Does anyone know where this flag is from or whether it's just a random symbol? I was trying to find a solid color version to recolor for NationStates, and wasn't sure what it was from.

It's the flag of Oita Prefecture in Japan. For some reason, I think the flags of the different Japanese prefectures are great for sci-fi.

I agree.  Very unique colors and shapes that are unlike most national flags.
