Title: Long intra-system moves
Post by: sandman662 on March 20, 2010, 03:01:18 PM
Aside from using the existing LP jumps within a system, how would you travel to a companion star or planet that is FAAAAR from the central star?  I keep forgetting that one of the planets is a long distance out and I keep sending a survey ship to it and it runs out of fuel about half way and it is a pain in the but getting a tanker out to it.

*edit:   I guess I am asking if it is possible to build LP points or some other means of using jump engines within a system?

Use hyperdrive which enables you to travel 10x faster with same fuel usage. You can specify if engine is hyper-capable on engine design screen.

Ah, that is what that is for :)

Thanks!

Be advised that using hyperdrive turns off your sensors for the journey duration, so you'll be completely blind. Not so much of problem for civilian ships though

EDIT:

Ooops, forgot to mention that each star has hyper-limit zone where you cannot use hypderdrive. You can toggle display of such zones on display tab in main system view, by toggling "hyper limit".

I do wonder if perhaps far-out systems should have their own gravsurvey points, possibly their own jump points.  Even with hyper engines, some of them are a really long trip!

If so, I'd allow generous odds that the two components of the system have jump connections to each other.

So far, I have yet to see two far systems connected by LP.

I wonder. Would civilians or survey ships automatically investigating bodies/locations use hyper drives properly on their own?

I don't think so. There really ought to be a "use hyperdrive whenever possible" toggle somewhere, but I don't think there is.

Can you fight in Hyperdrive, if you got faster ships with sensors?
Also, would a Hyperdrive allow my Fighters to go 15x lightspeed?
Basically, does it increase engine power or flat out speed?
And will civilians try to get there and then run out of fuel?

No.
Yes.
Speed.
Yes.

So far, I have yet to see two far systems connected by LP.

I have seen companion stars have LP's a couple of times.  It was then that I understood what they were for.  Up to that point, I was like, "What are LPs?  Why are they there?"  Then, when I saw one far out at a star, I figured it out and though it made sense.  Then I started to notice that not all "far out bodies (stars and/or planets) had the LP's :(

If there are hyper limits around the stars, can you still jump to the companion star by just saying use the hyper engines and, while in the hyper limit, you just go regular speed and then automatically switch to the 10x speed once you leave the hyper limit?

Yes, but it's not automatic - you have to set waypoints.

I think this is a really good idea, even for military ships.  As it stands, you have to do a lot of fiddling with waypoints every time a hyper-capable ship crosses the hyper-boundary.  If this flag were present, a ship could just enter hyperdrive on any pulse where it finds itself outside the hyper limit, and leave hyperdrive on any pulse when it's about to reenter the hyper limit.

You should put this suggestion into the official Suggestions thread.
