Title: Military-Maritime Starfleet of the Russian Federation
Post by: Marski on June 27, 2012, 04:13:45 PM
Keep in mind that these ships are geared towards countering size 1 missile spam and over 10K ships which one certain race currently fields.

These ships are intendet to be kept at maximum range along with the command ship, cover each other against missiles.

One question I have is why do all three designs have jump drives? Assuming there are no other accompanying vessels, that's a lot of tonnage wasted.

for AMM work and the sizes involved, both magazine size and number of launchers is surprisingly small in all cases. I would also cut the number of missile fire control systems to 1 per 2 or 3 launchers, unless you want a dedicated fire control system for each launcher for RP purposes.

Also agreed that the escorts don't really need their own jumpdrives unless you like having that for RP purposes.

What size will the command ship end up at? If it's already 36k tons, I can imagine it'll be around 50,000 tons with jump drives and hanger space for the corvettes.

Because if the jump ship carrying them would be destroyed, the ships would be stranded in a hostile territory.

There are control system for each pd launchers because the current pd missile designs hit their target most of the time, one pd missile per enemy missile. I want as many of them shot down before they reach my ships.

The command ship won't be getting hangar spaces, I am not going for a design like that. Just corvettes flying alongside it. (the corvettes will be probably 6000 tons or 9000 tons)

Because if the jump shi(p) carrying them would be destroyed, the ships would be stranded in a hostile territory.

Wouldn't one jump-capable ship per three non-jump ships still afford you lots of redundancy plus lots of extra tonnage?

But you don't SHOOT at incoming missiles... you shoot at incoming SALVOS. You only need one FC per incoming enemy salvo, not one per missile.

The Sverdlov lacks a long-ranged firecontroll.

THe PD turrets have a tracking speed of 60,000 while the corresponding firecontroll only has 32,000. The "extra" bit is wasted and uses up tonnage (unless you want to upgrade later)

The Maintenance Lifetime is very very large. Do you seriously expect to stay away for decades?

The firecontroll will be upgraded later, researched the gauss technologies (well, for the velocity atleast, ROF just seems to go on and on) to the max. I currently have beam firecontroll range being researched, so yes, FC will be upgraded later on. That turret will be around for a while (untill I get decent laser technology to make point-defence out of them that is)

Now that I think about it; probably not. I was thinking of upgrading to Carrier and Missile-focused battlecruisers doctrine (inspired by the irl soviet and russian navy). I am not sure what you consider huge or small tonnage for what class, but in my mind over 30K tons is something of a norm for a frigate by 2100 atleast. Lots of space to put lots of things into.

I also forgot to mention that these designs are a bit...unfinished. I am currently doing massive upgrades to most weapon techs and missiles due to recent breakthroughts in technologies.

Fair enough on the command ship. My confusion came from your statement that it would 'carry a handful of corvettes', which to me indicates hanger space is needed.

I am not sure what's wrong with the Missile Frigate, but it's PD-missile launcher FC unit is unable to detect or target incoming missiles. This was noticed in the battle of Luyten Palomar 914-54. Enemy fleet consisting of 8 ships of various types were obliterated, and our fleet consisting of 3 missile frigates suffered only crew losses, but overall their armour took most of the damage.

Might be a silly question, but do you have an active sensor with the appropriate size 1 resolution turned on?

I thought I saw you folks say that its useless save for RP purposes somewhere around here

I don't remember seeing anyone say that, you need a res 1 active sensor to see missiles, this has never been an RP only thing.

Your fighters are way too heavy; a good rule of thumb is to have your fighters be 300 tons or less. At 300 tons a fighter will be equal in speed to a 1000 ton FAC assuming the same engines techs.

Also you've got very short range on those designs. With a 250mkm combat radius, you could actually get better standoff firepower out of two-stage drone missiles.

Next, you've got mixed weapon systems (two different sizes of missiles), this is generally more of a pain than it's worth on a fighter.

