Title: Modable?
Post by: darkedone02 on February 06, 2010, 10:17:10 PM
I recently got news of this game, and heard that it is like Dwarf Fortress, but in space. Since this game was made by a different developer then Toady the Great, I am wondering if this game has one thing that Dwarf fortress has, and that is the power of easy modding, does this game has that component?

Modding will be great, and depending on how many people downloaded your game and like it, will attract more people here to play this game, not only that but the ability to make major mods off of this game, making this game live longer. So I am wondering, does this game allow us to make mods? if not, will it be add into future versions of Aurora?

There is no modding in the classical sense. But no two players will ever play the same game. Tech decisions, officers, system generation, NPRs, Precursors. It all adds up to one game that is unique each time you play it.

Well it's not modable as such, but there is a page on how to add some flavor text on the wiki (http://aurorawiki.pentarch.org/index.php?title=Modding)

I have modified that page to remove the database password.  Steve has repeatedly asked people not to publish said password.

See Steve's post here
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1931&start=60#p19512 (http://aurora.pentarch.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1931&start=60#p19512)

Erik (or someone else who has more "control over" the wiki), can you remove the history to get rid of it properly.  If Steve has to change the database password, then I doubt SAUpgrade will work for taking your game to later versions, which means it'll be a lot of manual work.

This is the type of thing I was referring to when I mentioned about the DB not being the whole story :)

Commander Name Themes need to be set up in the code as well as different commander themes use different naming conventions. Without setting the code as well, you are limited as to what you can do with commander names. That is why I have a set interface for adding new commanders rather than modding the DB directly. Again, I warn against modding the DB. if you do then any bugs are suspect and you really, really need to remember everything you have done to the DB and include that with any bug reports. Once I realise that someone is modding the DB without mentioning it then, as you can imagine, bug reports from that person will be taken less seriously.

Hey, you're pretty new here, you weren't to know.  Might be worth sticking a note about this in the New Players section.

It's a long standing thing going back to Aurora's roots with Starfire Assistant. As you can appreciate, Steve wants to keep some control over his baby.   :)

well. as i once say... this game won't last long then. We will encounter bugs, with or without mods... so why point it out when we go report it to the right thread/person for him to fix it?

This game has lasted around 5 years. So yes, I can see that it is quite in danger of failing and the community drying up and dispersing.
