Title: Fractured Earth Campaign - Comments
Post by: Elouda on December 13, 2010, 10:32:52 AM
Topic for dicussion and comments on the campaign. Critism of both my writing and playstyle welcome, along with any ideas or suggestions for the game.

Please keep all comments to this thread so as to not congest the actual story topics. I will put a note at the end of the last post in each peice stating when its okay to post in those too; but this should be your first point of contact.

Thank you,
Elouda

I found one thing to be a bit jarring.

In the beginning, the Koreans attempted a missile strike on Seoul (which is a big, stationary target) that failed; indicating an expectedly low level of missile tech.

Then they got missile strikes through the air defenses of a carrier squadron that could hit small(ish), mobile targets.

Why didn't NK use Chinese tech for the first strike?

Though not yet apparent, the Chinese missiles were 'sold' with the condition of being operated by Chinese leaders, and this ensured they were used only for their intended purpose - preventing interefence in China sphere of influence. The rest of the war was up to the Koreans using the more conventional weapons provided.

I suppose I should have been clearer on this, but it's going to be the least of US's worries soon.

Apologies for the slow start btw, but I want to get the background out of the way before I begin posting Aurora events.

With the release of 5.30, I will be restarting this campaign, and also altering the starting conditions a little. I've been a little reluctant to play much (only made it to Sept 2045 right now, almost done with the next 2 year section) because I was sort of expecting 5.30, and knew I would want to restart. I will also be changing the format somewhat, Im not too keen on just listing events, and want to try something more involved. More details to follow once I get everything set up again.

I only just noticed this story and I'm looking forward to more.  I always love playing/reading of near-future scenarios with multiple factions on Earth.  It's exciting.  It's the reason why that one campaign Steve did, the Trans-Newtonian one, is probably my favorite of his so far.

Thanks for the comment!  8)

I've finished planning the new setup and am working on getting it sorted ingame. I've pushed the start date back by 6 years to 2048, and the powers are correspondingly more powerful. lll be putting up new fleet lists soon; Ive cleared out the old ones for now.

I decided to go back and actually play the whole thing out from 2028 onwards. So far the game has reached 2037, so Im hoping to have the first section for 2030-2035 up the weekend. Please check the background and rules post for some updates as well.

Hey, RL sorta got in the way, I'm looking at starting a new campaign in the near future though, not sure if I want to wait for 5.50 or not before starting though.

I will either be Earth based like this one, or one idea I've been toying around with is having 4-5 human 'splinter' colonies from various powerblocs getting cut off and striking out on their own.

I've restarted this one with the same factions and setup wth v5.52. Assuming nothing goes wrong Ill have the first few years out within the week. The background post has been updated with some changes to the rules.

A question for those who have been reading regarding the style;

Right now as my focus is on getting to the 'interesting bit', the reports are literally just 'as it happens' readouts of significant events for each empire. I understand these can be a little dull the read, as they lack character, and I hope to remedy that once we get past 2040.

Im considering altering my style at that point, and would like to know what you'd be most interested in;

1) Random snapshots written from various peoples perspectives every few months (grunt here, scientist there, admiral here); something of an attempt to emulate the style used by procyon in his wonderful Nemesis campaign
2) Faction reports with deeper character involvement, expanding on who decided what and why and why this was designed that way instead of that, etc
3) One or two 'main characters' perspectives, most likely people of note within one or two nations militaries

In addition, I could continue the 'event log' style I do right now to back the new stuff up.

Regarding these 'logs', I would be curious to know if you find that there is;

-Not enough detail regarding things, ie you'd like to know every single civilian ship launched, etc, etc.
-A suitable amount of detail.
-Too much detail, and should only focus on the big things, maybe even reduced to monthly reports.

Any opinions on these two questions would be welcome, as it would give me some direction in how to present the events to you.

Thank you,
Elouda

I like the story elements over all the details so your first option might be your best one, and just focus on the important events.

I quite like the "Diary report" type of AAR with the story elements short and based on the events. But that's just me. Still if you want to branch out I suggest trying different styles until you find one you enjoy.

Just wondering if you're still playing this or if it's dead or what. I very much enjoy it and hope you continue.
