Since I am not a
geek sci-fi fan I really never knew where certain parts of the game drew from (if they did).
Namely, I want to know about the following:
Star Swarm
Invaders
Jump points, ships and engines
Also, what would "jump points" be? Some sort of gravity well? And what would jump gates be, some kind of stable wormhole?
Unrelated, but Steve must've been bored as hell one day. He added a Hippy theme, it is honestly hilarious when you get attacked by a fleet of "Mountain Rain" class warships.

Read the Starfire books by David Weber and Steve White (not our Steve, just very similar names), which are essentially campaign writeups in the Starfire game (Weber wrote the 3rd edition rules).

IIRC, these were present in Starfire Assistant (the progenitor program to Aurora) - I think I remember fighting a Hippy race a looong time ago. Steve posted a mini-bio somewhere on the boards which discusses this history.

The Invaders to me feel like the Andromedans from SFB.
The Star Swarm could be any bio-engineered type antagonist from numerous sources.

Steve did mention that in a thread a long while back. That's the only inspiration he's mentioned for a specific race that I recall. He has mentioned Babylon 5 as a general inspiration in the past.
-
The Invaders were inspired by the Andromedans from Star Fleet Battles. They have the same role of powerful, extra-galactic menace. Their weapons are completely different from the Andromedans in terms of mechanics but they have the same feel of bring very different than normal 'galactic' weapons. Their shields and the Andromedan PA Panels share some similarities.
The Star Swarm are something I dreamt up myself, although there may be something lurking in my subconscious that inspired them, perhaps from a old sci-fi novel or game

To me there is a lot of Babylon 5 elements that jump into my mind, the gate system being one.
The star swam like 'the darkness' or Star Trek Voyager and the Species 678 or what ever the number was, the invaders remind me more of Stargate and the Replicates, some type of mechaniod attack.
The ruins remind we of Stargate.
But I am sure there is a thousand other books and movies that can filter in your mind as you play.

I'm just glad Steve never read the Vang series by Christopher Rowley, that would have been ugly.... ;)

I always liked that series, and wished he wrote more.

I always thought the Star Swarm were inspired by Tyranids (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyranids) and what we have seen in games so far is the precursor to a vast Hive Fleet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyranid_Hive_Fleets)..
-
Just be glad we didn't end up with Arachnids, considering Steves history with them

Our ground forces wouldn't stand a chance, if we're talking about the same Arachnids.

I have considered additional Star Swarm ship types. I hadn't linked them to a Tyranid-style invasion but that is an interesting idea.

SEE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE?

I've made a note in my diary, it simply says 'Bugger' :)

Tyranid ships should de-terraform planets with liquid hydrospheres.

They should also infect planets and cause them to rise up against their rulers :) Maybe we should have a different kind of large precursor ship that appears at random and spawns Genestealers :)

Genetic modification module? =P

How about putting a chance of some advanced tech on these 'hulks' so folks don't just blow them apart on sight?

I don't know how you get your hands on advanced tech, but 'boom-BOOM-salvage' is the approved Alzarian approach.

Interesting idea. A huge, derelict, ancient alien ship that moves slowly across a system from deep space. Extremely powerful passive defences but you can attempt to board it and learn its secrets. While exploring, perhaps with a Xeno team, there is the chance of predatory alien lifeforms emerging from hiding to attack your team and its marine defenders. The longer your team spends on the ship, the more chance there is of learning some random alien technology. Definite possibilities. The main thing would be to make the defensive technology so advanced that you couldn't simply blow it up, or perhaps have some form of suicide charge so that if you do blow it up there isn't any wreckage :)
Might have to add an evacuate order so a ship can load ground forces from an alien vessel. Wouldn't be in v5.50 but possibility for the future.

I'll brief my marines to start training now then :)

Or perhaps theres the risk that you fully activate the ships technology enabling it to manufacture precurser ships - which could explain why they are spread about the galaxy. These folks have wondering around millions of years at sublight speed building precurser ships and sensor posts on some random automated exploration mission in systems they visit.

Genestealers are not exactly like the xenomorph aliens-- they're even MORE devious than the monsters in the Alien movies.
At least you can count on Alien to eat you and/or lay babies in your face. The genestealer infects you, and then your DNA is polluted-- generations later, your hybrid alien grandkids start telepathically communicating to the hive fleet.
