Title: Starting a custom game
Post by: strych90 on November 30, 2012, 12:40:53 PM
I've done a couple of searches on this a while ago, but wasn't able to discern any real information on how to go about doing this.

I wan't to start a game without auto-generating Sol, and set up my own home system. Can someone explain how to go about actually making/attaining/generating/whatevering a system? Is it random? Can I manually edit something to design a system (planets, orbits, etc). I know how to use SM to add a race, and edit attributes of planets and all that.

Thanks

The best you can do is generate systems until you find one you like. When you click New game, in the third column at the top I believe is an option to generate Sol. Uncheck that.

I've been doing this a lot so I'll help you out. When you click new game, there should be an option on that big screen called "Sol Start" or  "SM Race start - Advanced players only". Click the SM Race start. Some of the other options, specifically those relating to your race, become irrelevant but some don't. Just set everything up the way you want it to be safe.

Now when the game is generated, you will start without a system or a race. Before you can do anything, you will have to select your default race in the 'Game' menu. Set it to your only option, SM Race. Also set spacemaster on. Next, press F9 to go to the system screen. One of the buttons near the bottom right should be 'Create System'. Click it. A new system should be generated. This should get you started, just remember to delete all the unused systems you generated.

Eventually, when you have the perfect planet for your race, press the 'Create Empire' button. You then get to put in all your race options again. Have fun!

You don't need to delete the extra systems you generate. They will be used if that system number is called up.

Ah thanks, both of you. I tried these steps once, in 5.XX and I was getting errors, so I thought I was doing something wrong. I think I may have messed up that install because I was getting an inordinate number of errors in just about everything.
Thanks again for your help

No, the process is a bit buggy. Or at least it was, seems more stable now.

Yeah I've got it going and I'm about 15 or so years into the game. Thanks for your help, guys
