Is there any real reason to divide your empire into multiple sectors or your navy into multiple task forces? Seems like you'd just want to have your best commanders in charge of one big one.

Multiple Sectors: The level of sector capital required goes something like (but not exactly) the square of its radius in jumps. So that means that it's more efficient to have a bunch of little sectors than one big one.
Hmmmm just realized that the "more efficient" statement actually depends on how the number of occupied systems grows with sector radius, which depends on the way jump points are generated, and average occupancy. Anyway, my experience has been that huge sectors are prohibitively expensive.
Multiple Fleets: The fleet bonuses only apply when the a TG is in the same system as its TF command group. Since the command group can't be in multiple systems at the same time, that leads to ....

Cutting him up and putting him on multiple ships?

Regarding sectors.
The bonus the sector governor supplies is reduced by a percentage each ring out from the sector capital.

I never noticed this before, but it doesn't look like you can haul a sector command facility to another planet. I build 5 on Earth and only wanted the 3 to stay there, moving the other two to two separate hub system on two different warp chains.

There a few installations like this. Commercial space ports, finical centers, build PDC. There may be others.
