The first attempts of building a battle worthy vessel, these shoestring-and-gum projects have been hastily cobbled together.

German engineers sweated blood to make it faster than anything else humans had put out by 1899.

The very first design that anyone built. Its engine does not enjoy boosting, thus allowing it a slightly longer range which will be handy once orbital movement takes Mars further away from Earth. The powerful plasma carronade is the mightiest weapon in known space.
Russian Krivak

Russians managed to be the second power to put a ship out but they had to cut corners. The conventional reactor takes up more space than the more advanced versions that the British and Germans use. Tomska being bigger and more powerful than Whitehouse-Lambert means that the Krivak could, in theory, dictate the range to Tribal - but the minimal range of of its Railgun means it'll have to get into knife-fighting range.
The corvettes of the other seven powers are still on the blueprint stage.

Anyone else imagine the 1890s Conventional reactor on the Russian Corvette being a Steam Engine

Well, considering that the more modern Pressurised Water Reactors on the other ships are in fact nuclear powered steam engines, the Russian one probably just runs on coal or diesel. :p
-
Coal pellets soaked in Sorium! :P That's how I imagine it working with Conventional engines and reactors - it's coal/gas/LOX mixed with Sorium.
-
Ten to thirty percent (by weight) Sorium sprayed over the coal before burning, depending on tech.
-
Soaking coal in Sorium. Brilliant.
This thread is now a trainwreck though, so let's fix that. :)
I like those super tiny designs. My warships usually start at 6000+ tons since I try to cram too much stuff into them.
But I have to ask, why didn't you make them FAC's? If you remove the bridge (50 tons) both the Blücher and Tribal drop to below 1000 tons which would make them a FAC which doesn't need a bridge. Maybe that opens up a ton or two for a bit more fuel, armor or whatever you can squeeze in.
-
Because Garfunkel's 1890s Aurora game doesn't belive in (or even know about) FACs yet. But fairly soon I expect the French Marine Nationale to put forth some sort of 'New School' thinking of small motor gun boats to challenge the Martians.

Initially, size is that because then the naval shipyards can start building them almost out of the gate. If I was playing this campaign in VB6, I would have gone for 1,500 ton corvettes and in my notes, that is actually the size for corvettes. But then Steve changed how Continuous Capacity Build works so I went as close to 1k as I could. Rest of it is as Father Tim said - the corvettes will grow to be around 2k size over time and, once engine boosting gets faster, 501-999 ton gunboats will indeed make an appearance. This is because I also want to emulate - at least to some extent - the evolution of real navies.

Handsome Jack and the Hyperion Corporation thank Mr. Garfunkel for his antiquated ship designs and encourage further research and development into 'antique' technologies.

Perhaps not completely in Garfunkel's theme, but I created some old school cowboy ships for my recent campaign that seemed somewhat relevant:
