Title: Transporting Minerals
Post by: zazu on November 13, 2011, 01:25:26 AM
I've been trying to get my Capital fully stocked with minerals but these mass drivers only help a little... I've been trying to set cargo tasks but for some reason they can't pick up minerals? Anyone have a way to make this easier/automate it?

The repeat orders checkbox in your task force orders screen is your friend here. Your cargo ships will likely not be bringing full loads but they should get it done. Let's assume you have 3 mining operations you'd like to gather from, so you create a cargo group and you'd set up orders like so.

Load all minerals site 1
Load all minerals site 2
Load all minerals site 3
Unload all minerals Earth
Refuel from Earth

With the repeat orders checkbox checked then your group will immediately start over with the first order again. Obviously site 1,2 etc get replaced with your actual mining colonies, Luna, Titan, Asteroid 47, or whatever.

The only issue here is if your ships run out of fuel, hence the Refuel order, or if they get too full on their route, in which case they will start canceling orders, if that happens either add more cargo ships to the group, or reduce the route.
Hope that helps.

Cool!

I'll try it out

I got pretty big cargo TG's so I can add a few colonies I hope

--- Hmm, I can only copy paste the order list a gazillion times but should I just click that repeat button 20 times? That should last a long time but I wonder if there's also some button to infinitely do that task list?

Ugh, again the same problem... Cargo bla bla failed to load all minerals from mars

I really don't know what causes it, Mars has plenty of stockpiles left...

---I tried several different colonies but the cargo won't take it!

Maybe post your freighter design.

Ajax class Freighter    34700 tons     246 Crew     486 BP      TCS 694  TH 1050  EM 0
1512 km/s     Armour 1-94     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/0     Damage Control 1     PPV 0
Maintenance Capacity 9 MSP
Cargo 25000   Cargo Handling Multiplier 10

Ion Engine E0.8 (7)    Power 150    Fuel Use 8%    Armour 0    Exp 1%
Fuel Capacity 100

And a bigger version

Condor class Freighter    68950 tons     467 Crew     902 BP      TCS 1379  TH 2100  EM 0
1522 km/s     Armour 1-149     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/0     Damage Control 1     PPV 0
Maintenance Capacity 8 MSP
Cargo 50000   Cargo Handling Multiplier 15

Ion Engine E0.8 (14)    Power 150    Fuel Use 8%    Armour 0    Exp 1%
Fuel Capacity 200

By the way these 2 were made by Aurora at start up

Often this is the result of the freighters allready fully loaded. Check if the cargo holds are empty.

Also make sure that there are actually minerals being left over by the mass drivers.

I checked the cargoholds several times

200000/200000

Also I checked if there were enough minerals being left, and yes there are... stockpiles of 800 while the mass driver sends about 44 every time

I'm really confused about this :(

what the...

ok.  not sure then.  you don't happen to have "multiple colonies" on mars, and you're trying to pick the minerals up from the wrong one?  maybe?   i donno.  Thats weird.

Post screenshots?

It happened with my mining colonies on Titan, Mars and some asteroids.

What kind of screenshots would you like? The one with the error log?

One possible way to avoid these "Cargo failed to load" spam is to first load a small amount of minerals from your main stockpile on Earth, carry that with you, and unload it at the colony in order to make sure that there will be something to load there:

Load Duranium on Earth x100
Unload All Minerals on Venus
Load All Minerals on Venus
Unload All Minerals on Mars
Load All Minerals on Mars
Unload All Minerals on Titan
Load All Minerals on Titan
Unload All Minerals on Earth
(Cycle Orders)

I would imaging that using a "load minerals when X available" order would have the same effect, although it may make the round trips a bit longer, and I'm not sure if there is an equivalent order for all minerals.

Right above the "Repeat Orders X Times" Button there should be a "Cycle Orders" checkbox. Checking that box will make the task group repeat their orders indefinitely.

Ive encountered this same issue.  Attempting to get minerals from Luna and transport to Earth.

Be careful with the cycle order.
There are issues with it on very short runs, like when the order-set is finished inside a single production cycle. Personally I donĀ“t use it, because of the danger of setting up a run and then forgetting it, even long after that run is useful. Therefore I use the repeat X order with 10 or 20 repeats.

I find using cycle orders to be ok with short runs, but I generally slow the ship down to allow for building up minerals at the source and the ship becomes a 50 yr old tramp freighter slowly plying its route. It doesn't have the best or fastest equipment, but gets the job done.

As far as Luna to Earth. If the moon has minerals, plop a mass driver or 2 on it.

If a planet mines duranium and a number of other minerals you can for example give it a Load Duranium when (x) order, and it will wait until duranium reaches that level then execute, then have a Load All Minerals order after it.  Conserves a lot of fuel that way!

You can put multiple mass drivers on the same planet to send more minerals. I have 60 mass drivers sending 300,000 tons of minerals a year on one of mine. Add up all the minerals your colony is producing per year, then send enough mass drivers to chuck them all back (each mass driver contributes 5,000 mineral-flinging capacity). Don't forget to leave at least one on earth though.

Problem loading Mineral could be caused by too short routes.  Mineral extraction has an increment time of 5 Days.  If the freighter ends the Tour within this five days it will show up this error message if cycled.
