A troop transport bay can handle 1 normal combat battalion (not a construction engineer brigade).  A small troop transport bay handles 1 company (currently only marines).  You can use the company size ones for boarding parties to attack enemy ships.  A drop pod has the same nomenclature so a small drop pod allows for 1 company to be combat dropped.  It helps for making things like assault shuttles or troop carrying FAC's.

If you look at the ground unit construction tab (F2) there is a column for the unit size.  Most are 5 space units.  On the ship design screen (F5) the rating of the bay is the unit size it can hold.

Hello, I was wondering what the difference between a Troop Transport Bay and a Small Troop Transport Bay is besides . 8 battalion capacity? If each GU need 1 transport bay (besides engineers) what is the use of the small one?
