Title: ...Because Sharing Never Hurted Anyone !
Post by: Geoffroypi on May 04, 2012, 09:36:53 PM
I think every freaks ( ;D) that plays this great game (aurora)
must have very specific tastes in term of games . ;D
The goal of this topic is to share others (eventually) niche games that  aren't , but deserve to be known. (or better known)

Spaceship simulators :
*Pionneer (updated every month :) !) : An elite 2 Remake http://pioneerspacesim.net/

*'Infinity : quest for earth '(must be followed !) : a future supertitanesc space simulation.

*Orbiter : A super realistic space simulation (apolo, shuttle ect ... and near futur)

4x :

*Space empire 5
*Omega-number!?- : A forgotten project similar to aurora. the idea was good but the project ended.
(i know many other 4x but i guess they are already well known)

strategie :
All the europa universalis, hearth of iron (very good) , crusader king 2 (the new (very very good))

others :

Dwarf fortress : LOL , surprised ?

Arma 2 : A very realistic soldier/commander simulation, soooo diferent than the usual crap (Battlefield, CoD ect...) this is the only "FPS" i play.

Myst : Puzzle and enigma.

brytenwalda mod for mount and blade warband

modded medieval total war 2 , Skyrim and civilization 4.

Minecraft : A game with a huge potential

......And .... I can't remember of others for now .
Have Fun !

Gratuitous Space Battles: because sometimes you want to skip straight to epic ship battles filled with deadly picturesque explosions.

Oberin: The only MMORPG I've ever played where the game masters will occasional put together unique massive server-vs-them quests whose out come, at the least, will usually become part of or advance the official game history/lore. Heavy PvE.

Thanks Sublight ,

Oh i forgot one that i've played a lot : 'dangerous water': this is mostly a submarine simulation , but it simulate boat , airplane and helicopter too. I warn you this is super complexe (1000X more complexe than silent hunter) but the battle look so much like in aurora .
This is purely a crazy game you need to manage EVERYTHING in a submarine .

post scriptum about dangerous water :
This part of the tutorial make a good overview of the game itself.
If i insist about this game, its because in some ways it has aurora's spirit :)

The reason Dangerous Waters was so detailed was that Sonalyst is not a gaming house. It is a government contractor whose primary work was and still is US Navy submarine sonar analysis, software, trainers and sonar improvement. Many of the employees are retired and ex US Navy submarine personnel who had a lot of input for this particular piece of software.

Civilization was my favourite one till I found Heart of Iron 2.   Then it becomes my favourite game, at least till i found Aurora.   Now I can’t choose which the best is.   I also play an online browser game based on HoMM series.

I had great fun with Battlefield 2, I wonder how fun is Arma 2 with its realism.

Yes , i've heard of that too :)
I wonder if anyone still makes multiplayer game of Dangerous Water, might be a lot of fun !

Civilization 4 is a great game when you add mods :) , In fact one of the official expansion was just a pack of the greatest fan-mods. Firaxis put a dozen of buttons, added a new menu and a few music and that's it !  ;D

I've played Hearth of iron 3 and enjoyed it, now i'm more focused on Crusader kings 2 : this one is very good, if you liked HoI You will enjoy Crusader kings 2 too.

Arma 2 : Realism isn't a problem. when you begin yes! because you won't understand why you have been killed by a guy 500 meter away, by one bullet, without hearing or seeing anything. You won't understand why you have walked 7 km in a forest and why this isn't the good place you were looking for ^^Why you don't have a shiny marker or a 10 meter wide map that lead to your objectif , why the "bad guy" aren't marked in red and why the "good guy" aren't green ect ... ;D ^^ But arma 2 is one of my favorite game and without any doubt the best FPS/war simulator ever made, and the fun begin when we understand this isn't quake 3 gameplay. ;)
*****
Tales of Maj'Eyal 4 (or T-engine) : Tome 4 is a big Rpg developed on a engine that lets everyone make their own rpg if they want to, in the fashion of Rpg-maker.

Wow Hearth of iron 3 on beta ! ;D

I remember while playing an early version of Hoi3 I had invaded all italia as switzerland with only 1 regiment and without having a single fight because itilia didnt care about moving theirs troops from the french frontline. After a few month the same unstopable and heroic regiment was planning to invade all europe ! At the same time UK landed some troop north of berlin and had just conquered a territory twice the england size. So i stopped this stupid game and waited for patchs and now this is real fun. (and switzerland is more "Balanced"  ;D )

Hearts of Iron II (I was a beta)  8)

Nah, 3 is better than 2 in pretty much all ways so I strictly play it nowadays. Well, used to until my laptop blew up. No gaming for me now :(

I liked to play hearts of iron 3 as like, brazil- but the game would always fall apart as ww2 got going.  I didn't care about realism issues, but performance was so bad I shelved it.

