(I haven't abandoned the old one, just jumped into this for some more conventional fiction. no further details about the setting at this point, more previews potentially forthcoming)

It's a mystery, a guessing game... why are they devoting all of their industry to converting mines to automated? Maybe they're preparing for a sort of reverse-Y2K, where all the humans go crazy at the turn of the millennium and the machines take over. Maybe someone has gone back in time to warn them about COVID, and they're automating all their industry so they can quarantine indefinitely. Stay tuned to find out...

There had better be a 15-part Mining Conference or else it is a complete waste of our time.

Though I suspect that the real clue is in the 1998 completion date which suggests that this scenario has an early post-Cold War start date, so we may be getting our hot C# NATO vs. Soviet action Steve has been so callously denying us soon.
