Base gravitational variance has been bumped up to stunning 90% in 6.0 so it's possible that Steve did remove the research to bump it further.
He'd have to answer that himself as I can't check if it's available in my game right now.
EDIT: Yup got around to checking, Gravitational variance is still on the list if you select "all research" but it's not active/researchable. Makes sense, otherwise with the current base setting you could have colonies of millions living on asteroids the size of a large house.

Turmoil's tech tree hasn't got as far as biology/genetics yet. And in 6. 00 and 6. 10 (the only versions I've tried), not even SpaceMaster mode can access Genome Sequence: Base Gravity, because the "Create" and "Instant" buttons are only enabled when the filter is set to "Available" and Genome Sequence: Base Gravity is never available
