Hi, just curious on something recent discussion of missile design has had me thinking about.
When a missile strikes already damaged armour, and falls in a location that partially overlaps a pre existing damage "crater", how is the damage assigned?
For example, a WH 9 missile strikes a section of armour, centered on column 5, O is functional armour, X has been destroyed.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
O O X X X X X O O
O O O X X X O O O
O O O O X O O O O
O O O O O O O O O
O O O O O O O O O
Now say a second WH 9 missile strikes centered on column three, does the damage just fall to the first undamaged row in its respective column, or does it blossom out from the center of the strike?
eg. falling
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
X X X X X X X O O
O X X X X X O O O
O O X X X O O O O
O O X X X O O O O
O O O O O O O O O
eg. blossom
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
O O X X X X X O O
X X X X X X O O O
O X X X X O O O O
O O X O O O O O O
O O O O O O O O O
Mostly just curious as the general mechanics of it

If I recall correctly your second example is correct. The first example is called widowed armor and Steve chose to not use for coding simplicity.

All damage is applied to the column regardless of current damage. So if damage overlaps previous damage just apply it to the correct column. See below for 4 successive hits each doing 4 points of damage. The first is centered on the template, the second is 1 row to the left and the third is two rows to the right. The last is one is on the same column as the first was.

ooooooooo ooooooooo ooooooooo oooxxoooo
There is no cratering under an existing level of armor like you get in the renegade legion games. In the above example if a fifth missile hit on either of the two columns that penetrate then 3 points of damage would get through (2 from the center column, 1 from the adjacent column). The last point would be applied to the highest point of armor remaining on it's column. If instead the fifth missile hit on the 3rd column from the left then only 1 point of damage would penetrate and the other 3 points would be absorbed by the armor.

...
Using Code aligns characters, and there was an error annoying me in the 1st damage template.
v v v v
oooxxxooo ooxxxxooo ooxxxxxxo ooxxxxxxo
ooooxoooo oooxxoooo oooxxxxoo oooxxxxoo
ooooooooo oooxxoooo oooxxoooo oooxxxooo
ooooooooo ooooooooo ooooooooo oooxxoooo
So I guess you could call it falling, yeah.

Cheers guys.