You've also got sensors on each fighter, these take up a lot of room. You can save a lot of space by designing a sensor variant fighter and putting one in each of your squadrons to provide coverage.

The Gauss fighter really needs to lose its missiles. If you want to use beam fighters they need every ounce of speed you can squeeze out of them to keep them alive.

The carrier has a couple small issues as well. Fighters don't often require much since their clocks don't go up while they're in the hangar and any damage they sustain on a mission will typically kill them outright, so you could probably dump the vast majority of that 19 years worth of maintenance. On the other side of the coin, you've got a very small amount of magazine space and fuel relative to your hangar deck size. Unless you've got a tanker and ordinance supply ship coming with your fleet you'll most likely want to increase both of those.

The reason why the Escort Carrier is like that is because at this point designing a Jump Drive above 20K takes months, or even a year to develope. Lots of stuff are there just to make some use of the tonnage.

But anyway, changed the stuff in the fighters.

First thing coming to mind for me - Slightly too large for fighters.

Since they are above 500 tons, they are technically FAC's and therefore needs to be built in your shipyards.  You'd have to reduce their size a bit for them to be able to build them in the Fighter Factories,

recon fighter will slow down the interceptors. dump the thermal, and maybe the ecm.  If you can, increase the range of the sensor system.

You can still squeeze some weight out of these fighters.  judging by the MSP you are using something larger than a single Fighter Engineering SPace - unnecssary.  The long range on these fighters is much better, but perhaps unnecessary to have on every variant; that pretty much comes down to doctrine.

I do note that the tracking speed on the starfighter tracking system is very low, possibly indicating very low tracking speed tech.  Given that you have fusion drives, it would be pretty easy to upgrade your beam fire control tech so you get at least 16k km/s tracking.  If you want, you could also save some weight by reducing the range a little.

I'd really like to know what you are putting on these things that takes 200+ msp to repair though... O_o  It might be whats driving up the cost so high... Ion drive fighters (my usual fare) run about 40-70 bp.

Speaking of doctrine, you should really visualize and figure out what exactly you want each of these ships to do and how that will fit into your doctrine. Then rework them with that doctrine in mind.  If these were my ships, I'd do it this way.. The Interceptors are long range strike craft, ideally striking from outside the range of enemy sensors; they could sacrifice some speed for firepower and fuel if need be.    The MiG-49s look like close range task force defence boats, for shooting missiles and fighters; I would set them up with minimum weight (no fuel, engineering, etc), maximum speed (for better tracking) and sophisticated targeting systems.  And the SU-150MI .. is a Joint strike fighter kludge. Heh!  I am a bit worried about that one. It is super expensive and looks like it mounts more tonnage of electronics than anything else. A Res1 100km range FC is expensive on a chassis that size, and you also have a beam FC on there.  In one of my campaigns I do have a beam/missile fighter, but its designed to only need to be slightly faster than starships in close-range strike scenarios. It uses a completely minimum-size missile FC. To be fair, thats less workable on anti-fighter duty, but here's the thing about anti-fighter duty...   its much harder to see fighters coming than to shoot at them generally. What is going to spot the enemy fighters for the Su-150MI to go to work? Certainly its not going to be the carrier or the recon fighter.

The high costs come mainly from the engine (50 cost), they are Internal confinement Fusion drives with fuel efficiency cramped up to -100% for the extra kick, and the thermal reduction pulled down to 8% for cover against sensors and missiles.
Also the purpose of these designs are largely to try to stay as far away from the enemy ships as possible while still being able to strike at them.

The beam fire control tracking is way to low currently.  If your base tracking speed is 5000km/s or better then you need to change it.  Otherwise you really need to drop the whole idea.  Currently the tracking speed is 12000km/s.  This is the limiter on the system.  There is a dedicated fighter beam fire control option.  Look at the bottom of the tech design screen and there are a couple of pulldown options.  On of these limits the design to only fighters.  The benifit is you get the equivilent of x4 tracking speed without the mass penalty.

How does TS: 32000 km/s fancy you?
