ok forget automatic but perhaps some base templates that allow the player to choose a degree of automation.  Say 5 chooseable map functions that u can specifiy and then the program will arrange new star systems according to that choice

Better not. It's an excellent feature that the player can arrange the galaxy map anyway s/he prefers.

The ultra short version: shift+click to move them.  Then save your map to keep them that way.  (I struggled with this initially too)
