So I'll be happily playing away, and for some reason, when I try to advance the game, it will only advance it a few hours. This can happen when trying to advance the game either 1,5 or 30 days. Any advice on what could be causing this, either something I'm doing (or not doing) in-game or a bug? I'm using version 4.91, and have recently discovered 5.14, so will be upgrading to that as soon as I'm done posting this.

People keep reporting this as a bug. IT IS NOT. What is happening is that some interrupt involving your forces or NPR's is occurring and ending the time cycle at that point. Check the event log if something relevant to youis happening it will be there and you can react otherwise , just keep advancing time while the NPR's dealw ith things
-
Ahh ok, thanks for that. The NPR's must be be doing something then, as I have no other systems surveyed except for my home system
-
If the constant clicking of a turn button gets annoying, you can turn on the automated turns checkbox on the system map and click one, at which point the game will begin calculating and not stop until something happens to impact you.
-
If you play in SM mode (I always do), then you get SM Only messages that tell you an NPR is probably fighting somewhere.

Not necessarily, there are some events you can generate which will interupt without leaving the solar system so check your events log

What's the advantage of playing in SM mode all the time?

I think when you explore, if you are not in SM mode then you need to enter the SM password anyway. Plus you get to see why your 5-day advance stopped at only 1 day. So I figure I just play in SM mode, since it isn't hurting anything. You still cannot see the NPRs.

This section of the tutorial explains how the time increment system works and why you will sometimes get shortened increments.

I managed to track down the problem using the event update window. My survey ship had run out of fuel as I stupidly forgot to keep an eye on it.
Note to self: keep an eye on ships so this doesn't happen again
Started a new game. I really didn't want to have to design a refuelling ship as I'm still learning. The learning curve of reminds me of Eve Online, and I thought that was complex.

Like this?

Yeah, Auroras a tough Nut.
But not as time intensive.

I think you got your PotBS and LotRO colors mixed. I found Pirates to be fairly easy to play and level up. LotRO on the other hand continues to surprise me with things after 3 years. (and sadly, I've played all 4 of those games).
-
Especially since POTBS only has like 3 elements to it, so its learning curve takes about an hour I unfortunately am in the smae boat as Erik

I got that picture off the Internet, I assure you I have no idea.
I've played WoW for 3 Months and Eve for 14 days, and that was it.

Yeah, that picture sums up the learning curve for Eve pretty well. It can be a real bastard, not just in terms of learning the game but also the fact that any losses a player incurs are real, and it can take a lot of time to retrieve those losses. I should know, I lost a lot of ships because I didn't have the skills to fly them properly back when my character was young, wide-eyed and impatient to fly the big shiny ships that made things go boom in a big way.
But back to Aurora. I'm having an absolute ball. I've colonized Mars, which is being terraformed. Current population is 710,000. Luna and Venus are being mined (Venus is still to be colonized due to it's high cost, along with some other planets and moons). The Bowen Transport Corporation is moving colonists from Earth to Mars, and the occasional infrastructure. I still have lots to see, exploit, survey, colonize and if I'm lucky, blow up. Fingers crossed I have many more game years of play left before I run into a hostile NPR (if I run into any at all).
