are a 48000 ton build.
My starting Navy shipyards have a capacity of around 10000, so I assume you didn´t care about your own building capacity when you created and build it for your starting setup? So, my question is, is it generally wise to design and create such ships for your staring setup?

Heh. How very true! ;D
Carrier design depends on how you plan to use the carrier, as welchbloke mentions.
My Escort Carrier, for example, is designed to escort fleet ships or freighters, and
as such, she has little offensive punch. She carries twenty Nero Intercepters for dealing
with ASMs, or small enemy ships that might, say, intercept a convoy. Four Fighter/Bombers
carrying six Harpoon ASM each, provide some offensive punch. The four of them can fire 24
missiles, which is 4 more than my Heavy Cruiser broadside, so it was effective the one time
they were in battle against Precursers.
The Assault Carrier is designed to assault Jump Points, and as such, though she carries the
exact same strike groups as my Fleet Carriers, she has strong anti-missile defenses, VERY heavy
armour and shields.
Have fun experimenting, and check the ship design forum. I do believe a saw at least two threads on
carrier design, and fighters.

I was just thinking I'd post "my experience is that I end up putting as few extras as possible (e.g. no Flag Bridge) on my carrier designs" when I saw this line :) The only differences I have are: 1) copious fuel too (which I assume was just a typing oversight) and 2) I put armor-3 on my missile combatants and carriers, in case they're under long-range missile fire that they can mostly handle, but some leakers get through.

Yes, it seems we have similar design philosophies; the only difference is that despite saying that I don't have much armour, I've just rechecked my designs and I'm running with armour 5 and 6. I think my paranoia that despite working on the 'nothing will ever get within range of the carriers' philosophy something will catch me with my trousers down led to me adding more armour ;D

Apologies in advance if I am wrong but I , for one , would love to see ship designs that do not appear at first sight to have produced using the SM mode , which I assume the vessels were , looking at the size and components used for these vessels. If one were to play the game as it is meant to be played it would take many , many years to produce a shipyard large enough to build these vessels with the same time span for the research into components.
Please can we see designs which have been researched and built without help from the SM with a note as to how long into the game it has taken for the design and construction to come to fruition.
These are my thoughts on the matter , as through reading the various threads I know many people use the SM mode as a build shortcut though I would never want to use the SM mode of play. To me it just seems to negate all the uncertainty of play if one was to just instantly give oneself the very best equipment without the sweat and toil of the problems in producing these designs and builds.

Your point about mentioning how far into a game a particular design comes from (probably along with starting population size and RP) is a very good one. However, none of these designs really require SM. I know when you start playing a year seems like a long time, but significant change in technology happens over the span of decades in this game. SCAM drives are pretty advanced, but most of the rest of the stuff in this thread is 'early-mid game' tech.

Damn, that's a very nice example, Hawkeye, and should be moved to the wiki. Having poked through most of the forum recently, I've seen post after post that could have used just this sort of reply. The only real improvement would b a 'lessons learned' comment between the before and after. Something along the line of "The intent of the initial design was X, these things happened so we tweaked the design this way, or revamped it to do Y instead".

One question, Steve in your NATO Starting Force the Enterprise Carrier are a 48000 ton build.
My starting Navy shipyards have a capacity of around 10000, so I assume you didn´t care about your own building capacity when you created and build it for your starting setup? So, my question is, is it generally wise to design and create such ships for your staring setup?
Generally people only spawn in ships that they can actually make when starting the game, in a lot of the recorded games the starting conditions for the empires involved vary a lot from a default start, which is why you see some of those massive builds. This is especially true when part of the point of the story is a comparison of different design techniques.
I think that a respectable starting carrier can be made as low as 10000 tons assuming that it's nothing but a carrier and supply depot. Keeping the sensors and defenses on the rest of the fleet can really keep the mass down.
I generally start my carriers out at 16ktons to 20ktons, but I'm quite a bit of a turtler so my tech is generally pretty good before I start spreading my wings more.
