Title: Explaining the different weapon types?

Hello, I'm new to Aurora and loving the game so far! However, I don't know what the different weapon types do.  How are lasers different from Gauss cannons and all the other weapons? Sorry if this is too general, but I really need to know.  Thanks in advance!
