This is why I always put emergency cryogenic modules on almost all of my ship designs. Sure, they take up an extra 50 tonnes, but you'll be able to rescue crew without causing your life support to fail.  It's what the module is for.

What happens when you drop off a rescued crew?

I know while transporting them they seem to take joy in destroying my crew quarters (due to overcrowding) much to my joy when I set the remains of my fleet to overhaul before dropping off the rescued crew members (so many life support failures... so many...).