Have the patches and expansions made it sufficiently playable?

I'd also like to know the answer to this.  The comments on this forum when HoI III was released put me off buying it.

Yes. The most recent expansion "For the Motherland" (which requires both HOI-3 and Semper Fi to play) has added multi-core support to the game, as well as a host of other improvements. It now runs far faster than before.

I play dwarf fortress, stone soup, crusader kings (1-2), europa universalis 3, victoria (1-2), hearts of iron (2, aod and 3), Eve online and kerbal space program.
Hearts of Iron 3, is something I'm still in the learning phase though as I can't really wrap my head around  the province amount.
Also emu I didn't know you played dwarf fortress, you're now even cooler to me.

I have downloaded Dwarven Fortress... looked at it for about 15 minutes and shrugged and exited it.  TOOOO steep of a learning curve.  I'm sure I'll get back to it someday.

As to HoI3, I can not get it to run on my computer.  I bought it 2 different times, once from Impulse and once from Steam.  I have installed and un-installed a few times and each time I start the game, I get a stop watch icon, then a black screen, then a hoi3.exe has stopped working.

Very frustrating as I LOVE HoI2: Iron Cross and really want to try HoI3 with Motherland expansion.

Rename music folder in HoI3 folder to something else, like music2.

If that works, there is a problem with your audio codecs. Getting up-to-date FFDSHOW or Matroska codecpack should fix it but in some cases that won't help. You could always just play without music or use Media Player Classic to play the music separately from the game.

I own HoI3 and all the xpacs (thanks to Steam Sales) but never gave it any serious time (same with EU3), I first played Arsenal of Destruction (which was a HoI2 fan made xpac thing), which I loved.

Has anyone here tried Global Conflict Blue (http://www.gcblue.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page)? Its a free Harpoon-a-like which I stumbled across when i tried to install Harpoon on my win7 system recently (it just wont install on a non 32bit system) - and was googling for help. The reason I was trying to install Harpoon again was after playing Naval War: Arctic Circle, which is pretty good, just a touch.. lightweight?

And here you are on the Aurora forums, a forum on a game which I would say is equal to Dwarf Fortress... :P

I recently preorded Endless Space, with that you get to play their Alpha of the game. Which i must say is alot better then some game releases i have played. It is a pretty good game if you are looking for a MoO type game.

I also pre-ordered Endless Space 3 or 4 days ago. It's been quite enjoyable so far as an empire-building game, although with its cinematic/largely uncontrollable/small-scale fleet battles I doubt it will hold my attention the way MoO2 did. I still feel it's quite a good deal though for the 20 dollars it costs.

Yeah, I was very, very happy with Endless Space. Very much worth the money, and it's only in Alpha!

Well, the main screen in DF is so cluttered by symbols that it was a little intimidating.  At least Aurora has an interface that makes sense. :)

Yes i think it has intimided everyone at the first time^^ . The first hours of Dwarf Fortress are very hard, but in fact you will quickly get used to the "interface" of DF after 2-3 little games.
* I Seriously advice you to download The "lazy nebie pack" , It include alot of indispensable tools for your fortress managment and many graphic packs including an .....  isometric renderer for a DF in 2d/3d :http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2654/4071655207_868ca417cc_o.png (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2654/4071655207_868ca417cc_o.png) (look better! :) )
, and many other useful things. Its regurarly updated and very easy to use . This pack is a 'must' ; i never play DF without it !

By the way ... Does anyone Knows a realistic cRPG text game set in medieval europe with real 'HISTORICAL MEDIEVAL'? (and not the pseudo-medieval we see in any common rpg). I searched and i never seen any of this kind of games, except Darklands .
I coudn't find any darklands remake/inspirated game , so i've just started (since 1 week  ;D)to program in c++ an illustrated text-based 'rpg' set in a realistic Europe of the 12th century ; a project i had in mind for a long time.

You might want to register at RPGCodex and browse their Workshop. Many discussions about RPG mechanics there and some indie RPG projects are underway as well:
http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?forums/codex-workshop.37/ (http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?forums/codex-workshop.37/)

Just be warned, the language used there is often very... colorful.

Sorry to take so long to respond.  I have been playing Diablo III a lot.  Tried the "music" subdirectory trick and it actually tried to work.  I usually got a black screen, then a watch icon/pointer, then crash... all in about 2 - 3 seconds.

This time, I got a black screen, watch icon/pointer, black screen, watch icon/pointer then crash, but it took about 5-6 seconds to transpire.  So, maybe I was double screwed and the music folder was just the first issue that your suggestion fixed.

Again, I appreciate your input and sorry for the delay in responding.

I spend almost all of my limited gaming time playing the masterpiece that is "War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition".   8)

The WitP:AE forum at Matrixgames is where I spend (waste) most of my online time.    ;D
